Hempy Headquarters

@FelipeBlu the hole is 2 inches from the bottom. When doing my research, this measurement was fairly consistent amongst everyone doing hempys so I didnt really question it (so it was 1/4 inch hole and that was a bit small lol).

If the hole is at 3 inches the "reservoir" would be bigger but I am not sure how much of a difference it would make here.

@TorturedSoul I am wondering the same thing. I would assume that Mr Hempy had an idea regarding reservoir size that could be scaled up or down. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find the "source" of this info but overall it seems like 2 inches was universal across those doing hempys

Awhile back I looked for more info on hempy and that led me here. Mr "hempy" did reveal his method on the ICmag forums years ago and other growers picked up on it. As much as he screamed up and down for everyone to recognize his resourcefulness I never could pinpoint much information on his grows. He said that he tried growing with different configurations like bigger holes or higher holes and much more. All this was here say from him and others.

This forum here is by far the best visual Hempy resource I have found for pertinent and relative information regarding this grow style...welcome to the Headquarters.

Does that maintain the same ratio of reservoir size to container size between the three containers?

Ya know, I keep meaning to check that. I will tonight, and get back to you. But it works very well to provide more reservoir as the plant gets bigger. A smaller reservoir may have you watering once a day (or more often) in late flower, if it’s a big plant in a 5 gallon bucket.

I do 2 1/2 inches with my 1.5gl Hempy Buckets. Only because the plastic container is smaller at the bottom than the top.

If that’s the Dollar Store wastebasket, I think that’s a great idea. 2” seems too low in that shape.

This is the hempy thread that converted me.

Me too!

Edited for clarity

Like an eight-year old boy who just discovered masturbation and decides that he invented it, huh?

Okay TS (and other hempyists),
Here’s the numbers:

(I must apologize for previously misstating my current height for solo cups, which actually is 1.5”)

1.5” high hole in solo cup - 22% reservoir

1” high hole in solo cup - 17.5% reservoir

2” high hole in DS wastebasket - 17.5%
2.5” high hole in DS wastebasket - 21.5%

2” high hole in 2 gallon bucket - 20%

3” high hole in 5 gallon bucket - 20.5%
2” high hole in 5 gallon bucket - 14.5%

From what I understand, the original Hempy (on MrNice?) was promoting hempy while growing in 2L soda bottles. I don’t have any of those around, but if someone can measure the volume % of that reservoir, then we’ll be able to compare with the ‘Gold Standard”

The original hempy on Mr. Nice?! I thought the original hempy posted the method way back in the mid '90s on the alt.drugs.pot.cultivation Usenet newsgroup.

If I recall correctly, the H on MrN claimed to be one and the same.

Well, it's been a long time (obviously) since I was "hanging out" on A.D.P.C in the '90s, but I don't remember thinking that the knowledgeable types were assholes, lol. Seemed like it was more "this is what I have to contribute; if you find it useful, great; if not, that's okay, too; if you want to debate about it, that's cool, one of us is bound to learn something - and, who knows, it might just be me."

I don't remember the guy who popularized "SCROG" claiming he invented it (although I could be wrong, because I've probably lost one or two brain cells in the intervening time). I think he just wanted to spread the knowledge, as opposed to getting his own footnote in The Great Book of Cannabis.

There were assholes, of course. They just weren't all that memorable, if you know what I mean.

Er... Maybe that was the early '90s, lol? AOL's Endless September led to the poisoning of many wells. . . .

Yes. It's the dollar store wastebasket. Seemed to small to me too

First off.... you guys made me feel really satisfied that I followed the impulse to open this door. :hugs::hugs::hugs:

I find straight sides so much more stable that I invested in the relatively expensive ones from the bath area of Big Lots. The small black trash can they sell runs $5, but it holds a gallon of perlite, stands stable, and completely blocks the light from the roots. Until I figured out how to upcan for massive yields they were my most consistent way to get 2+ oz of flower in a small footprint.

They’re so solid I suspect they’ll last me a lifetime of growing.

Mine are about 2 1/2" - 3" from the bottom. Same wastebasket. I like to run 2 plants in each of those, you know, just because.
--------------

I've been using rockwool cubes to start my seeds for the past few months. It has been a horrible experience for me. I thought it would simplify my life.. 12 seedling deaths tell a far different tale.

I found 4cm fabric pots online and picked up a brick of coco. I'm going to mix coco with some of my smaller lava rock and start seeds in those. Should be able to easily transfer them directly to the final hempy with little to no transplant shock.

Won't know if I don't try. My plants are already the perfect size (for my environment), nutes are simple and effective, just trying to streamline the process at this point.

Have you tried perlite to germinate your seeds? I have had near perfect success with just a small hempy cup with plastic wrap on the top and put the seed about 1/4" down (have to water before placing the seed or it can wash it down too far). Sue said she also does it a very similar way also with near perfect results.

Me too! Even works with other seeds.

I never had problems until I switched to rockwool. I think it is because I scar my seeds and shell gets bound up in the fibers.

Prior to rockwool I germinated in a recycled coco/perl/verm mix with near perfect results. I ran out, thought rockwool was the answer, now I ran out of that (about 10 cubes got tossed) so I decided to head back to coco.

I switched to lava rock because aquarium gravel was too heavy. That was a good idea.
