Flower Day 27
A New Experiment Takes Off!!
I swear half the stupid stuff I do is just to keep you guys interested.
So say hello to some rather serious side lighting. This is the NextLight 420h. As you see it here it is set to 25% power.
Dialing it in, ie, balancing the heat, RH, and ppfd, was the tricky part. The setup was cake.
Here’s what was necessary to dial it in.
1. Move the plant to floor level so it’s right at the level the AC comes into the tent.
2. Lowered the beast light until it sits 14” above the plant. Before it was at 8”. This was to make room for the extra ppfd from the side light. The beast is set to 100% with the reds/FR/IR engaged at 680 watts.
3. Used the Phototone app to ensure no part of the plant was getting hit with too much ppfd. The tops are at about 1200. The now lit up side is now at about 1000 top to bottom. In contrast, the lower buds on the “dark side” are getting around 550. I will rotate the plant 180 degree each morning.
4. Eliminated entirely the dehumidifier. Left it in but it’s turned off for now. The AC unit maintains the RH effectively with just the one plant in there. Dehumidifier was unnecessary and turning it off lowered the heat noticeably.
5. Messed around with fans, plant location, adding one layer of bricks at the bottom to raise the plant two inches, and messed around a little with the position of the 420h.
After all that everything is sweet as hell. Plenty of ppfd, a fully lit up lower plant on one side, manageable and not terribly different environment than before, and I doubt I’ll have to raise the level on the 420h.
Will it increase the size, yield and density of the lower buds? They’re certainly getting almost twice as much light now, albeit one side at a time. This is obviously the point of the experiment.
We’re going to find out.
Here’s the story in pictures:
