Jon's New Pared Down Setup Soil Grow: 3 Photo & 1 Auto With New Dedicated Auto Rig

I would wait a couple more days
Thanks. Too many white hairs shooting from calyx's, right? That's what I think. Could be tighter too and probably will develop more orange hairs. You agree?

Hey @Tokin Roll, @Rexer, @Virgin Ground, @Backlipslide, @Modest Grower, @Emilya, @Nine Toed Hippie, @Furcifer, @Bill284, @Michael Hunt, @Hash Girl, @oldmanjj, @Grand Daddy Black, @Thirvnrob and anyone else I forgot, if you guys have a minute or two to help me make a decision I would greatly appreciate your input.

Here's three pictures of the Sour Apple. Day 78.

Do I take her when it's lights out tonight?

Or do I wait a couple more days?

What would you guys do?
You can reference yesterday's post if you wanna see trichomes but I was wondering what y'all think based solely on looking at the buds. Keep in mind I prefer a sativa high to a body indica high and prefer a stronger sativa balance by far in a hybrid, and also that my tolerance is as high as all you criminal's is.

Thanks guys!!!!!

I see lots of white pistils . Based on that, I’d overthink it for a day or two, but I’m working backwards through the post…
I’ve had Sativa dominant plants churn out white pistils with everything else screaming that it’s time to chop. I think you’re at a “judgment call “ juncture - time to fly solo. You’ve absolutely nailed everything else about this grow…

Sour Apple Harvest/Trichome Watch
Day 76

I was right not to take her the other day. She is still fattening up. I was able to get much better trich pictures today without the triple espresso and a steadier hand on the microscope. Heh. Sativa and espresso first thing in the morning can sometimes make me just a tad jumpy. Anyway, what I see in the trichome pictures today versus two days ago is WAY more fully white, filled up trichomes, and far fewer clear ones. Nice. And god, this entire plant is just blanketed in them. It's by far the most trichome covered plant I have ever grown, auto or photo. And having grown this strain before, I have to go back to the Sohum. It's the only significant difference between this Sour Apple and the others I have grown which were not nearly as frosty. In the sun in the morning this plant looks positively silver-green. It's pretty badass I must say.

So now I feel like I can take her any time I want. Her THC is probably maxed right now, and there's a big part of me, the less mature Jon part, that says take her, take her. But the older, slightly more mature Jon says if you take her now you'll miss out on the body part of the buzz and it'll be almost all head high. Wait a couple more days for some more amber to come in. So that's who I'm going to listen to and what I will do. Lol. This will also give the white and orange hairs that are still a bit unruly to work down into the bud and tighten them all up. I'm thinking two or three days. I may let her go four more just to get to 80 days on this strain for the first time. My OCD side likes 80. It's a round number. :laughtwo:

By the way, I haven't mentioned it much, but this plant smells so damn strong I'm glad it's outside now. The odor is sweet and fruity, much more candy-like and pungent than past versions of this strain, which I assume comes from the Magic Melon parent, but it also has the dank odor from the Humboldt Sour Diesel parent. I think maybe this is a pretty good representation of what Humboldt intended this strain to be. I can't WAIT to smoke this girl. And, this plant is the first time where my end product looks pretty much exactly like the pictures in HSC's own advertising. Pretty cool.

So here's the decent, all trichome porn today. One cool thing you can see in these that I noticed is that even the smallest, thinnest orange hairs are all covered in trichomes too. You can see it really well in the third picture on the thin shoot going off to the right side of the photo. I dig that.

Enjoy!

For all things there is a season. She’s close…

As I stated earlier, I was working backwards through your journal. I’m happy for you winning GJOTM. You definitely deserve it. Congratulations!
Thanks man! Appreciate the props. So you agree with Emilya? Leave her? Cuz that's what I decided to do. Thanks for stopping by. There are so many journals to keep up with between growing your plants and writing your own journal and taking the pictures and oh don't forget we all have actual lives as well with families and responsibilities and such, and somewhere in there I suppose we have to actually work as well....I can't believe anyone is able to keep up with anyone else's journals. Lol. The moderators must do nothing but read all day long.

I guess that's enough.....

One thing I have noticed on how autos finish, and this seems to be consistent across every strain I have grown, is that they sort of seem like they are never quite "finished." The vertical growth with autos never totally stops, even post stretch. They continue to get taller til you cut them, albeit slowly. The buds, more so in the sativas and sativa heavy hybrids, seem as if once they get close, like this Sour Apple is, they will continue to shoot out those pistils forever til you chop her, and continue to get bigger. If you wanted gigantic buds and didn't care that they'd basically be CBD weed cuz you'd have 100% amber, you could let an auto go 120 days and the buds would be ridiculous and hardly get you high. At least that's my theory based on observation and growing maybe 16 autos in 7 or 8 different strains. Thoughts?

Phototown Stretch/Flower Update
October 2
Final Step of Training Demo - Defoliation
Grow Day 78
Stretch/Flower Day 8

Sometimes the plants dictate your schedule more so than you do, despite what you may *think* you're going to do. Such is the case here. I did not expect to be posting this post today. However, I did the morning check on the girls and it seems the plants, especially the Ghost Train Haze and the Hulkberry, have decided it's time to start settling into their final spots. I can see a distinct difference in how the bud sites look this morning versus yesterday - a bit yellower, a bit more looking like the buds are about to show themselves. You can see from the bud sites that in a day or two, at least on those two plants, we are going to start to see cotton balls. The Slurricane appears to be a few days behind the other two to my eyes.

That means, for this method, it's a good time to do the final step of the training, which is simply the final defoliation step to expose bud sites now that you can look at the plants and get a pretty good idea of what you're dealing with in terms of buds. Once I do this, it's hands off the plants for weeks, with the exception of keeping the canopy even through what should be, at this point, the occasional pull down and not a whole lot more. The plants have graced me with a brilliantly even stretch, which is shockingly awesome but unexpected as hell.

The other reason for this final defol step is to keep air flow through the plant and not let a ton of underneath leaves get so bunched up and smashed together that you start to get mold. This is especially important if you are running an AC unit into your tent. Or two, as I am....lol. I have had that happen and it's obviously not what you want, so I take some underneath leaves specifically that are blocking air flow, in addition to leaves from the top to open the bud sites to direct light. You will see a significant difference in the plants in the pictures today. It's almost as if you can now see what's about to happen for the first time.

And this, finally, is how we go to war. Phew, that was a crapload of training and work. Although it would be nice if everyone in the world could take a pill and be paralyzed for one day just to experience/understand the reality of it, until then please take my word for it - unless you NEED to be able to rotate the plants to work them as I do, I honestly can't see a ton of reasons to train like this when you can do the exact same thing with a scrog. That said, it's kind of like creating a bonsai tree out of a pot plant, and that is really fun and teaches you a TON about training a plant. I got these as sweet as they are after realizing this methodology on the last grow with Sadie, my Jelly Rancher. From that I learned and honed the method to create what you're seeing here. You learn how to train really quickly when it's necessary to do it every day. There is another huge advantage, which is that the plant's vertical height overall will finish at probably less than 3'!!! If you have space issues and are not confident in your scrogging skills, this is perhaps a nice alternative if you have time. Lots and lots of time....lol.

Now JonBoy gets a break. Training done, autos just have to finish, and the entire new outdoor grow is organic and couldn't be set up to be easier. YAY.

Thanks you guys for putting up with the tedious numerous posts that I thought were necessary to do a real demo and display a methodology thoroughly. I am well aware of the "over posting," and I'm kind of glad it won't be necessary anymore. I'll now bring it back to a human level. Appreciate your latitude as nobody ragged on me about it. Lmao. I hope it had value to someone, and really it would be awesome if another wheelchair grower ever sees this and says "hey, this would work great for me!"

About a month or two ago I pointed out your grow journal to one of my patients/clients who lost both legs and an arm in Iraq. Jack does not like typing but he is reading your stuff and from a previous conversation I know that he is greatly inspired by what you are doing. I can say with certainty that you are being followed by at least one person in your target audience, and most likely, many more. WWG1WGA

I am of no help to you here... I have never grown an auto to completion.

While I don't understand the alpha code you close with, I appreciate this very much, thanks.

Hey Jon hope your having a good day.
There is a lot of white pistols there still.
Which means she is still flowering to me.
I'd give her time to let them turn red and crinkle first.
IMO she is still building her buds.
Stay safe Amigo.

I have a very close friend that served multiple tours in multiple places. He didn’t receive any physical injuries but tons of mental damage. He suffered through it for quite some time until he started reaching out and started to heal himself by helping others like him. He is still in a very high stress job but he copes and maintains. Alcohol and other government issued meds keep him “straight”. One night I was over having some drinks with him and I offered him a puff of some pretty good smoke. Since he had just taken a piss test he accepted. You could literally see the pain and tension flowing out of his face and literally his whole body to be honest. He was amazed and now he is patiently counting down the days to retirement so he can further explore what this great plant can do for him. Please thank your patient for his service for me and thank you for helping him out. It’s a beautiful thing. Peace.

Yes, they will continue to produce the white pistils when ripe (sometimes). It’s down to the microscope now…
