Some Trimming Hints

Most of you are experienced trimmers and won’t benefit from this (I don’t think). However, there may be some folks here who either are not so experienced, or are daunted by the task of trimming. There are others who simply have no confidence in their skills. Maybe some newish growers. For these folks, for what it’s worth, I put together a couple hints that I’ve learned (or was taught) about trimming that help me, and may help you.

- Before you begin, prep. Have a large, clean space to work on, like a long table. Assemble your trimming scissors. If you like, get a small cup of alcohol to soak the scissors in as they get too gummed up and you have to switch (and after you collect the scissor hash, lol). I always make sure I start with clean scissors, and as sharp as I have. I clean any pair that has been switched out then back in. A copper scrubbing pad (fine one, like ChoreBoy) is what I use, but that fine, woolen steel wool works well too. Clean. Get yourself a large cup of coffee (or beverage of choice). Put some music on if you like (I do). If you want to use gloves, get them too (I do for sticky bud). Basically the simple idea is, you’re going to be sitting in the same spot and chair doing boring, repetitive work for several hours. Make yourself comfortable. Make your area complete so you don’t have to keep getting up and down (efficiency). Be prepared for things like your back to start hurting or maybe your fingers getting numb. If everything is there before you start you will feel much better about the whole process. And obviously assemble any drugs you may need. Heh.
- Take breaks! Stand up. Stretch. Take a walk. You’ll want to anyway.
- Switch your scissors as soon as you lose your sharp. This is very important!!!! How many of us can relate to our damn trimmers being too dull and starting to grab and pull at what you’re trying to cut? Then you start messing buds up. Sharp is key.
- I find it very helpful for finer work (like trimming real small leaves) to choke up on my scissors. Yes, you can choke up on scissors the same way you choke up on a baseball bat. And why did all your coaches in little league try to teach you to choke up? Because you have more control! Obvious maybe, but I didn’t realize this for several grows.
- For the initial trim (the one before you hang or whatever, when you take all the fans and such), I find it quicker to use longer trimming scissors. There’s lots of chances on the first trim to nail several fans at once if you have longer trimmers.
- I save my trim (the sugar trim, the good stuff) when I do the final trim. That’s the best trim for kief, or extracts, or whatever you do. I think of the plant like a good and responsible hunter thinks of anything they kill - use the whole animal as much as possible. Plus, I love kief. The lesser, non-kief-worthy trim makes butter or edibles and gets saved in bags. Only the stems and fans get wasted in my operation, but there are people here who even use the stems. Think about what if anything you wish to save ahead of time and have the boxes or whatever you use to collect it.
- A pair of fine fingernail scissors works well for SUPER fine work (like if you were going for a show trim or for a picture or something).
- If you sell or distribute your weed somehow, everyone will like you better the less stem you give them. :rofl: I go for my bags being as close to 100% smokeable material as I can possibly create.
- If you have a ton of weed, get yourself some help. It’s super easy to do if you don’t have people. Would you help someone trim for an evening for a half ounce of weed? Lol.
- Lastly - STOP THINKING YOU SUCK. You don’t. And as you go you’ll get better and better and faster and faster. It’s impossible not to. So give yourself a break, be patient, be comfortable, be high, and trim your little asses off!!

When it’s time to trim it’s time to trim. I’ll sleep when I’m dead.
I know you just kidding us. But, taking a good rest is important for your body and so you have the energy to do something that you want to do.
 
Hey @Azimuth - there are two things I can say at this point about the bud wash.

— you can visibly see that the buds have been cleaned when held up next to one that wasn’t. I tried to capture it in pictures and it’s impossible. Too subtle to the camera but not to the eye.
— the washed bud, even cured only about 10 days, has a noticeably brighter taste than the others. Again, it’s subtle but noticeable.

Both of these are insanely positive things.

Here’s the trimmed stuff and the littles. Many of those littles will make the jars. This pheno I’ve never gotten before on the WWC. It has cheese for days! Like a serious initial hit of that oh so awesome sweet cheese smell! It’s unmistakable. Every one I’ve grown before this one has been identical. This one looked the same but smells entirely different.

93 + 68 = 161 grams = 5.75 ounces. 5.669 ounces (FTFM, lol @Absorber!)

So up to now:
5.4 + 5.4 + 5.4 + 5.0 + 5.75 = 26.95 ounces, with the Dos Si Dos drying and the Pink Rozay and Apple Fritter yet to harvest. I was hoping to get between 40 and 50 ounces jarred, and I’m certain that the three we have left will get me there. Another 21 ounces gets me to 50. I think those three add up to that. We will see.
