Jon's Outdoor Winter Photoperiod Grow

Hey what’s up with the new stickers? I didn’t get them. CL🍀
You start getting them as soon as your signature has more than one title….

You know I’m just ribbing you @CaptainLucky, hell, I don’t have that one! Funny story about that - I was nominated once, and I held my own vote until like midnight of the last day, when the voting closed at like 3 am or something. If I was tied I was maybe going to vote for myself. But I had a two vote lead. It was fricking midnight. So I voted for someone else, but not the person two votes behind me. I thought I had it in the bag. Well. Don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched, as they say. They say that for a reason. Lmao. I woke up to a damn tie, and lost about an hour later. All I had to do was vote for myself!

True story.

Yeah but even though you didn’t win you took the high road and in my opinion that makes you a winner 🏆 . CL🍀👍

Lol. I sort of took the high road. If I were tied I honestly can’t tell you what I’d have done.

Here’s a fun question….

I’m consider taking the 420h and putting it vertically on one wall of the 5x5 and running it at whatever ppfd level ends up working in conjunction with the overhead light. Just to see what happens with a plant like this with side lighting. If I did it I’d rotate the plant daily to even out exposure to the extra light side. Never did side lighting in any form really. Curious.

Thoughts??

Can't see any harm as long as you don't go from 0-100 all at once on that poor undercarriage!
Thank you @InTheShed!! First to respond on the forum. I appreciate it greatly. So it sounds as if you and I agree pretty much…

ASSUMING I can balance the ppfd’s and not burn the plant, and ASSUMING I keep up on the rotation (180 degrees should do it each morning I would think, I practically do that anyway so as to water evenly from one side of the tent…), I think there are only two possible outcomes:
1. Absolutely nothing.
2. Something greater than if I didn’t add the lights, however much that is.

Ie - It can’t hurt and it *might* help.

I think if one were to try this as I am, early flower like nowish would be about when to kick it in, as now what’s on her is there by design exclusively.

I know, wishful thinking. I’m going to try it beginning tomorrow morning.

Thanks!

You could use a microwave aftermarket carousel to keep the light at a constant rate. Maybe a little Stoner ingenuity?lolCL🍀

I appreciate that guys, @InTheShed and @CaptainLucky, but I’m going to keep it simple (and free!) for the experiment. I just scoped it out and it’s a piece of cake. All it takes is one solid surface (I have dozens) and the existing infrastructure of the oh so worth the extra coin Gorilla tent. I got this. However, I did put the idea into the longer term bank in case it actually does anything, so thanks!

Since I among the cheesiest you’ll find here, a badge of honor I wear proudly, please allow me to tease our next fairly significant experiment, which will begin tomorrow morning.

It involves light. Lots of it.

Maybe you have a X-mas tree carousel already you could use? CL🍀 :goodluck: :Namaste:

Great idea! They have a usb powered one for sale at Amazon with a 44lb load for under $40.

If you don't want to disassemble a microwave I mean. :)
I wasn’t talking about disassembling a microwave but I’m sure you know a link. Lmao 😂 CL🍀

Tell you what CL - you do it, then show me a step by step pictorial on how you did. Then I can just follow your model and of course improve on it.

Flower Day 27
A New Experiment Takes Off!!

I swear half the stupid stuff I do is just to keep you guys interested.

So say hello to some rather serious side lighting. This is the NextLight 420h. As you see it here it is set to 25% power.

Dialing it in, ie, balancing the heat, RH, and ppfd, was the tricky part. The setup was cake.

Here’s what was necessary to dial it in.

1. Move the plant to floor level so it’s right at the level the AC comes into the tent.
2. Lowered the beast light until it sits 14” above the plant. Before it was at 8”. This was to make room for the extra ppfd from the side light. The beast is set to 100% with the reds/FR/IR engaged at 680 watts.
3. Used the Phototone app to ensure no part of the plant was getting hit with too much ppfd. The tops are at about 1200. The now lit up side is now at about 1000 top to bottom. In contrast, the lower buds on the “dark side” are getting around 550. I will rotate the plant 180 degree each morning.
4. Eliminated entirely the dehumidifier. Left it in but it’s turned off for now. The AC unit maintains the RH effectively with just the one plant in there. Dehumidifier was unnecessary and turning it off lowered the heat noticeably.
5. Messed around with fans, plant location, adding one layer of bricks at the bottom to raise the plant two inches, and messed around a little with the position of the 420h.

After all that everything is sweet as hell. Plenty of ppfd, a fully lit up lower plant on one side, manageable and not terribly different environment than before, and I doubt I’ll have to raise the level on the 420h.

Will it increase the size, yield and density of the lower buds? They’re certainly getting almost twice as much light now, albeit one side at a time. This is obviously the point of the experiment.

We’re going to find out.

Hey @Jon, I'm interested ;). And I'm curious how the experiment will turn out. Good luck.

I would think it'd work great as it would get direct light to the undercarriage to help increase the size of those buds, one of the main reasons growers like to do a defol after stretch.

Might make those lower buds grow out towards the light and mis-shapen them cause you're screwing with Mother Nature and how she likes to do things, but I think most of us would encourage you to do that. That way we can see what she does without incurring her wrath directly. :cheesygrinsmiley:
