Hempy Headquarters

In all seriousness, the beauty of hempy is its passiveness. The design ensures plenty of air to the roots, especially if using 100% perlite, and adding fertilizer solution across the surface of the perlite, so that it pulls air in as it soaks in.

As long as you sieve/rinse the dust off of it, there shouldn’t be any issues with the perlite being in contact with the airstone.
Well here's my bucket. Since I'm not allowed to call it a "hempy bucket" i've decided to name it the "Blu Bucket" after my inspiration :p

Decided not to use hydroton. it's a 5 gallon bucket with about 4" of perlite on the bottom, and about 10inches of coco on top. the hole is about 3 1/2 inches up with a screen wired to the inside of the bucket over the hole.
Opted not the run the air tubes down the reservoir tube as i wanted a flat plastic lid to sit nicely on top to block any light. so just ran the air tubes down beside the reservoir tubes.

Wish me luck FB!

I can't wait to see how these turn out. Good luck. There is a lot of different variables in these buckets I have never tried. I am sure we all can learn something from these buckets. Keep us posted.

Thanks Buck, i'll keep it posted for sure. i'm very excited to grow in blu buckets. should i run the air stones before the roots hit the bottom?

Run them the whole time. Trying to judge when roots hit bottom seems like a waste of grower energy and will never be accurate from one grow to the next. If you start them from the beginning you can see comparative results. Apples to Apples my friend.

Naw but will keep it on my radar Doob. Anybody run just straight up #4 perlite? The bigger chunks? Been thinking about mixing it with some of the reg. perlite? Bottom or top anybody?
I ran the #8 last round and it worked okay but maybe stayed a bit to dry in the top half. I did some with #8 on the bottom and #2 on top and it seemed a lot better. They all yielded about the same.

I use these sizes not sure about the number

The left is mother earth and the right is vigoro from the Depot. I started using the bigger stuff in the bottom and smaller for the rest. It worked for me. I now reuse the stuff which is all mixed up and it works too. I never had an itch to have massive perlite so I couldn't speak on it. I just wanted it big enough not to run out the drain hole.

Thinking the number 4 on the bottom and the crap from the big box stores for the rest of the bucket.

i found the regular stuff to be the most cost effective locally. i get a 110 L bale for $27 CDN. it's so cheap we don't even bother to re-use, just work the old stuff into the garden instead.

the trick to getting it cheap was to buy it from a landscape and irrigation supplier, not a big box store or hydro shop.

That’s what I did until my house started to look like a winter wonderland, then I decided to try to reuse the perlite.

we have heavy clay soil. it's so hard it keeps breaking the roto-tiller. i have to replace $400 worth of gears next spring, we did it last year as well. outdoor gardeners spend years amending the soil to create good conditions. anything that breaks it up is good here.

‘Hempy Hybrid’ is acceptable.

I’m not sure of the benefit of the reservoir tubes. IMO, it’s actually a good thing to pour the fertilizer solution over the surface of the perlite so that it pulls air in behind it. You may also find that fertilizer salts start building up without periodic “rinsing”.

I was thinking the tube will be good for mid to late flower when they're drinking a lot. the second feeding of the day would be top feed then flush the reservoir. it's definitely not gonna be used as only a bypass to the medium. hopefully it pays off.

So a few tests done

1.... 7gal bucket
2.... #4 Perlite

My 7gal bucket conversion wasn't so good..it leaked. I can't say it was any better than a 5gal bucket.
Pretty sure the leaking contributed to my over drying out on my 8 day trip

#4 Perlite I do like. I agree as some mentioned a mix of it and the smaller I think is ideal

Next grow I'll do big in the bottom and a mix with the rest

ok i got the fungus gnats.. damn

first the mites then this immediately after or overlapping. plants are taking a beating from trying to get them cleared. they are also overdue to flip. trying to get them settled first.

so far i've done a couple weeks of iso spray and then neem oil spray. pretty much got the mites with that. continued with the neem for the gnats, and have flushed with h202 a couple times. they keep coming back. thinking of doing a BTK spray next.

gnats aren't supposed to be a serious thing in hempy, so i'm not sure why it's been so hard to clear the plants. i'm open to anyone's suggestions or experience. i got mosquiron novluron briquets, which seemed to be the closest thing to a mosquito dunk i could source. probably gonna have to try that soon if i can't get a better treatment.

Just a suggestion (not from experience) but are you plugging the drain hole when flushing with H2O2? I think I would consider doing that and filling the pot to the top and just let it sit there flooded for maybe 10 minutes? Then untape the drain hole. Not sure how long a fungus gnat can hold it's breath but I'll bet it's not 10 minutes. And I think your roots would be okay (because you're in hempy) to try this.

I read before that if you put sand on top of your medium it cuts the gnats all up when they try to crawl out of it.
