Heirloom's A Little Bit Of Everything - 2016 Journal

Just stopped for an update, expected the same O... but no! I got a full on update! Holy cow... going hydro, cool. I think a person that likes to be involved with the grow is perfect for hydro. If you have gnats you may not get rid of the little bastards... they love hydro :cheesygrinsmiley: so don't forget mosquito dunks! I have lowered the gnat situation drastically but there are grapes on the property and when we got here they had an established colony outside and inside as the basement was unsealed. The basement got sealed but they still persisted in the sump pumps, they are wicked. I put dunks in there and although it took a long time I got them under control...but... then we get the right fruit and BAM new fight! :cheesygrinsmiley:

Good luck with the new direction I have 0 advice about hydro or water systems but I know what I would wish for for outside... yes a timed system but one I could add nutrients into as needed so I could still control the grow rather than hope on a timed release nutrients

:roorrip:

PS congrats on your nomination for MOTM... good luck!

First, thank you Buck.

My Canna-roots are in hydro. Perpetual RDWC to be exact. It's nothing new to me. Relatively speaking I'm a new comer on the soil block, except fruits and veggies.

Gnats.....really? I never had gnats in my hydro, but that was in So Cal. Thrips once or twice, never the gnats. I do have gnats from another source, possibly a drain, and harvest season on the veggies doesn't help.

The outdoor stuff still has my brain churning. Currently I'm stuck on dry amends as the best thing because of volumes. But I am considering a Dosatron or four in a greenhouse. How much large volume soil mixing do I really want to do? I have all year to decide.

what about a "no till" greenhouse? :cheesygrinsmiley:

oh and somehow I am holding all these joints... I forgot how to pass :cheesygrinsmiley:

:roorrip:

here take this back

:passitleft:

stop giving it back! :cheesygrinsmiley:

That's definitely on the table. Right next to a hempy scrog greenhouse.

I wonder what a 50 gallon hempy would yield? The name Heath Robinson comes to mind thinking about a tree like that.

Good morning Heirloom. No matter how you grow, just grow.

:passitleft: Pass left

You can bet on that my friend.

:blunt:

Just swinging through and thought I'd share in the festivities. Morning guys.:hug::hug:

:passitleft:

A no-till greenhouse...... That's what caught my virtual ear. :laughtwo:

So here is a quick mock up of what's in my head. Things need cleaning, containers will be blacked out, and I need to order a couple new 8 port drip manifolds.

8 half gallon nut containers from Costco (Ok, maybe a pickle container too) fit the 1020 tray perfectly to make pots. Each pot drains into the center rib (or maybe 3 ribs) of the tray. The tray sits slightly elevated on the back side to drain back to the res. The res is a 1 gallon size container. I think it held peanut butter pretzels or something, also from Costco. Pump is submerged in less than 1 quart. I estimate the total required 'running' volume to be around 1 gallon at any given time. Pump kicks on every few hours for 5 or 10 minutes....plants go crazy.

I can put two side by side in a 27x27 inch marshydro tent, and have room around the perimeter for low CFL supplemental lighting.

I also have a crayon drawing, but I'm not sharing my blueprints, lol.

And the recent clones are looking good.

Have a wonderful Friday!

:passitleft: Sounds like an ecologically sound plan, what with all the plastic containers you saved from the landfill. Shoot! I was hoping for the colorful crayon mock-up! :laughtwo:

Look how handy that particular idiosyncrasy came to be. Dale collected catalogues. That drove me a bit nuts, and then, just as I was beginning to get him to accept the idea that we really didn't need 10 years worth of back issues of Woodworker's Supply catalogues they offered cash against purchases if you had old catalogue covers. Dale scored $150 worth of free tools for his hobbies. One happy woodworker, one frustrated wife. I knew he'd never throw another one away. :laughtwo:

I used to purge every year, on the sly. Hahaha!

Heirloom, I got what you're looking to do and looking forward to seeing it! :goodjob:

FYI...I think you MAY end up switching to a larger res. :hmmmm:

Those small reservoirs become much more difficult to control swings in PH and PPM and, with the number of plants in the reservoir drinking up the nutes, plus evaporation, plus the "minimum" level of nutrient solution needed to effectively run the pump, plus the displacement caused by having the pump in the res, I think you may be changing the res pretty frequently (every day or two!). If you can get your hands on a 3-5 gallon res, I think you'll be much more stable and down to something like weekly res changes.

This is just a "guestimate" based on my experience with the 2-L hempys (and Waterfarms). I think the hempys were taking (based on some quick math!) about 6oz. of nutes each, every two days.

The time schedule could end up being just auto water with as little run off as possible. Maybe it's just an elaborate way to get out of hand watering and recirc isn't a good idea, dunno yet. I'll be able to control flow from a drip to a stream as well as pump on time down to 1 minute. Trying to avoid gallons of waste while staying on top of watering every one.

I do understand what you're saying about the small res and overall solution stability. I learned that in my RDWC.

:thanks:

Heirloom, wow my brotha, congrats on your MOTM nomination!! been too busy to be around here much lately but it seems to me your hanging in very well, and your attitude is right where it should be...cheers to ya and have an awesome Sat .:Namaste:

duggan my friend, thank you and congrats to you as well. And good luck to you. :thumb:

Truth be told I am going a bit crazy. My sleep patterns are all messed up. I've got the 'missing the outdoors/sun blues' like people get living in the PNW when it's gray for 4 or 5 months. I'll get by though.

I found out a few minutes ago that a main branch on one of the outdoor plants has been nearly tore off.

It looks like either a dog or a deer got caught up in the green training tape and then took off. It pulled the metal grid the branch was tied to, as well as tossed the medium sized rock that was holding it down.

I so need a greenhouse. For many security reasons. Heck, the plants need security from my security.

Sigh.

Hey Heir,...bummer, sounds like a bambi for sure....really wanted to start munching them. What's good is the fact that your security worked....whatever it was , buggered off without eating anything. Can the branch be repaired or is it toast?

I have not seen it yet. But it sounds like there is only skin holding it on. I'm gonna go look at it in a few minutes.

The joys of growing outdoors. The damage sounds like deer, and it's nearly impossible to keep deer away without bullets. Determined buggers. Hopefully you can reattach the branch. If not process it as juice and let it help you heal. In case you're not juicing now, and given your physical challenges you should be, get a lemongrass juicer. The resin from cannabis will destroy a regular juicer.

There's lots of healing goodness in raw buds and leaves.

I take it your already drawing up plans for this much-needed greenhouse?

This is going to be a great thing for Heirloom I think. Good thing about a greenhouse is you can stand up and have the plants raised slightly so that all that bending can be eliminated.
