InTheShed Grows Inside & Out: Jump In Any Time

Congrats on a glorious harvest, Shed! Nice trim game too. Those buds look very tasty, I love the color on them.
Thank you Jon! My back starts to hurt just thinking about all that trimming I did on my own. :)
Assuming you're with me so far, your Doug Varin was an indoor/outdoor plant, correct? So my question is, do you notice a difference along the lines of what I'm describing with an indoor/outdoor vs. a straight indoor vs. a straight outdoor?
I'm not sure I can answer that one. Do my plants look like inside or outside ones to you based on your stemage distinction? Since all my plants are grown exactly the same way I have no basis for comparison. I feel like I grow them like inside plants but I use the sun as my light source. I trim and train in a similar way to tent growers and certainly don't grow the kind of monsters that folks in the ground can produce.

I wish I had a better answer.
That bowl of Doug's Varin buds looks most appealing Shed!
Thanks Stunger! They are a pretty green, but I think that purple hue is an artifact of the lighting in the kitchen.

Fair enough. I see what you mean, yours don't really fit any of the three categories I put out. Pure Shed grow, lol. Not indoor, not outdoor, not indoor/outdoor...more like an indoor grow with maybe 8 hours a day of augmented sunlight, yes? I don't know, I'd have to see your buds closer and break one up by hand. I guess what I'm referring to is the stemage inside the buds. Seems like in an LED/tent only grow, I get buds that basically have the central stem, and all the "individual bud pieces" that make up that bud peel off the central stem. My outdoor buds all had more twisty type stem formation inside the bud. Where if you picked one apart by hand rather than toss a straight stem out you'd be tossing out twisted stems with side branching.

I am likely making no sense. I may need to regroup on expressing this. Sorry, lol!

Quicky Friday evening update after a very windy day here. Lots blown over but nothing damaged. Phewf!

Since the buds were at 62% this morning, here is the final weight for the Doug's Varin, harvested on April 9th and with another week left of burping:

That's 247g (8.7 oz), and at 158 days above soil it works out to 1.6g/day. Not my best but it's okay for a late winter grow! One of these days I'll get my harvest spreadsheet updated. :hmmmm:

I hope you all have great weekends planned and that the weather cooperates. Stay safe out there!

You betcha!

LOL thanks Jon!

Sure why not? As long as I don't have to add yet another year to the count!

Thanks sb! 3 day old today, and maybe pics this weekend as proof of life. :)

Birthdays come but once a year, unless you're me it seems!
That's a fine harvest Shed! Nice appeal!

Congrats on the DV harvest, Shed! She looks tasty.

Can't wait for the comprehensive familial reviews! :Rasta:

I almost always wait for the seed to split (at least) before I plant it, but I have also been told (and many do this) to plant it after 24 hour soak, whether it's split or not.

The pro to waiting for a split is that you know you will at least get a tap root out of it. If you plant it without a split you don't know if you're expecting anything 3 days later or not!
Thanks for the welcome and the info, Shed. I've been learning a lot from searching this thread.

I used paper towel to germ two seeds, and neither cracked after nearly two days so I tossed three more in a glass of water. This morning 3/3 of the seeds in the glass have tails. One after 24 hrs, and the other two after 48 hrs. I checked back on the PT seeds and one did crack so it's 1/2 with that method. Those seeds might have been fresher though... But I think I'll use a glass of water from now on.

Since the seeds were just harvested, I thought the germ rate would be much lower than 4/5 and now I've got two extra sprouts. I don't have the space for those two for a few weeks so I'm going to follow how @BooWho2 grows her autos here. See how useful this thread is :cheesygrinsmiley:

Also o_O That seed jumping out of it's shell!

InTheShed said:
When that happens to me I can never get them to grow.

I've read the seed coat can sense external cues and transfer information about the environment to the embryo. The signals received through the seed coat coordinate its physiology and development. I guess they need their thinking caps on to figure out what they're going to do next.

Congrats on the big beautiful Doug Varin harvest. 8.7 oz is nothing to sneeze at! How come you'll continue to burp for a week with the buds already at 62%?

Monday update for y'all! Sorry for my weekend absence so I hope this post will make up for it. :)

First, let's take a look at the Summer grow this morning on day 6:

Purple Urkle leads a bit at this point (it's also planted higher) but I'll try to get them to the same size before I flip them. :cheesygrinsmiley:

I was looking at the big Candida this weekend (last seen here) and wondering why I was so hesitant to flip it, and I realized I had been waiting for it to look healthier, as it's been looking kinda down in the dumps lately:

I realized it was never going to look much better and was really long in the tooth, so I made an executive decision:

Enough! It was going to be impossibly large and floppy in flower in addition to it not being in the best of health and a home for aphids.

Instead, I upcanned the Candida mother plant this morning:

A little @DYNOMYCO blended in for added oomph:

Roots!

Before I planted it I sliced them with a razor blade, down the sides and hatched across the bottom. @Amy Gardner taught me to spray the sides of the rootball with water to get the mycorrhizae to stick, so I did!

Here it is all settled in its new 7 gallon pot:

I watered it and put it in the dappled shade. It won't get full sun until Thursday. Sometime this week I'll give it a trim, start a new mother, and flip this in a few weeks.

Here it is next to the Jack Herer 1.1 clone:

And speaking of the Jack Herer, I flipped that last night, so for @BeezLuiz' spreadsheet this is the height at flip:

Let's call it 37".

That's it for me today. Tomorrow I'll get a pic of the Sour G's STS seed-making project for your perusal. I hope your weekend went well and your week is smooth sailing. :surf:

I'd say I got the best smoke report I'm going to get on that. :) Thanks GDB!
Nice harvest on the DV!
Thank you BigD!
Wow over 8ozs. in 158 days and they never look that big when you show them , maybe set a chair next to them for reference when taking pics.?? Looks Good
LOL thanks sb! I will try remember to get a chair next to my harvest pics next time. :thumb:
Another one bites the dust congratulations on another great grow
Thanky dynamo!
Congrats on the big beautiful Doug Varin harvest. 8.7 oz is nothing to sneeze at!
No sneezing at all! I'm good with 1.5g/day for sure. Thanks Adora!
That seed jumping out of it's shell!
IKR? That's why many folks stick to a 24 hour max. I guess if you're home a lot to check on them then they wouldn't have a chance to jump shell though...
I'm going to follow how @BooWho2 grows her autos here. See how useful this thread is
That is an excellent decision. :thumb:
Since the seeds were just harvested, I thought the germ rate would be much lower than 4/5 and now I've got two extra sprouts.
I didn't realize these were fresh seeds. Did you give them 2-3 weeks to dry out before planting them? I've heard that's best practices.
How come you'll continue to burp for a week with the buds already at 62%?
Good question! I give my harvests 21 days to outgas as much chlorophyll as possible before I seal them up in jars for curing. Ideally that's 7 days hanging, 7 days of 2x/day burping, and 7 days of once a day burping. Getting them down to 62% isn't the reason for the burping, it's an added benefit.

Sometimes mine end up higher or lower than that (depending on the time of year), so I often need to move them back to 62% before I seal them at the end of 21 days. This harvest will probably end up lower so I'm hoping for a few damp nights later this week so I can leave them open on the ping pong table for 15 minutes to absorb some moisture!

It's nice looking at your plants because they look like plants. Mine are currently only nice when they are babies. Once they are released into the world they become distorted and twisted until they finally disappear from the face of the earth. It'll probably be the same with the kids.

Hi Shed. I hope you had a good weekend. How did you perform the cutting / scarification exactly? How many and what kind of slices are made and why? I know you've written about it before but the memory is unclear, sorry.

LOL! I am sure you will do better with the kids, but please don't spray them with Tabasco to keep them safe. They hate that.

Np! I took a razor blade and ran it down the side every 2" or so about ¼" deep, making sure the roots got sliced and not just dragged down. Across the bottom I made a ~1" square checkerboard.

That's more like it! Executive decisions must be made. again
Indeed. I pictured myself trying to carry that around in full flower and gave the leaves the once over and out came the bow pruning saw! I've been giving the mother reduced sunlight to keep it small, so once it gets used to the transplant and the trimming it should take off with full light.
nice one
Nice garden(ing), Shed. The JH and Candida look great!
Thanks DD! Needs must.
And one less to schlep in and out
Especially since I just added two last week. ;)
Man, that JH is sure looking good!
Thanks Carcass! It's bushier than my usual at flip but I was tired of waiting for the right time. Just a bit more to trim in three weeks I reckon.

Evening @InTheShed!

First, I have to say....

:adore:

You just displayed a big difference between an extremely experienced grower and me. I could not have chopped that plant in a trillion years. But you know better it seems. Wow. Just wow. Thanks. I thought I made Executive Decisions too, but apparently I make executive decisions.....Lol!

Meanwhile, ooh la la, that Jack!!!! I betcha she gets close to 60 inches by the time it's all said and done? What do you think? Also, what sort of yield are you talking from that sort of BEAST?

Definitely made up for the weekend. Lmao. As if you would ever have to.

Thanks Jon! Having a sizeable mother plant and a big bag of flowers still waiting to hit the MB machine made the decision easier. Of course, because of all those things it was possible to keep the plant around longer than anyone should to begin with (including me), so this was a very specific case. I can't think of a time I didn't keep to some sort of grow/flip/harvest schedule on a THC plant.

I can play fast and loose with the Candidas because of the ongoing cloning. Still have three in perlite that should have been planted 2 weeks ago at least. I may just toss them and clone the cuttings from the mother this week!

Also @BeezLuiz calculated the last JH stretch at 4.1%, so I don't think I'm in for a monster...we'll see. :) And I never predict yield on any of my plants, but I like to hit 8+ ounces and/or 1.5g/day. I never have any idea until the weigh in though.

My personal best is 12.52 ounces on the Berry Bomb in 2019, but my highest g/day was the Chocolope from @Weed Seeds Express which came in at 2.6.
