Increasing yield with defoliation indoors: What's it mean? How to do it?

I'm not looking at the pics you refer too so forgive me a little. But I had a LED. It had some issues, but once fixed the actual draw was 540 watts iirc. I had added some cfl's in the corners because the area was too big for the one . So it was supplemental lighting.
I do occasionally take pics right after lights off or right before lights on for better viewing. But no longer use cfl's for growing.
I now grow mainly with hps. 1k watts. However, I have recently been given two led's to run a grow on as a test. My issues with the led's was for my methods of growing I didn't feel I was getting enough area spread and penetration for this style. One can gain area with more led fixtures, but that's expensive too, and for many of us smaller growers, possibly too expensive.
I am of the opinion that probably better than 80% of the led sellers are a sham. I am no expert, but when there is very little true disclosure, coupled with tons of "spin", buyer beware, it's probably junk.
That being said, I also believe there may be a few companies really trying to succeed and make a good product for the long haul. The next few years should be really interesting in this field. I'll offer my true opinion on the lights I am testing once I have done a grow with them. I will do a full journal (which will be updated in my sig) using these two lights soon. I hope they produce well, and it is a sponsor here at 420mag.
This may not help your situation right now to your full liking, but it might give you some insight and thoughts on patience before going led or at least tons of research into any brand of interest.
And yes, of course, knowing your current setup could shed some light (pun intended) on your ideas.
Wow! This is a Great thread about defoliation and a good read. Amazing results and pictures. Thank you for this. I will be defoliating and bending on my second grow and feel confident doing it with so much good information here.
Forgot to ask. Would you still do a two week flush when defoliating? Since I've read that it uses the energy in the leaves during this period will a flush hurt since the fan leaves are gone?

My first thought is it would at least shorten the flushing period. These questions are based on assuming a flush with just water.

why are you flushing at 2 weeks?
Hey Hash Hound. My soil grow is not organic and I want the highest quality weed I can get. I've read in many places that a 2 week flush before harvest is recommended to get all the fertilizer out. What would you recommend? Is it not needed when defoliating?
Sorry I misunderstood earlier, I thought you were only 2 weeks into flower not 2 weeks from harvest.
No harm giving them a flush a week or two before harvest.
I have been defoling 21 days 42 days as recommended then a week before harvest I get most of the big remaining leaves off.
It's been working so far.
It depends on the plant a lot too. I did the first defol at 14 days this time. There were some giant leaves blocking a lot of growth.

Hi folks, I've tried searching this thread for the answer to this question, alas, to no avail. I am in the 9th week of grow, 5th week of 12/12 flowering, and wonder if defoliation, selective or otherwise, is a bad idea cuz it's too late in the grow? It looks like a terrific yield increaser and I coud go for that. This is my 3rd crop and my yields have been rather lacking considering the numbers being bandied about here. More that 1 1/2 dry ozs per plant? Where do I sign up?
Hi dlchobbes! I just defol`d my girl and she was in 8 weeks flower. Didn't do any harm that I noticed. I can say my buds are getting fatter since. Not sure if it's from defol or normal progression but they are getting fat. You can check it out in my link. I'm pretty sure you'll be ok.

Thank you, AS. (I notice that's what some call you on your blog.) Nice chronicle. Man, I'm nervous about defoliating, was thinking their existence is to protect the buds from burning. Maybe the light/heat control we have it's not such a problem. I'm gonna try it on one tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Chickened out, but compromised. I was worried that taking the fan leaves off completely would compromise the plant, what with the shock and all. So I took rubber bands (Our paper gets delivered with 'em and I never can find enough uses for them.), gathered the fronds of each leaf together folded them over and closed them up. 4 plants, probably did 50 or 60 leaves. A little softer. Here's hoping it works.

Hey man how's it goin I read all ur post very interesting stuff. I recently striped mine I did it a lil early they had 6 7 sets of leaves their only like 4" tall now they are deff bushin out but how long should I wait til I do it again? I have a 400w MH for veg m a 400w hps when should I switch to the hps? and my space is only 2' by 2.5' by 5.5' tall.

If you're replying to my thread, I don't strip, I wrap. And I'm in the 9th week. I found stripping that early (I did it once) caused my plant to stop growing. I hope that doesn't happen to you.

I hope not they r growing slowly but now they r releafed n starting to jump up. They r bout 5" tall with about 12-14 branches on em already. But I was referring to bassman I just had a few questions. But if anyone can help me out it'd be apprieciated. Thank u
