InTheShed Grows Inside & Out: Jump In Any Time

ProMix HP does have mycorrhizae in it. And I recall that you add myco when you up-pot also. But you aren’t providing food (raw minerals) for the herd - only inorganic salts (with an aminochelate, in the case of MegaCrop). So, since you are feeding the plant instead of the microherd, the ProMix is essentially just a porous structure to support the plant, rather than a LOS.
ProMix is not just porous structure (like coco) as it includes lime for pH buffering. As farside mentioned, the mycos in ProMix is different from the microherd in LOS.
How different is this than hydro? And, would a hydro pH closer to 6.0 possibly be more appropriate than a soil pH close to 6.5, in order to maximize nutrient uptake without the assistance of the herd?
This isn't hydro so pH'ing nutrients is unnecessary, and different from the pH of soil because ProMix lacks the humus that forms the basis of most soil blends. I can't tell you why they pH PM to 5.8 where soil is pH'd to 6.3-6.7, but I'm sure they can.
Thanks for that - I thought it was buffered to mid -6s. Isn’t a pH 5.8 inconsistent with the pH needed for mycorrhizae to properly function? Why bother to include it?
I don't know the pH that mycorrhizae need to function, but I don't know why that ProMix would include it if it were ineffective, unless it's all a marketing ploy like say, Bud Explosion. ;)
Ill take a stab at this.
I believe its all in the pH drift and the time it takes to get to that pH of 5.8.
I think the pH of ProMix settles ~5.8 within a week of wetting it. Not sure if that makes a difference to the conversation though...
I think you are confusing Myco's/Fungi with Bacteria which is the main "micro herd" of LOS.
Thanks farside! I'm glad that the microherd is something I don't have to think about :).

Two things for the record: I have no idea if adding mykos to my ProMix makes any difference to my plants. It could all be bro-science (a term that dates back to at least 2001), but I do it anyway. Please note that I do not go around to other grow journals touting mykos as a must-have for cannabis.

And this is my ProMix bag, posted just this past Friday funnily enough!

Shed I have picked up things from your journal and I Love the banter and humor. I still have to grow Candida this spring Thanks for the recommendations. Thank You for this Great journal

Thanks PCa! I'm glad you can find bits of information among all the humor :). I'm really looking forward to your Candida grow. I enjoy watching folks grow it and use it for the great properties it brings. I'm keeping tabs on @Heavenly Hybrid's right now and it's looking really good.
Hey InTheShed! Hope everything is going good in life
:ciao: Flagg! My daughter is driving back to college, so there's about 6 hours of worrying until she texts us "HERE!" Other than that, things are going pretty well. I hope all is well with you!

I used to use Pro-Mix BX with mycos included for about 3 years. Now I make my own Faux-Mix HP® that contains no mycos and have grown 3 crops in it. I haven't noticed a difference.

I suppose if I were interested in doing a true comparison, I could do clones, and some with and some without added mycos. Wait, I can just look at a picture on someone elses journal and determine that, despite different environments, lights, strains, etc. Seems to work for other "advanced" growers around here. I'm just a novice, or broke, I can't decide.

Jokes aside, next time I transplant the same-strain clones into 1g pots, I will add mykos to one pot and none to the other. First one with roots out the holes wins! It won't test mykos vs none because it will be in the ProMix HP, but it will tell me if I need to replace that bag of Mykos when I run out.

Might be a long time though if I stick to the three-plant-in-flower rule.

A control plant vs expiremental plant. Novel concept. Maybe you should contact the FDA and suggest that. You know, like testing an actual drug against a placebo.
