Hyena's Never-Ending Adventures In Growing

Thank You Hyena Merica, Mr. Merica! I finally finished both of your Journals, the knowledge I have gained...I feel a Diploma from Hyenas Grow Pages is almost necessary...I am now armed with years of experience/ knowledge to push forward into the unknown with vigour, and growth. I was wondering how to set up a semi automated system, I now have options with proven methods...soil will be a thing of the past soon?
Anyways thanks to you! and @multiVortex for the link to this here thread! I’m on my first grow now. The tops of my plants have just reached the scrog net, and I kind of feel I know what to do after watching/reading you scrog for the last few years: compressed into 1 month of reading your fabulous journals...while smoking piles of cannabis, and drinking copious quantities of caffeine.
Congratulations on the 5lb harvest! I might go buy some Terpinator on Monday? Also does your Wife know she’s Mrs. Merica? :passitleft:

Hey Lando thanks a lot!

I am most happy when someone says they were inspired by my writing/growing...because that's the reason I write here. To pass on the inspiration I received from others whose journals I read about five or six years ago! We learn nearly everything we know from others and I have been lucky enough to learn enough to be dangerous from all the great growers on the forums. And now adding more!

I wish you the best in your efforts and if you ever have a question don't hesitate to ask. I have always said, growing weed is easy...growing really great weed is hard. But not impossible! It just takes a bit of knowledge and a good dose of hard work! And patience...the most important thing is patience. Mother Nature does everything on her own sweet schedule and we mortals just go along for the ride.

A great ride! Stick around and keep us in the loop as your grow progresses! And thanks again for the kind words...makes all the late-night scrawling of these stories worthwhile when I hear it has inspired someone else. Thank you!

And yes, wifey just laughs about all my exploits and tales at this point. She thinks I'm just a silly stoner who won't grow up. And of course she is absolutely right. :ganjamon:

Peace, Hyena

I would like to grow some really good weed!!
First question is: When doing the “Scrog Tuck”, are you attaching the stem to the cotton? Or is it just a simple “tuck under” the string?
Thanks again for taking the time to share all your knowledge with us! It makes it even easier to get excited growing this wicked weed! Here’s to never growing up...:lot-o-toke:

Thant's an easy one...the scrog screen or net should be taut enough to keep everything pressing upward beneath it. Plants grow one way: up. So the goal is how much horizontal can be developed before everything gets vertical? Just keep bending and tucking until the scrog screen is as full as you can get it, then all the side-branching will become vertical shoots of approximately the same height with some skill. There's only so much time to scrog if your plants are vigorous, so be a bit aggressive with it and you can learn to develop a canopy that's more like a hedge.

It's so fun to grow cannabis!

Peace, Hyena

Sweet! Thank you Hyena! You make it sound easy...”how much horizontal can be developed before going vertical”. I am picking up, what you’re putting down! Brilliant man, A hedge is what I will “shoot” for. All my plants will hit the net within the day i’m sure: timing is everything.

Peace, Lando

Hello and welcome to another

HYENA'S GROW HOUSE update!

It was a routine run to the GH on Monday morning, I figured I would have at most an hour of work. It never turns out to be that way of course. First I checked in on the newly-planted clones...

Boy, they look pretty good to me! Obviously everyone is through the adjustment period and taking to their new environment with vigor.

Love it. Another cake in the oven, now just a matter of letting it bake. :high-five:

So on to Tent #1 with its now-three-weeks-in-flower girls...everyone looking soooooo sweet!

Great blossoming everywhere, just looking juicy. Of course that's what I expect but it's nice not to screw anything up.

The two varieties (INCREDIBLE BULK on the left, and DELHI FRIEND on the right) are quite different at this point.

Only the bud development seems the same...nice flowers everywhere and about the same rate of development on both varieties. They are both almost narcotic in their effects, so another similarity. The buds were VERY popular and every time I smoke the stuff I get hammered. That's the best part of course. But the strain names are lame at best...INCREDIBLE BULK is okay but could be better, and DELHI FRIEND isn't even fun to say. Who names a strain something that every time you say it people immediately ask, "What the hell is that?" Total miss so I renamed both strains.

Now they are MR. INCREDIBLE and SATURN 5. Those names were an instant hit and shall be official, at least for me, from now on.

So I had forgotten that I left 2 clones alive just in case a random death occurred but since everything is fine, I had to throw them out. No problem, except that means almost 2 hours' work to drain, break down and thoroughly clean and sanitize the entire cloning setup. There's that extra two hours I always seem to get hit with. It's a job.

After that I rolled home, to let everyone just grow in silent splendor for another week. Probably 7 weeks at most from another brutal harvest. I can wait...!

Back to smoking lots of tasty and mind-expanding cannabis chunks.

Hope your world is good and your mind is high.

Peace, Hyena

How the hell did a week go by so fast?

It's time for another HYENA'S GROW HOUSE update!

Monday is always the same...each time in a different way. That statement makes sense only to stoners and people who grow weed. I always expect a certain amount of work when I do my weekly thing and it's always at least twice as much. You'd think I would learn, but I forget stuff... :ganjamon:

My blooming room in Tent #1 is now just under 4 weeks into 12/12 and the crop is getting very big and fat!

I'm amazed how fast this one is frosting up!

The two Indicas share many similarities but it's still easy to see who's who...

They seem to get along nicely. I love the ease of growing these. There are zero issues with nute sensitivity, no leaf tips I don't like, it's really amazing how great these two varieties have been. I'm a little sad I didn't keep both lines going for the next run but I'm doing all Mr. Incredible so this, sadly, will be the end of the road for the Saturn 5. I have thought about cloning anyway and re-vegging the clones, I don't know if that's even possible but I already decided to change it up for the run after next. Probably go with another Indica or mostly-Indica, I really like getting more back for my efforts compared to longer-flowering and lower-yielding Sativas.

So over to Tent #2 I went. 2 1/2 weeks into their veg life everybody seems in perfect health!

I'm also not completely ruling out that I might change my mind (again) and clone this run and do it yet again! It's just so cool to clone!

I have become enamored with cloning. Clones take SO much of the uncertainty (and work) out of this! They are all so green and full of life, it's awesome to already know exactly what you've got growing with no surprises, and to already have a total understanding of the time frame and what they will need from beginning to harvest. I never really realized how much you have to watch and respond to a variety the first time you run it until I ran clones. It was endless. Nute adjustments, leaf tips you don't like but have no idea what to do to fix, and especially differences in sensitivity between varieties, who share a common reservoir so somebody's never completely happy. But clones are perfect the whole way, no re-learning required, no wondering.

I love it.

So for another week I just dream of my plants, they living alone in their solitude, and I in mine. In love but separated for all but a few precious hours a week. We want to be together but we know it's wrong. However, we're adults, we can wait for our time together because we know it will be hot! I smoke a joint, gaze at the stars, and think of them...

Ahhhh, love. Until next week,

Peace, Hyena

Looking for a sativa that’s potent, a great buzz, good yield, and shorter flowering time?

I’ve run Dutch Passion’s Durban Poison twice now. It’s excellent. Heavy yield, 8 weeks flowering, and nice, dense nugs. Excellent buzz.

Barney’s Liberty Haze might be another one. 60-65 days, good yield, 60% sativa and I’d a cross of G13 and a fast flowering Chemdog 91. I just cracked a seed of this, and looking forward to it.

Great choices.

I have grown both of those varieties in previous grows in this very journal, back in the attic days. Loved them both. But, I wasn't nearly the grower then that I have learned to be now so both are worthy suggestions.

Amnesia Haze was the first hermie flower in my first attic lab grow, and became half the parentage of my Blue Hyena (Haze x Blue Dream), which had a great history for a few years. And still may rise again.

So many choices. So little time...

So why not a supplemental

HYENA'S GROW HOUSE update?

The next level.

When you reach the next level of something, especially the more difficult a thing it is, it's an amazing feeling. The more work and time excellence requires, the more satisfaction it delivers when the day finally comes. The day of deliverance. The day you worked for, studied for, prayed for. The day you know you made the next level.

Yesterday was one of those days. I finally opened the parchment and took a deep whiff of the most amazing fragrance: fresh, delicious, beautiful, killer HASH.

This is the best hash I have ever smoked. And I have smoked a lot. I had the good fortune over my 40 years plus as a stoner to have gotten my paws on a lot of hashish. The dark, really hard kind from Pakistan...the crumbly, but tasty medium-blonde stuff from Mexico...once I even got to unwrap the foil from a commercial 1 kilo plate of fragrant, Lebanese gold with its Arabic stamp embedded in the middle, an experience I still remember like it was yesterday.

All my life, great hashish has been around...but this time I made my own.

Using the highest-tech methods, from fresh-frozen ultra-dank buds, I extracted and refined the most potent and seductively-scented trichomes and created hash so refined, it's really closer to a dab...it bubbles and liquefies before transforming into an incredible vapor that's so delicious, it's like your nose is devouring a stack of ambrosia-scented pancakes. Think of the highest-quality rosin extract you have ever smelled, it smells that good. The smell is everything. Tells you exactly what you have. This stuff is insane. No cough. Incredible, cerebral high, we smoked about 3 good hits each and played pool for 90 minutes and nobody touched a joint or even their beer...we were hammered.

So this morning another test, I put some on top of a few of the same buds that it was extracted from...delicious is not close to a strong enough word. I never knew smoking a cannabis product could be this great. I am very likely to get immediately and hopelessly addicted to this and totally ruin my life...

And after another couple hits I'm thinking that's okay. Whoa. Really stoned.

Peace, Hyena

Highya HM,

I can't know how great your experience is, but I can tell you about one of mine. I grind my bud in a coffee grinder. Every once in a while, I scrape all the trichomes stuck against the outside walls. It makes me cough, but it is so powerful!! Way better than just smoking bud (which there's nothing wrong with, lol)! One of those little treats of a cannaseur!
Congratulations on your gorgeous looking hash!! Happy Smokin'

Question for ya Sir? Of the 2 moisture/ nutrient delivery systems: Dutch Buckets, Ebb and Flow. Is there one you prefer over the other? Ebb and flow seem better to maximize the height? Is it a Class 5 system you have? Not to far in the distant future, I plan on setting something similar up...in that you can leave it unattended for a few days. Also with the 6 bucket set-up, one could only do 4, or 5 plants if one chooses? Or up to 12 like you have growing over there. I’m thinking 4 hydro whoppers, in a 5x8 with 2x 600 watt MH/HPS...or something like that? Is that hash a cold water extraction? I can’t get that picture of it outta my head, it looks the business.

Both systems are great, I used to love the Dutch bucket system but now I love the ebb and flow even more. You are right, maximizing vertical space makes the ebb and flow better. The key to loving this system is get the plumbing tight from the start. Four floods a day for 15 minutes a pop. But none outside the buckets! Mine is a Class 5 system, it's excellent, nothing anyone couldn't build from scratch, but having all the push fittings and drill holes already correctly sized is nice and it's certainly worth the cost to get the whole kit. You can do any number of plants, I'd maybe even do a couple more than 12 if there wasn't other considerations in the state where I grow.

The hash is a cold water extraction with dry ice and a very expensive commercial machine, I didn't buy it I'm using it at a production facility. We also then pressed a bunch of live rosin from the hash and it's curing...incredible. Looks like liquid gold! Yes, the hash is everything you could imagine, times two plus 10. :p

Peace, Hyena

I picked up one of the bubble dude machines a couple months ago. Way better than the bucket and drill I’d been using. Machine is awesome.

Hello America and the World!

It's just a HYENA'S GROW HOUSE update!

Well, I doubt America or the World is reading this but since you are, here's the update on things in the secret grow house...

Monday's routine visit was, well, routine. The fourth week of flowering has turned tent #1 into a fairyland of furry friends!

Yes it's as perfect as it looks.

Every flower seems to smile in the artificial sunlight that illuminates their world...every blossom so delicate and fragrant...

Getting the expected results because, wow, I just grew the other parts of this same plant! Cloning is so cool. I just think it's such a kick to already know everything that's going to happen. I'm used to watching and interpreting stuff every week but when you know what you have already it's like half the work.

So that's all on pace to kill me with another brutal harvest in a month or so. Oh joy.

Meanwhile, in Tent #2, the clones of the clones are popping!

Damn, these girls are going vertical right now! The difference of one week's growth once they take off is stunning. The cannabis plant in an ideal environment continues to impress!

At this point I top everyone and then pull the 5-6 main fan leaves which block the light to the important lower branches.

Then it's time to drop the scrog frame! Always a cool moment which marks the next phase, three weeks of going horizontal and filling the space.

I supercrop the main stems to keep everything on an even level from the beginning. It has taken many grows to fully understand the best techniques and timing to maximize the square footage of the canopy before it all starts to rise. I think it makes a big difference in the final yield. And you only have a window of a few weeks to accomplish it. This room is now set to explode.

So it's all zipped up. And another week to grow in silent splendor. On the drive home I couldn't help but think about how much I love weed.

A whole lot. Have a green week!

Peace, Hyena
