Foxtailing with Titan and Jon's 2 cents
Okay, we are officially way into foxtailing territory. Well, not WAY. Ask
@Krissi1982 about WAY into foxtail territory. I'm only a bit into it. Here's how it is as I understand it:
Foxtailing is caused by one of two things: stress or genetics. Genetically some strains simply grow in a foxtail fashion. Many a landrace sativa grows this way, some are pure foxtails 100%. Even some indicas, where you get real fat buds covered with mini-foxtails growing out. It's very strain specific. So genetics is one thing.
Stress is another. My understanding, which mirrors my personal experience, is that two things will promote foxtailing more so than others, ie, too much light and too much heat. Which is exactly what I have had going on with TItan. Too much light for sure, too much heat for four to six hours a day due to the outdoor conditions. As a result, the plant is stressed, and it begins to grow foxtails. This occurs from the top down, in that the closer to the light, the more the light intensity and the more heat. So the upper buds show more than the lower ones, and at the bottom there are none. An exception in my case is that the two giant colas seem less affected by it than the smaller (lol) buds, but even they are showing it a little.
Foxtails ain't going to hurt anyone. You can let them go if you like. Some folks even try to control them to try and increase their bud mass and yields. I no likey. It's an esthetic thing. So, the solution couldn't be simpler. Back off the light and back off the heat, however you accomplish that. I have done so on Titan, I cut the light from 100% to 50%, and that cut the heat, along with some strategic fan positioning, down almost 8 degrees, so the hottest it gets up top now is 82 degrees and mostly it's around 76-ish. This should stop the foxtailing in it's tracks and we should see no more of it, and depending on how much fattening and time is left, they'll either fill all the way in around the existing foxtails or they won't. In my case I have now arrested it perhaps two or three days too late to get them all the way filled in on the ones that are "bad." Again, not bad, just looks weird. However, along with foxtailing can come things like bud bleaching, pistil burning, and leaf curling, at a minimum. I had the leaf curl and was okay with it. No signs of bleaching or browning pistils, which often precede the foxtails in my experience, but not in Titan's case. Which is why I initially thought the beginning of it was a growth spurt a couple days ago.
So no harm no foul, and here's some pictures to show you what I mean.
1. This is the very worst example I could find. So weird. I doubt this one will fill in all the way, it's already too tall. She's going to be a bud with a nub. Lol.
2. This one isn't as bad vertically, but shows little side foxies coming out around the top. There's a couple like this. Both this and the first picture are upper level bud tops.
3. Here's one from the next level down, showing that as you get further from the light/heat, you get less of the foxtailing effect.
The bottoms look normal. And so there you go. She'll be fine. It gave me an opportunity to give you my two cents on foxtails.
This last picture is just a sweet frost shot I caught.
