Hyena's Never-Ending Adventures In Growing

Oh sorry man, I apologize that made it sound misleading that I was growing Super Bud, I am growing X-Wing OG X PhishHead Kush that's doing the same thing within 12-13 inches or so of my light. Nothing I can do about it anymore as they've shot to the moon and are already all bent over and supported and within good distances now. My leaves looked virtually like yours though and the first mimicking signs of PK deficiency from the light burn on about 6-7 leaves.

I can't believe yours are still lightening up running at 50%! I have to go back and look for the model of lights you got for this run, that's insane.

Are you running Green House's Super Bud, or the Sensi Ed Rosenthal Super Bud? Either way, the Green House being Big Bud X Skunk wouldn't be a light sensitive plant, and Ed's isn't either, I'd conclude those are just some DAMN powerful lights. Green House's version is typically very light hungry.

Just dug back to see it's the 600H, looks like a beast. My first go with LED might be the 550 V2 model.

These lights are freaking unbelievable. I'm convinced the bleaching of the upper leaves is simply over-lumination. That's a new term I just made up because existing language is insufficient to fully describe these babies. I have never moved them from the ceiling, from the beginning...and right now they are set at 50% and still producing the thickest canopy I have ever seen!

I hope people order them, I have never seen anything quite like these results and I'm no pro grower! You may recall I accidentally had these lights off for an entire week earlier in this grow, and I also flooded my pots 12 hours a day for another week, and still this amount of growth. Hopefully the finish will be half as good as the start!

Peace, Hyena

There are some bad LED companies out there. But the newer technology is seriously top notch. I grow with the Fluence Spydrx Plus (very pricey but has paid for itself over a few times now) and have been blown away by the results.

Take a look at LEDs but my advice is don't go cheap and expect a 1000 watt LED bought on EBay for 200$ to be a representation of all LEDs and compare that to the old HPS. If you want legit yielding power and reduced heat and power requirements, go with quality LED stuff. There is a lot out there to choose from but they all generally come with some sticker shock. HPS can't compete with the new LED technology.

WELL said...I did some comparative grows with a couple different Chinese LED models and you ABSOLUTELY get what you pay for! Now that I am attempting a boutique "pro" grow, I have realized the incredible importance of the engines of light (food) for our girls. Honestly, if anything, I am wondering a little if these might be even TOO MUCH...? What if these plants get so much light they morph into superplants or something?? Might I even be in danger at some point???

I saw Little Shop of Horrors, pal... :meatballs:

Peace, Hyena

THANKS so much...I sincerely appreciate all you said!

Hard to imagine someone reading everything I have written...hope you got some helpful info out of all that smarmy flatulence I call a journal! In truth the biggest thing I have learned is that cannabis growing, like most things that are worthwhile, is a lot harder to do well that it first seems. But it's worth the time and effort!!

And it always makes a cool story, right?

Absolutely a cool story. I very much enjoyed reading it all. Although I must admit it was nice to be able to keep scrolling when an issue arose, and not having to wait for the next update. :D

Regarding the airflow path and the position of the carbon filter, the only reason I don't do it exactly as you have described is the freaking thing weighs EIGHTY pounds. Building a stand for it was something I decided against for time and other reasons. I figured I would go step by step and complete a run and see how it went. I do mitigate the buildup of moisture between leaves by having four fans in there. The air swirls around pretty well. I just added a 20" box fan on the floor which seems to help as well.

80 freaking pounds? Holy hell that's a beast. What's the weight capacity of the tent ceiling? I know with Gorilla it's several hundred pounds, but not familiar with the strength of yours.

I can definitely see why you haven't done anything with it yet! 2" PVC, maybe?

I wonder if the opposite would work? Passive intakes at the top, drawing down through the canopy? Just thinking out loud. :D

Light saturation is definitely a real thing. That's why you see grows that get into supplementing CO2. Plants can then take a little more light, and then they can grow a little more. Of course you then add the expense of a CO2 system, and if you're turning over the air volume fast enough, where is all that extra CO2 going? All about balance, me thinks. :D

Anyway, really enjoying following along, and looking forward to the next update! :ganjamon::thumb:

Yeah, just can't do everything. I walked into a CO2 filled tent once and almost choked to death. Not sure I'll ever implement any CO2...though I never say never. It just seems like a lot of hassle. If it doubled the harvest that's different but people I know who have added it and done it rather well tell me it adds 10% or a little more. Meh.

Thanks for being here. Getting exciting now and I love sharing it.

Just wanted to add I use 2 passive intake openings, one floor, one ceiling, so we get multiple cool air intake streams.

Remember Ghostbusters: DON'T cross the streams!

Hey @Hyena Merica
Beautiful setup and lovely groups of plants you have!

10x10 tents provide some awesome growing space that I’m jealous of haha

WW and BB tent is looking phenomenal with some serious stacking happening! Can’t wait to see how they finish off

How do you get to the middle of your scrog in that room to defoliate? Seems like quite the stretch lol

Heya HM!

Grab a dehumidifier with a drain line pump, run the drain line, set it to your desired range, sleep better. You can pick up some really nice units for under $200.

Can’t wait for you to bust out that PAR meter, will you do a PAR map of your tents to confirm the 50% vs 100% feels?

Loving the journal as always my man!

I don't. And it is.

I have been literally reaching as far as I can, from both sides, hundreds of leaves per session...

Until my back gives out. I feel like a giraffe.

Thanks for being there, big finish soon!

Peace, Hyena

GOSH, how time flies! Is it Sunday already? Here's a slightly tardy

HYENA'S GROW HOUSE update!

Rolled up to the GH Friday morning...

Every time I open the tent it takes my breath away! The 4-day average interval between views really makes the growth rate apparent.

The density continues to amaze me....

It's fascinating to watch this hedge of buds swell and develop into a frosty forest of fun.

And the endless colas...

They are making my mouth water!

So we have been through a slightly milder past three weeks and the temperature and humidity have been reasonable. Now starting today and for the next week or so we will have another spell of hot weather (90-plus) and humidity is a slight concern. I spent over an hour defoliating everywhere and didn't notice very much wetness within the canopy, only a few spots where there was even a drop between two leaves. The humidity is around 70% so I'm keeping serious air circulation in here and this major league defoliation should assist in boosting inter-canopy airflow.

I continue to notice gradual bleaching of the leaves on some plants but the effect is only happening on certain plants and not others...some of it I attribute to the light intensity, and some to the natural aging process of some varieties where the leaves yellow and lose function earlier than others. The taller Super Bud plants seem to be the ones doing it.

We will just continue to watch and learn. The differences in height, stretch, and coloration are more significant than I anticipated. It might benefit me to go to only two varieties for the Phase Three run to minimize these differences, especially final stretch/height. I have to drop the beans for the next run pretty much in the next few days since it's looking like these might actually finish reasonably close to the advertised time frame. Got to look in the Hyena Seed Vault and see what I have...

The buds of all three varieties are now showing their individuality...

It's late and I'm high and I don't remember which is which but they all are packing on weight and getting frosty.

I'm just blown away with the overall size of this biomass and I hope I can keep it problem-free for another few weeks and see just how far we can take this.

I'm having to lay a bunch of the taller branches over. They'll still pack it on but it lets more precious light into the interior.

Several weeks now with the lights on 50% power in Phase One...now I just noticed I have had all the lights in Phase Two on 50% since the beginning! Seriously, these Quantum boards are nothing but incredible. I never even imagined turning grow lights DOWN but I'm doing it and I see no end in sight, they just keep growing and growing.

Phase Two is seriously popping too.

Left side:

Right side:

This was the final SCROG session and I worked it for an hour, combining defoliation, weaving branches and supercropping those too tall to SCROG. The key is to get most of it to one level and now we will watch it go UP! It looked like this in the end...

Now so much to do...I have to decide what to grow next, drop those beans, recondition the grow lab within a week, and build the drying room which I have been putting off as long as I dare. Then prepare for the amazing task ahead, where I will single-handedly cut, wet trim, and hang every branch and bud. Myself.

Probably two full days of work I reckon...

Don't feel sorry for me. :sorry: Okay, I know you don't.

Anyway, gettin' close to the payoff. Stay tuned!

Peace, Hyena

Hyena, even ol Edward Scissorhands is going to feel sorry for your upcoming trim load.:yummy:

Time to buy a trimmer lol! It would be well worth the $

I have a Trimbag which should be a good finishing "polish" trim but I am not a big fan (yet) of machine wet trimming, most tools seem to take about as much work as a good old fashioned hold-and-snip trim plus a lot of material is removed that I prefer to keep.

We will see if my arm holds up.

Peace, Hyena

Wowser, it's already Thursday! How about another

HYENA'S GROW HOUSE update!

This meme may have been modified slightly from its original form. But I wanted to open with a joke because now it's going to get serious.

As humbly and lovably as I can say it, there is about to be a new sheriff in town.

:yummy:

OMG. Yes, it's finally hitting me: this is happening and it's happening BIG. The size of the canopy and especially the ridiculous density hasn't hurt the individual bud formation one bit that I can tell. Everyone looks like they are in a race to glory. Bud size in general is getting very, very good everywhere, with nice firmness among most.

The evolution of each variety is markedly different by this point, even differences between phenotypes of the same varieties, but they all have one thing in common: they are POPPING!

Left side:

The White Widow never got tall enough for my liking but is nugging up fantastically.

All four WW plants are homogenous and productive. I'm still thinking they have a week or two to plump though.

Next, the Bud Bud Bling Tings variety has stretched more than the Widow, actually there are two or maybe even three phenos represented among my four plants, they look different enough and also the differences in how they are aging and their leaf coloration tell me they are actually 3 separate versions of the variety. Here's the taller and earlier-yellowing one in the back:

In general the buds are not yet as firm as the WW or the Super Bud but the plants seem to be packing on weight so I'll let them go at least another couple weeks I would guess. Bud close up:

The plant in the front right is supposed to be a BBBT but I don't think it's even the same variety:

It has super-slender, very Sativa-looking leaves, is super short, and the buds are fruity and very fragrant but so far also smallish. Maybe a bean of another type bounced into the BBBT bin. Not much you could do if that happened...how would you even know? :hmmmm:

Finally, the star of the show so far is the Super Bud.

This plant stretched perfectly, handles being within inches of the Quantum boards without any apparent ill effect, and is producing the most buds and the densest buds of anything.

Yes, this variety is exceeding even my best expectations and I'm glad I have it growing in Phase Two as well.

The density of this canopy seems impossible...

I spent another 40 minutes pinching off as many as several hundred fan leaves with the goal of opening up more lumens to the many intermediate-level buds trying to grow in the massive middle. I think I was successful, though as I stood back it seemed like I hardly made a dent. I guess it's even more amazing that all lights are dialed back to 50% in both tents. I can't get over that. 50%, my God this is also going to be amazingly affordable, well beyond my best expectations. You all should buy these Quantum boards!

A third (probably) pheno of the Bud Bud Bling Tings is a foxtailing variant, all the buds are doing this:

Even though overall the plant won't be the highest producer, they look delicious

Meanwhile, in Phase Two we see things aren't exactly slacking either!

Left side:

Right:

I won't go into a lot of detail about this side this time, suffice to say another 60 minutes of leaf removal revealed a nice canopy which has filled in everywhere and is all ready to rise. I will probably flip this grow in another week i would say.

So as I buttoned everything up, I snipped a bud of each variety in the bud tent of dreams.

These three buds are all primo, the stickiness is glue-like and the aroma of each is amazing. My first harvest! We will see in a week what we have. Can't freaking wait!

My emotions swell. Soon, so soon. I see my dreams beginning to come true...

Patience. (Deep breath) Still a long way to the finish. (Rolls a joint) Got to stay focused. (Lights joint, inhales)

Ahhhhhhh. Until next time.

Peace, Hyena

Highya HM,

Your Phase One tent is awesome! Huge colas, and many of them. A massive grow! Soon, Phase Two will look that! Looks like a bigger yield than your attic. Just massive! Congrats, man!! Cheers
