Icemud's Breeding Projects And Motherchucking Pollination Extravaganza

There's always lots more to learn about growing. Good thing it's likely going to be a lifelong hobby. Plenty of time to learn. Can't wait for the space to grow more. Breeding will absolutely be part of the growing fun.

I agree! I am starting to think I love growing and breeding more than I love cannabis itself.. LOL well maybe thats extreme..LOL I honestly love the challenges of growing and trying to produce the best nugs a plant can offer and that drive keeps me learning :) Breeding added an entire new attraction to me and I love it!!! My only complaint is now not having enough space for all of my breeding projects I want to accompish. LOL

Hey Everyone!!! Hope all of you are safe, healthy and doing great!!!

Quick update: Last night (Day 64 flowering from flip), I decided it was time that the Gods Gift seed project was cut down and hung to dry. I haven't posted many late flowering photos of this project as I screwed up again, and got off my regiment of normal feedings and did a Oraganic nutrient feeding which screwed everything up. Since the organic nutrients (earthjuice) come at such a low PH (usually Ph4 or lower), generally you have to bubble them for 2 days prior to using them to allow the ph to come up. I rushed this by adding PH up to feed my plants which were already wilting and since the ph was so low, I had to add a lot of ph up... well, that pretty much raised the EC too high and in my gut I told myself to dump the feeding and start over, but I didn't and fed the girls.... well needless to day a week later most of the leaves were brown and I roasted many of the buds that were too close to the lights.... So kind of embarrased of how the plants looked so I didn't take any photos after this happened.

I don't believe that it effected the seeds much, as I pulled a few before I tore down the grow and they were brown and tiger striped so mature enough for me. Overall the Gods Gift 2 females were not that impressive, as they were extremely leafy, lacked a lot of trichomes, and really had a very weak terpene smell. I think I would have had to pheno hunt these better and have better females to choose from to find a "keeper" but since I used 5 males, hopefully some of the progeny/offspring will be better than the 2 females I got.

Lets just say I wasn't pleased at all with this grow, so I tore it down a little early because I am anxious to start my next one already, the Orange Fruity Pebbles OG which smells spectacular! I will be doing an update on that in a few days, as well as I will do a final "harvest report" of the seed haul when all is dry and deseeded.

Have a great day everyone and a Happy 4th of July aka Independence Day!!!

I sure understand this. Almost all my problems of late have been caused by a pH pen that went bad. A new pen properly calibrated was the remedy but not before making ugly plants.

I had that issue a few years ago with the electronic PH pens... stopped using it and went with the ph drops and like them much better. I definitely could use a PPM meter though.. I haven't used my old one in years, but would have definitely prevented my error of too high of ec... I gotta stop "experimenting" during cycles.. LOL

Sorry to hear you had a bad round, Brother! :sorry:
It happens to the best of us!

Yea overall it was going great up until I made that organic feeding and used a ton of PH up. I even tried a few heavy light feedings afterwords as mostly flushes, but was already too late and the damage was done. Luckilly it happened late in flowering so most likely the seeds will be fine which is really what I am after anyhow :)

On a good note, the gods gift did produce some very chunky buds, I mean thick! so that is definitely a good thing. The other good note is that overall the gods gift was very easy to grow and through most of the grow showed no temperment at all. Even in the end, the majority of the gods gift plants were OK, other than a few of the buds that were the closest to the light which really took a brunt of the damage. So hopefully if anything the gods gift will share their ease of growing and bulky buds traits with my other strains :)

Hey everyone!!! So here it is... The long awaited Gods Gift Seed project results and review.

Overview: This project was overall a success and the result of making tons of seeds was accomplished! Hooray! Overall I had planted

Since my breeding notes cover most of the observations and overview.. Here are my personal breeding notes for this project:

Breeding Notes:
Gods Gift Regular Seed Project.

Seed source:
Hazeman at Infinity Genetics. I asked Hazeman where he got the Gods Gift from or how he made it and was told:

"No they where seeds and there f2 grand daddy purple x og kush. Got them in a trade from a guy in California. Grew them and it was outstanding strain so I made seeds."

Germination:

8 of the Gods gift seeds were put into water 2 of the seeds cracked first and for some reason the seeds cracked wide open and the entire taproot and embryo with cotyledon came out and was floating in the water. Those were put in soil about a week ago...(Around December 13th (Friday the 13th), 2019, is when the seeds were put in water).

Of the remaining 6 seeds, 5 cracked and the taproot showed and all were placed into soil about a week ago as well (a couple took longer). As of December 20th, 2019, of the 5 seeds in soil. So far 3 of them have emerged from the soil, 1 seems to be struggling and 2 look healthy. 2 of the others have yet to pop out of the soil, and the other 2 mentioned above which separted from the seed, also have not come up out of the soil. I'm hoping over the next week more will pop, but only time will tell. 1 seed is still soaking in water and has not popped yet.

The 2 healthy ones began to grow, the 1 straggler took about 2-3 weeks to really grow at all, but now has corrected itself and caught up with the others. None of the other seeds emerged from the soil, so I took the remaining 4 Gods Gift seeds and put them into water. All 4 cracked and were placed into soil.

About 1 week later 3 of the 4 new seeds has come up in the soil, bringing the total amount of plants to 6 gods gift.

VEG:

Around January 29th, or a little more than a month after germination, all 6 of the gods gift plants were topped. The oldest 2 were about 12" tall and the 4 younger plants were about 10" tall. The plants are growing very uniform in size, structure and leaves. Not much difference between the plants visually is noticed. There are 2 with a slight more taller/lanky build but not by much. At this point the plants are about 30 days old.

GODS GIFT PROJECT UPDATE (last day of veg) April 28, 2020

The Gods Gift project has been in veg now since the seeds were first placed into soil around December 19th so they have been now in veg for about 4.5 months. (much longer than I would have liked). Due to my situation and having perpetual grows, its very hard to judge the timing between my veg and flowering tents, therefore due to these plants intense vigor and the long veg period, I've had to top them numerous times through the 4 month period.

Plant Sexes:
Overall out of 6 plants, 4 are suspected at this time to be male and 2 are definitely female. All 6 of the plants are almost identical in height, node spacing is very similar, branching is similar and leaf size and structure is similar. All of the 6 phenos do have slight differences but overall the seem to be less variation that I would have expected. Stem rubs on the males do show that there seem to be 2 distinct terpene profiles, where one has a more fuel/dill pickle smell which I would assume is leaning more OG kush heavy. The other stem rub reveals a sweet, slight berry, hot wax smell which is definitely more of a trait of the berry strains like BCS and GDP.

The 2 Females:

Both of the females are very similar in structure, height and branching, however they also do have distinct differences between them. The terpene profiles are both different based on a stemrub, leaf profiles are different slightly, and branching structure although similar does have some unique differences.

Phenotype #4
VEG:
This phenotype definitely leans more towards the GDP parent in structure/branching, stem rub/terpenes and leafy/node growth trait, however has the long stretchy internodes of typical OG kushes. The stems are thick and seem to be quite rigid. The internodes on this have very leafy nodes similar to how GDP grows where a lot of "cleanup pruning" is needed to control the larf quite often. This phenotype also has the lanky long "wacky" branching that GDP typically shows on the lower branches where it has vine like characteristics. On a stem rub, the terpenes reveal a sweet berry mixed with a hot wax smell which is very similar to other berry strains I've grown. The leaves on this pheno are showing a slight nitrogen toxicity from their last feeding as well as slightly "bluish" leaves so I will have to ease up on the nitrogen next cycle. GDP is definitely a very finicky plant in my experience, so also this phenotype definitely shows a little more stress to nutrients than the other pheno which has none shown.

Flowering: This phenotype of gods gift grew tall and topped out around 5’. The buds were quite large, and I had 1 primary cola and a few side colas. The buds overall were very leafy, definitely not “trimmer friendly” but did pack on some good weight and girth. The trichome development was not great, but not horrible I would rate it probably a 5 out of 10. The fragrance and terp profile was definitely the typical gods gift.. gas/kushy blended nicely with a slight grape/fruit punch and a spice. The terpene strength was also not very strong so I would rate the terpenes around 5 or 6 out of 10. Overall these were F2’s I believe, which usually have quite a bit of variation, so I think that if worked a little this line would have some promise to it. Pluses: ease of growth, large heavy buds, good solid structure, terpene profile was good smelling, but light…. Cons: mediocre terpene strength, trichome density average or below average, leafy.

Phenotype #7
VEG:
This phenotype definitely leans more to the OG Kush parent. Although similar in overall structure, height, branching to the other phenotype of gods gift, this pheno definitely shows more similarity to traditional OG kushes. The stems on this phenotype are sturdy with long internodes and much less "larfy internode leaf" as the other phenotype which is more typical of an OG kush. This phenotype still does have some of those "wacky" branches on GDP but overall the structure resembles more of OG kush. A stem rub on this phenotype reveals a dill pickle/fuel smell which definitely is a trait of OG Kush plants so most likely the terpenes will lean more in this direction. This plant is showing less nutrient stress than the other phenotype so it seems to be more tolerant of "hot" N feedings than the other.

Flowering/harvest: This phenotype was NOT the select phenotype of the 2 females. Overall the buds were smaller than pheno 4 (although there were 2 main tops instead of 1 on #4), the girth was significantly smaller. This phenotype was also very leafy and would not be pleasant to trim, however under the leaf there were decently dense buds. Trichome development was average at best, and the buds were definitely not as sticky as I would have preferred. Terpene profile was fairly bland where nothing really stuck out or was amazing, and it had just a bland kushy type cannabis smell, but defintely not the grape, or gas that Gods Gift usually has… The pros are that the pheno overall was pretty easy to grow, and actually grew quite well until I stunted their growth by giving too high of EC nutrients mid flowering. Overall pheno 4 would be a much better choice for future breeding.

Overall Veg impressions:

Its been actually quite pleasant growing the Gods Gift through Veg as they have been extremely hardy, easy to grow, tolerant plants which exploded in growth once the roots established. All of the plants including the males really throw off quite a bit of fragrance when the leaves and branches are moved around. Having grown both parents (GDP and OG kush) I find that the Gods Gift is a great blend of the best of the attributes of each strain and look forward to how they perform in flowering. Thus far I would say for ease of growing 5 out of 5.

Today I will be setting the timers for 12/12 and we will watch as these beauties go into flowering. I have taken clones of each of the female phenotypes and will chose one for future seed projects based on how they perform in early and mid flowering.

Overall flowering and harvest observations:

Overall, the Gods gift was not a horrible project, but it was nothing amazing either. The Gods gift phenos (both) grew fast, hardy and were pretty easy to grow which was a plus. The plant structure, bud size/density was good and node spacing was good. The cons: terpene strength was sub par, trichome formation was also below average, and the buds were extremely leafy. In mid-late flowering I gave too strong of a nutrient feeding which burned a lot of the leaves that were in direct light on the buds as well as many of the fan leaves, which could have hurt the trichome and terpene production, but overall I think this lack was because of the chemotype, and not the feedings, as prior to the feeding the terpenes and trichomes were also still mediocre. Overall I think that the Gods Gift line would need to be pheno hunted from pheno #4 as I do think there is much potential in the line, however the 2 phenotypes I received that were female were definitely not “farm ready” in any way.

So overall... The Gods Gift Project was a success, however I was not happy with the 2 phenos of Gods Gift that I had grown.
The pros: Easy to grow, large buds, nice sturdy structure, good node spacing, the high.
The cons: mediocre terpene strength, mediocre trichome production, Extremely leafy buds.

This would be a great strain to either work into perfection to get better flavor, potency and less leafyness, or would be great to mix with other current strains to improve structure or yield or hardyness but was not a "farm ready" type strain where the phenos definitely don't stand up against other modern strains on the market (at least these phenos).

I did get a chance to smoke a bud of each plant, from the "bag technique" that I did, and I was actually very impressed with phenotype 4... The high was very very heavy... very indica dom where I would catch myself staring at things in a daze, not really realizing I was staring for so long... very heavy sedating high which was good and true to the gods gift genetics.

things I learned:
pollination time:
I did manage to learn a few things with this grow vs other seed projects in the past.... one being the "length of time" to allow pollination to happen. ON past seed projects I left the male plants "open pollinating" for weeks at a time... and was always getting a ton of seeds, but half would be immature/premature and or duds... This time around, I only let the males pollinate the females for about 5 days and then removed the males from the project. This ensured that the date of pollination was much closer for all plants and that all the resulting seeds would present more maturity than having 50/50 of mature vs non mature seeds. It seemed to work, as the results I got with this project were mostly mature "tiger striped" seeds, and got very little premature "white" seeds. So this was definitely a nice lesson to take for future seed projects... Less time pollinating the better outcome of mature seeds.

The "Bag" technique: The other big "trial" that I experimented with on this grow was using a sandwich bag to cover some of the buds to prevent them from being pollinated. I can say that this technique "somewhat worked" and did allow me to harvest a few seedless (or almost seedless) tester buds that I could smoke. What I did was during the pollination period, I covered 1 top bud on each phenotype with a sandwich bag. I loosely let the bag stay open to allow air exchange and prevent mold from moisture, but also to keep off most of the pollen that was being spread. Well this technique worked fairly well, and all 3 of the buds I tried this on had "almost" no seeds which allowed me to smoke each of the buds... without having to pick through tons of premature seed material. A few seeds did manage to form in one of the buds... but overall it was so few that I was still able to pack a bowl and try it, without gettting the taste of burned seeds which was a huge plus... So I definitely will be trying this on future projects and may work on a way to help seal the bottom of the bags better, but still allow some air exchange.

The inclusion of my creation: Black Cherry Soda x Black Diamond OG.
Part of this project which was exciting to me was this was the 1st time that I planted one of my own seed creations to include in this project. I chose feminized seeds from my 1st seed project Black Cherry Soda x Black Diamond OG. Normally if I was actually going through the motions of creating a new strain, I would never pollinate a random untested strain, however since this was more of an experiment to see how my 1st hybrid cross turned out, I was all for it.... and let me say... I am very impressed. The BCS x BDOG came out excellent, very resin covered, the terpenes were really amazing and had a almost cherry robatussin smell to them, a chemical cherry medicine with a deep OG kush smell also. I also used the bag technique on this plant and was able to smoke some of it, and wow!!! very good flavor and extremely heavy but uplifting high... very sativa dom which was unexpected. I am really happy that I chose to try this out, and liked the strain so much I cloned it and will be including it in my next seed project as well.

Here are a few photos of the Gods Gift phenos 4 and 7 (females)

Final Seed Harvest:

What is coming next:
Next up, I am preparing to put some Orange Fruity Pebbles OG into flowering which will represent the next seed project. Within this project I am including my BCS x BDOG strain, as well as I popped 1 Cannarado Birthday Cake S1 which will also be included in the seed project. Currently this project is in late veg, and I topped all the girls.

Also, I will probably not be including as many photos in my future posts. I re-read the user agreement here at 420 magazine and never realized that every photo that a user uploads is automatically granted copyright to 420 magazine, which I don't like... so I will most likely be refraining from posting any photos except for special occasions. It bummed me out to know the 7+ years of cannabis photos I have uploaded I have lost the rights to.. that is unfortunate but reality... therefore posting pictures will be far and few between.

... :thumb: :thumb: ...except for the no more pics part...:(cheerz...:high-five:...h00k...:hookah:

I will still post photos, just not as many and not as frequent.... don't want to lose all the good shots to copyright. Gotta save some for myself too :) lol

So your next one is Orange FPOG?

Yep.. its already in veg... The OFPOG is odd, one of the males started pushing pollen sacks in veg, and at the same time, all of them started stretching, but still in 18/6 schedule... almost like they were programed to initiate the flowering stretch based on time... So far it looks like 3 females, 4 males but still hard to tell. They got very big.. about 4' tall so I cut them in half and I am awaiting the lowers to fill out. Didn't want 6' flowering plants in my 7' tent.. LOL

I will do a post in a few days on the OFPOG... They smell phenomenal!!! Some have a rubber/asphalt smell, and others have a sweet sunny delight orange juice smell. Very strong terps too in a stem rub!

I haven't decided what seeds I will be popping next, but most likely it will either be DJ short blueberry, Chocolate Thai or Super Stawberry Diesel. I'm leaning towards the DJ short blueberry because I love that terp profile... plus I owe the breeder that gifted them to me some replacement beans, and I hate owing anyone anything.. LOL so I want to get that squared away quickly.. LOL So most likely it will be the DJ Short blueberry, but I also really want to do Chocolate Thai too... so we will see.

I would roll with the Chocolate Thai but I’d love to see how your Blueberry from DJ turns out. I’ve grown a few from DJ that never developed Blueberry terps just a sweet earthy taste. One of the best bedtime strains I’ve found so far.

I've heard that about blueberry from a few people that the "newer" the seed stock is, the harder it seems for people to find those blueberry terps... Part of the reason I am still debating whether to run those next or the chocolate thai... Either I will be happy with, so I may have to flip a coin.. I have wanted to do chocolate Thai for a while now, and its rare to see around the market so I think it may be a very strong choice :) I've never tasted pure chocolate thai... only chocolope which was fantastic, so really interested in the differences. :)
