Wednesday update on the pollen collection I did last night, and
this is not a tutorial, merely a documentation of what happened!
I've been collecting male sacs off the STS Sour G in the drying box for a couple of weeks, but for the past few days I haven't been using any of the pollen to pollinate the flowering plants, as those seem to be plenty seeded. So I thought I would try saving some pollen to see if I can improve my technique.
Here is the gear I got ready:
And here is the collection of sacs and pollen:
I dumped the contents of the box into the strainer above the tin foil and used a paintbrush to make sure the pollen was out:
But I ended up with a lot of plant bits:
So I grabbed an 80 mesh strainer from my pottery days and ran it through that:
Here is what I ended up with:
@Carcass recommended a couple of silicon beads from one of those gel packs rather than using rice, so I added those to a tube and poured in the pollen:
Not a lot, and It doesn't have that pure yellow pollen look because there's some detritus from fine plant material, but hopefully it's clean enough to work. This is just a test to see if it will keep in the fridge for a few months and still be effective. I don't have any use for it since I'm not interested in making crosses, but I will test it on something with flowers at the end of the summer to see if I get seeds.
Speaking of seeds, this is one of the tops on the STS Sour G (flip day 35):
Looks pretty well self-seeded to me, no?
Finally for the day, the last surviving lime tree cutting (the first didn't survive the heat wave we got a few weeks back):
Looks good to me! I'll be moving it to a 1 gallon pot pretty soon so I don't have to water it as often.
I hope all is well with you and yours!
