How To Make Concentrated Cannabis Oil

Hi all,

An extremely busy a.m. and afternoon. Will be back this late afternoon/evening. Got many great peeps ready to help out.
Peace

Kickapoo Doc, I thought your post was very interesting.
My wife is Apache & Kickapoo. Her Kickapoo family were reported to be amongst the last native Americans to finally agree to a reservation. There were a lot who did not adopt European customs. They're pretty proud of that still.

Hi Everyone,

I have read this journal from the beginning and it has inspired me to make this oil and hopefully get my health back on track. I recently have purchased everything to start my first grow, but decided that I couldn't wait the 3-4 months for harvest to make the oil. This weekend I went and purchased 1 oz. of Cannatonic, 1 oz. of Fire OG, 1/2 oz. of Blue Dream, 1/2 oz. of Green Crack and 1/2 oz. of Blue Cookies. I also bought 1.75 ltr of EverClear 95% and have a rice cooker, electric hot pot (with digital thermometer) and all of the other supplies mentioned. Everything is sitting in my freezer waiting for me to make a move.

Since I have autoimmune problems and major pain issues, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to mix the high CBD with Sativa on a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio. I also don't know if I should mix the Blue Dream with Green Crack or the Fire OG with Blue Cookies to get a more diverse combination or if it would be better to make a smaller batch using just one strain at a time. Based on what I have available, what strains should I use in what combination/qty? Thanks for your time.

Hi C Sprite

I know you already got responses from the real experts, but I'd like to put this thought out there. Personally, if I can, I prefer to make single strain oils. You can always mix together the oils after extraction, but you can't "unmix" the oils if you combine the flower.

Good luck! You have some great support here. :Namaste:

I did it! Oh yes, I did it! I made my nighttime oil and I think it turned out perfect. I think I had said that I had an oz. of Fire OG, but it really is Venom OG. I don't know why I thought it was Fire OG. Anyway, I was able to pull up 2.5 ml in the oral syringe and got another solid 1 ml when I scraped up the remainder of what was in the ss measuring cup that I couldn't pull into the syringe. So, I think for my 1st time getting at least 3.5 ml from 1 oz. is pretty good.

I was going to get my daytime oil done today too, but a couple of friends came by and we smoked :blunt: so now I just feel like eating dinner and relaxing. I will get 'er done tomorrow!

To Hiker...good advice. Thanks.

Thank you again Motoco for all your advice today.

Great job C Sprite! Excellent job for your first go around! Really is easy, huh, lol. Gets better each time as techniques improve. For the first time though you should be very proud of your pull of 3.5 grams. :bravo::goodjob::high-five: and 'thank you'.

i know nothing about making oil. my buddy gets the trim. he uses 190 booze to leach his oil. he is after the cbds. i have never tried any. he offers me a cap all the time, and smile and shake my head. i took a blast off a oil rig ounce. and i went down to one knee, and, i forgot where i was . i was BLOWN. mr nice oil, as i remember.

Black goo is correct...more like 'shoe polish'. Unless your planning on winterizing to refine your product, its not ideal to use correctly for proper healing.

You can just put buds in 96% or stronger alcohol and after month let it evaporate leaving the black goo in jar.

Hey Motoco and others, something I wanted to mention that I recently discovered. I bought some of those fridge freezer thermometers recently as our fridge froze up. Put one in the freezer and it was at around 10 degrees. I turned it up to about -5f to compensate from me having the top open as I make my oil in a chest freezer, filtering as well. Made a 2:1 THC/CBD run last night from 25 grams and pulled 3.84 grams of a much cleaner looking oil. Fully decarbed and still nice and amber with some transparency. It tacks slightly better as well. Just passing it forward, check those freezers!

The bubbles are there because I was squeezing the container.

Hi Smokes.
Thanks for the insight. Your the second person I heard (I think) that does this in the freezer. Scratch that, I think it was Hiker and he just did it outside in some cold weather :). Your starting to turn out some good oil Brother! I know there are many methods and sometimes a lot of choices doesn't make it better. Same with growing. Master one way before going to the next (if you need to). Certain strains have their own characteristics pertaining to the color of the oil. On the norm CBD strains will have the reddish/amber tone to it. Also flowers with a lot of 'red hairs' have an reddish amber tone. I did a run of Gorilla Glue #4 and it looked like honey oil. The white strains are more translucent. You got a new hobby my friend! You really don't need to do the filtering in the freezer if you don't want to unless you get a lot of sediment in your filters. I just use a small skimmer to remove those so they just don't sit while the slow process of filtering goes forward. The most important part of making oil in my mind is the 'quick wash'. Master that technique and your oil is always consistent.

Really nice job Brother! There is so much more to making a clean run of oil. It gives you so much more confidence in your product and that does wonders in the 'healing' department. Instead of it being a burden making oil, it becomes a hobby. Now if I can just get Mo to wash the equipment :high-five:
ps the tiny bubbles can also mean it wasn't quite fully decarbed. Next time when checking the decarb towards the end, get a flashlight, put the light on the top of the oil. If you see any little 'tits' like they want to come to the surface it is not quite fully decarbed but very close. I use to stir my oil right after the decarb to blend the bottom with the top and thought movement is ok. I notice also tiny bubbles. I found out when the decarb is complete, it doesn't bubble or a much more minute amount. Warming it back up to about 110 F for a little while (10 minutes or so) will dissipate the bubbles also if it bothers you. Nothing wrong with the potency to be sure and you only had about 10 more minutes to a full decarb depending on your method.

:goodjob::Namaste:

Hi folks/420 oil crew,

I'm doing a small harvest today and will be mostly off-line. Plenty of 420 Members to help/point in the right direction if someone needs it. If an emergency the 'oil crew' knows my door bell. Have a great day, Mo and I love you guys for all the help you do! It gets better and better doesn't it? Just gotta love the concentrate.

:peace::circle-of-love: and Happiness :high-five:

Now you know why I reclaim it. I really could probably make this blind folded now. I bought a little pump for my reclaim unit so now I just fill a bucket with ice and water and sit back. Ever since I started putting my buds in the oven prior, I do get much more sediment but it overall makes the process much smoother for me. Besides it's not a big deal to just shut the door and let it do it's thing, at least no dust gets in there. :)

The cool thing is that was actually two washes that took me about 10 minutes to finish. And I really don't clean my gear either. Just seal everything up and the jars go back to the freezer for the next.

That is why I stated the bubbles were from squeezing it, it's for sure decarbed. I can feel a pleasant little perk with this one, don't last long but hey. I did tap into my special stash though and pulled out some long time curing Colombian Gold. She's a racy one even with decent ambers. Sometimes my product can come out solid so I squeeze it to see if it will seperate but this one did not. If it is questionable, like you, I stir it with a toothpick. That's why I asked you a bit back if you stirred yours or not. You can tell if the reaction happens immediately when attempting to stir, the decarb is not finished. I use the flashlight on my phone and constantly check it, always have. OCD to thank there, it has to be right. Part of the reason I due the methods below is because for some reason decarbing will take forever for me if not, several hours and I will still see activity. Probably my method though as I did not have to buy anything more to make this, already had a fondue pot and I do my reclaim and decarb in it. I did buy a HF laser thermometer special and while the oil outside of the decarb bowl will register up to 250, the inside does not.

What I do is turn the oven on warm, after the flame turns off I shut the oven off and put my buds in for several hours before the deep freeze. I put the buds in I think a 16oz (only goes to 10 on side) wide mouth jar, poor in the carrier and lid it. As soon as I start shaking it the buds break up real nice all on there own. Strain the liquid using the lid to hold back the material and repeat. I have found that my typical 30 gram runs fit just about perfectly in there with just enough head room for the carrier. Breaks down to maybe half a jar for the second wash. I think I use about 600ml of carrier for two washes, sometimes less depending on density. I cheesecloth it first to get a large chunk of the debri, then lately I have been using a stainless potato ricer to squeeze what I can out before finally being coffee filtered. I place the then spent greens in a quart mason jar covered with water and after I accumulate enough, I press and reclaim it for that little extra, been working like a charm. :)

About those hairs changing the oil color. When I trim for harvest I will hold my branch upside down as if you were hanging it. I then like to take the blunt end of my scissors and violently hit the stem multiple times. This knocks off a large portion of the extra hairs and leftover stuck trim. Thankfully the wife likes trimming and trims pretty tight for me, always leaving me with real clean buds and a paper bag of sugar trim. I found this out because my Blue OG was extremely hairy, could also be because I took her at peak THC though.

Thank you cajuncelt!

Hey Smokes, you don't use coffee filters for the final filtering? Much cleaner product. I trim my flowers that clean also, but you cannot get all the hairs out :). Nice right up! I like the mash and stir as it breaks the flowers up to get those precious trich's lol. Whatever works brother.

Have a great day compadre!
