HID Grow - Revenge of the Kittens

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

Yo Crimson...nice looking plants/setup going. I am in the same boat as you are with your pride and joy flipping on ya. To me, Zena is undeniable male. At the very least hermie. Those little flowers are textbook male. The queen of our fleet Daisy is looking like a Donald with some of the same characteristics. We are going to collect some pollen from him and fertilize some of our Widows and see how it turns out..even though D/D came from the free seeds Nirvana sends, but is a vigorous, sturdy sweet looking plant. Never can tell. Anyhow, keep doing what you are doing cause it looks like it is working.

yeah I thought I saw a few hairs a while ago, but they're just developing into balls so It's pretty much a lost cause. I'll probably give him the chop in the next few days.. It will be a sad time, but everyone has to go sometime.

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

Yeah man I know what you mean. I was almost 100% positive that Daisy was a girl. I am no pro, but I would've sworn they were hairs. Then the calyx started growing a textbook male flower. I won't be jumping to premature declarations in the future. Oh well, like I said earlier we will try to pass on some of his fine-looking growth characteristics to our white widow females.

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

That last one is definitely a boy and looks like good breeding stock!

:peace:

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

Well, Zena got the chop last night. It's always hard cutting males that are growing so nicely. I wish I could put it outside in the garden just for a house plant lol. I'm not really ready to start breeding. I wouldn't want to ruin a good crop of ladies in some way.

I have 5 left. The two tallest are 13" and got a dose of nutes at half strength, which is about full strength big bloom. They also got sprayed with just plain distilled water for a little bath. This morning they looked like the loved it as they were so green and reaching out, basking in the light. They're growing up really fast. It will be nice to see the size of them when the smaller two are a foot. Even the lone seed I started a week after the first two is catching up to the others really quickly. and is almost 12". The two smallest ones are really doing well. It seemed like the one grew 2" yesterday alone after being hit with nutes. I always tell my girlfriend I was mixing magic potions for the plants when she asks how they're doing.

Tonight I'm hitting them with plain water and they will get fed again on the weekend. I've had no bad luck using nutes yet. Maybe my thumb is pretty green after all.

We hit a nice bong of some Purple Kush, and I found another seed. I'm definitely going to grow these seeds next round, as I have about 5 of them right now. It would be awesome to raise a nice healthy mother. This weed is great in every aspect. I think I'll start a couple of them the last 2 weeks before harvest, that way they can get some decent HPS at least 12 hrs and then I'll throw the seedlings under CFL's for the other 12 hours. Then when I harvest I can just swap in the MH and give them 18/6 and watch them turn into kush bushes

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

Yo Crimson....man that is sad about Zena. We are in the same boat with Daisy (now renamed Donald). He was the pride of our grow and has been excommunicated from the grow room. We are going to raise him in an isolated spot to harvest some pollen to breed with Lucille (one of our widows). I want to see if we can get that beautiful, vibrant green, huge-leaved growth trait passed on to the widow traits. It will be my first attempt at breeding and should at least be fun. Sorry about your loss....hope no of the others turn out to be dudes.

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

thanks for the kind words hypo. I can't wait to start flowering and see some females.. It's been far too long since I had any flowering plants. The smaller ones are growing up really fast.. I have about 5 inches to go, so about a week left until I switch the bulb. I did notice something today in the grow room.. One of the 13"ers is developing 10 bladed fan leaves. I know it's not really uncommon, but it's my first encounter with them. My last grow only had 7 blades, and I had a poor growing environment, so it's great to see such an improvement.

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

Yeah, Donald has 12-bladed leaves and looks badass! The only problem with those leaves is that they almost totally blot out the light to the leaves and branches under them. Stout looking plant though...I was really hoping he was a girl. (that sounds weird doesn't it? lol)

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

Not much to say right now.. They're growing at the same steady rate and are doing great. I'll let the pics do the talking.

The tallest are at 16" and the smallest is 7". When the smallest is 12" I'm going to start flowering.

How do the tops look to you guys on the bigger ones? It looks like heat stress or something, but the light is like 16" from the tops and the temps aren't that bad.

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

Looking good....They don't look burned....are tops of all plants same height or are two tall ones closer to light...cause it could be light bleaching. Temps at pot level where you have temp gauge is a lot different than at canopy level ....I know this cause i stressed out a plant going by temp at pot level instead of by canopy temps...which for me were 10 degrees hotter. Jack up light a bit see if it sorts it out...Over all they look healthy ...it is just tall tops like you said that look funny :peace:

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

I'm thinking it was a moisture related issue and the plants were drying out most likely for two reasons.. First, like you said Tunes, the light is closer to those two plants.. The bulb is about 14-16" away from those tops, and the other tops are probably 3-6 inches lower than the tallest tops. Also, I had my fan running 24/7 on the plants, and my humidity has been really low, around 25-35%, so I'm thinking they were just drying out a bit..

I had a bit of a scare yesterday morning as I went down to check on them before work and the two tallest were very wilted and looked horrible.. I had a feeling the droopiness was from being under watered, as they looked the same as they did before when they were dry. The one plant is very sensitive to not having water. If it's dry for a couple of hours it starts to wilt and fall over.

Anyway, I hit them with a dose of nutes after I saw them in such horrible shape, and within 2-3 hours they were looking amazing again, and the growth exploded all over. So, I'm definitely learning a lot more with this grow that I did with the last. Using good soil and a HID really makes a difference in how the plants grow. They grow so much faster that problems arise and go away so much faster. Adding nutes is a must because they grow so much faster and healthier.

I plan on switching to 12/12 and using the HPS this Saturday. I'm hoping the smallest will be big enough.. It's at 7.5" now, so given the usual inch a day growth, it should be around 10-11" which is fine since the others will be close to 20". I'm trying to not have monsters by the time I'm done.. As it is, I can't raise my light any more with the hangers I have.. I have to re-mount the light on the hangers to make better use of the space, and then extend the brace that it hangs from so it's higher and I'll be fine then.

General question about feeding.. In the first week or so of flower, do you guys give any additional Nitrogen to them, or just straight bloom nutes? I'm debating if I should mix up a batch of each, or just go straight to the bloom nutes.

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

I snapped these pics this morning on my cell.. Sorry for the poor quality, but I love how bushy they are getting, and since the feeding, they look like monsters!

This is the two biggest ones a month ago on 2/9 (minus the big one which was the male and is dead now)

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

Crimson....looking good my man. It is uncanny how close your grow looks to ours. I had to go back once looking at your pics and make sure I wasn't looking at my journal. Nicely done

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

Thanks dude! This is only my second actual grow, but I couldn't have gotten to this point without the help on these forums. It definitely helps the learning curve.

I'm excited to have stinky flowering plants again.

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

Here are some more cell pics.. Let me know what you guys think the problem is.. My second smallest plant is showing this, and it seems to be slowly spreading across the older fan leaves.. The leaves are old, but not old enough to come off yet.

I think I'm going to flower on Saturday, so I'm not sure if I want to give them any more veg nutes.. I gave them a little flushing this morning with plain distilled water.. I was going to just give them plain water until the day or 2 after they go to 12/12. If anyone could give some insight on nute schedules when switching the times, it would be greatly appreciated.

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

That is what our early grows are all about isnt it amigo, to make mistakes, f**k things up, tread on them, let the cats get at them etc etc. It s acommon philosophy that second grows are alllways better than the first no matter how well prepared you think you are.
