Hempy Headquarters

Wow!, Thanks, now I do believe I'm sold on this technique. You are right, why would I want to go back to soil. Everything about Hempy seems to reduce to the simplest of ideas. I have a Veg/Clone Tote I recently created from an extra large Tote, and would like to do initial Veg in the smaller containers in it while my tent is finishing off a flowering session. The small Solo Cups would be just about the perfect size for I think a month after putting the Root Riot Sponge Clone in. I invite you to checkout my thread on my Clone Box and my first cloning attempt which has gone very successfully so far.

Oooo..... Nice and stealthy. I'll tell ya BTz, it doesn't get any easier than hempy. My garden started in this direction because I figured in small containers I'd be able to fit more in the small tents. Lol! In the end, they grew so beautifully that I ended up with one plant per 2x2, pulling close to 3 oz per, at this time.

Thanks for such a nice and quick answer. I was trying to imagine the concept or idea of transplanting from the smaller Hempy Solo Cups to a larger Hempy pot and though I could see a couple of ways of cutting the cup, disturbing the roots that had already gotten to the bottom seemed like an issue to be dealt with. My brother recently brought this technique to my attention and I see great merit in the Hempy direction. Thanks, BTz

Plug hole with finger. Overfill with water until the baby looks loose. Dump her out over her new home spilling the old perlite into the new container along with the roots and the plant. Tuck new roots into a hole in the new pot. Fill in with perlite. Water in well. Move on with life.
It's so simple. Once you do it once, you'll just laugh a little at the ease.

Sorry it's taken so long for me to reply I'm doing all this on my iphone 5 and I'm long winded when I type. Ok let me see if I can get it all out.

Do you find you get a noticably stronger terpene expression with this method of layering raziel? I find I get different expressions in the HB soil than I do in the hempies but not enough difference with most of the chemovars I grow to matter to me. I usually grow them all in both mediums. They're potent in either mix.

Hey Sue thanks for your replies and questions,

I'm a maverick, I started in DWC moved to RDWC researched the undercurrent system and made a modified bio undercurrent system. loved the way hydro grew but it was too work intensive. The bio-undercurrent system was great once everything was setup I didn't have all the concerns that come with regular active hydro systems. Had a fire at the house, not due to my setups, firemen told the Leos who then told me to knock off my grows, (only had 2 seedlings going at the time), live in the gateway to the west. whew that was 2 yrs ago took some time off did some researched for a simpler system. I wanted something that would give results like hydro but not all the fuss I came across Hempy, I liked what I read but was concerned about the terpene profiles it would produce, so....

I said why can't you use soil for the added benefits that bio provides, there was "NO" hempy headquarters around back then when I was going all the research so I said why not try it anyway so I did. this was back in '16 fast forward to today and I'll try to get everything answered before my eyes and fingers revolt.

Never tried straight perlite or coco, I've always layered like this from the beginning, I believe I was trying to recreate a bio - undercurrent system that was "passive" like the hempy buckets. Like you, I find that they're as potent and the yield have been the same in all the systems that I've used so far.

hmmm.... 5gal bucket with layers.... interesting.
Are you feeding this configuration any nutrient mix or are they getting everything from the soil?
Can you form a comparison of the grows (standard perlite vs soil layering) and share those words with us?
What was your nutrient regime in perlite only?

Sorry for all the queries... it's new to me so I gotta poke at it forever and form my own ideas to see if I wanna jump in.

Hey Tead, no problem, feedback and general convo is always welcomed thanks for dropping me a line,

Alot of what you asked about I think I answered when I answered Sue, but here's the rest. "OLD" GH Flora series 3 part, open sesame, beastie bloom, cha ching, cal/mag (cause I'm a led man), just the standard hydro nutrients. And I said old because this was the stuff that survived the fire.

My girls are getting food from both sources, soil when the roots are young and haven't yet hit the rez and both after they do. What I think is that the soil also acts as a buffer and provides bio action in the mix, I don't have any scientific proof that this is happening other than the fact that I don't have to Ph or ppm check my pre-water or runoff more than once at the beginning of a grow. I pretty much just follow the instructions for each stage of my grows.

There are pic's under the link that says current grow in my sig at the bottom, that shows my hempy setup and the other link shows the bio-undercurrent system I had before the fire.

I have 2 girls going now in my Hempy setup, Barney farms Acapulco Gold, and World of Seeds Afghan Kush, they are two weeks post 12/12 flip. My kush is standing tall at 52" and my gold comes in at 44" but I fluxed her. Hopefully they have past their stretch cause kush is about 8" from my lights and they're at the top of the tent already.

Hope this helps.

Fun stuff baby!
Are bugs a challenge in your world? The elimination of soil in my world made a huge difference... thus my attraction to neutral mediums.

My tweak on the hempy buckets is the Osmocote+ nutrient regime. It's just super attractive to the lazy grower. No nutes... just Osmo prills. Of course, I suffer the drawback of not being able to adjust the nutes during the grow... but even a lazy grower can limp over that hurdle.

I've seen a few folks try to mix soil and a neutral medium in hempy buckets over the years. To this point, I'd not witnessed a working configuration in that department. Great to see.

One of the drawbacks of the perlite gardener.... left over perlite after the grow. One can recycle... but then there's that lazy grower issue again. I've been dumping it into my outdoor raised garden area. Looks like snow, so is TOTALLY out of place in NOLA, but it sure keeps the snails away!

Thank the universe no Tead I had problems with nats on my first dwc grow because I took some outside soil baby's that my brothers wife wouldn't let him keep that I converted over to DWC.
But another reason I did layering the way I did was because I was trying to mimic the earths crust, you know. Top soil, sub soil, rocks then the water table. I don't know if that was really successful but I figured that my seedlings needed to have a source of food until their roots established themselves and grew old enough to be chemical fed and reached the rez.
The only thing about using the five gal bucket that I forgot is with the added room the bigger the girls could grow above the soil too.
My first grow with store brought seeds in dwc was with arjan haze that totally overwhelmed me when she went into her stretch, which prompted me to try fluxing to control my Acapulco gold height this time around but I forgot about making her pot size smaller too. But I'm learning and as long as I can grow my own medicine it's all good.

Hello hempy growers! Its been a little bit since I've been on and I'm still fumbling my way around the new site.
I'm finishing up a run of GSC clones and then i will be switching to a new set-up. I have to downgrade my area for security reasons so i went from a 2x4x6 to a 2x3x5 and now to a 2x2x4. Sigh. Its a nice tent but its too short to run my dwarf star in so i bought a cool tube for my ballast and i will be running my HID at 50%. 200w in a 2x2 gives me a decent amount of light. I also rigged up an auto-watering system from some bits and bobs i had laying around.
I have a Stardawg auto from fast buds in a mini-hempy to start and it has its 2nd set of tiny leaves growing. I will post pics of the new set-up when I'm home and have it all up and running. Keep it green everyone...

Ah yes... you sing the grower's tune.... never 'nuff room.
I like your thought style regarding the crust thoughts. Not sure following an "earth's crust" model in a bucket is actually accurate, but I can certainly see how the configuration could work... and in fact, I've been a large sideline supporter of folks mixing the mediums because it seems like it could be wonderful... but none of those other growers really made it over the goal line.

Fun to watch baby!

Love the cooltube. Mine's burning at 1000w and is completely cool to the touch. Very little heat from the fixture at all. Of course, radiant heat is the larger issue really.... and at 1000w Tead needs him some AC.

I'm curious about the plant laying over on it's side. Is it out of the PVC container? It it the Perlite being held together by the roots?

Yup... to all. It takes a month sitting out in the weather to break the rootball down enough to move the remnants on to the fire pit.
I'm sure I have some old photos of roots hanging around.....

There are more.... I got bored.

Quick question, I think I read some where that once the tap root hits the bottom of your pot it stops seeking the water table and then starts sending out feeder roots in all directions seeking food and water. If that is true does it restarts its downward search once it's repotted to a larger home?

I have a novel way of getting rid of my left over roots and remaining stalks. My dog loves playing fetch with sticks. Well once I threw a stalk and instead of him bringing it back to me he started throwing it up in the air and eventually shredded it up all over the yard. Now, I just let them dry out, remove the perlite and coco coir and he finishes the disposal process.

I can draw. It's Sue taking Carnival for a stroll. :)

I wonder if this could be bottled and sold like the pet rocks and the invisible dog leash of the seventies? Lol

Repurposed plant material. That appeals to my frugal nature. Lol! You're growing fire in those buckets raziel. :high-five: If I had all the materials on hand I'd have set one up like that. :battingeyelashes:

I love a versitle method. I like offering options.

Oh! I forgot why I stopped. Another happy hempy harvest. :bongrip:

Next one I'll hit three ounces. :cheesygrinsmiley:

My problem with your technique is I live in San Diego. We only have basically one type of weather year round with very rare rain in Jan-Mar. So, I'm thinking when I get to this stage a good soak perhaps and then hopefully a gentle shake to loosen and drop it off. Thanks for your reply, just gathering info in advance of starting a process to be prepared for all steps as best I can.

SweetSue, I have just begun a new journal called Early Clone Sexing in Hempy Cups. I hope you will give it a visit and any suggestions would be graciously accepted from a very new member here. But I will say you are largely an influence to the Hempy Cup idea and also transferring it into a larger bucket.

Your thought train has missed the station baby!
You actually want it all to dry out. Your weather seems perfect.
Dry it, dump it, move on with life. Mine sit in the garden forever. Sometimes they dry, mostly they rot.... whatever. Eventually the rootballs make it to the firepit and finish their current cycle of life.

You are right, I was thinking it needed rain to break it down. Good to know, thanks.

Boy I tell you, WOS said their Afghan kush wouldn't grow over 1.5m indoors but my girl is over that already and touching the LED's. I almost cut a foot off of her but I broke down and super cropped her instead. I haven't done this before this late in flowering and I hope she'll be alright. How late you might asks? Somewhere from fireworks to starting to becoming to look like buds.
