I’m really interested that you topped one of the autos. I have a bunch of auto seeds ands that’s what I’ll be growing for a while... so I’m tempted to top one or two. But some people say never do that.
You can definitely top autos. @Dutchman1990 does quadlining with his which is essentially topping once above the 4th node, and then stripping nodes one and two. He's has great success with many auto strains and has a couple of journals showing his technique.

...lot's of people top auto's without any issue, and I've seen some pretty impressive results here at the mag...I've only played with auto's, but my experience is that you have to have a strain that will give you a chance...last auto's i grew, threw pistols at 14 days!!?...still went 10 weeks tho'...but the yield/quality isn't my cup of tea...cheerz... :high-five: ...h00k...:hookah:

I'm still a rookie but I've topped several autos. I think success depends on strain. It's just a guess but my gorilla glue's didn't like it. On the other hand a cream auto did well. So IDK I didn't top my current grow

...auto's aren't for everybody...some people love them, but imho, I can get better quality herb and better yield for just a little more time and more consistency through solid genetic's...don't get me wrong, I'll still probably still play through some freebie packs, as I wait for for weather in the spring every year(alway's hoping for a holy grail), but personally,I believe photo's provide you the best bang for your buck, especially given the cost of seeds these day's...next year, I'll likely be putting effort into seed production with some of the seed stock I have on hand...cheerz... :high-five: ...h00k...:hookah:

Very cool, thanks!

I think I’m gonna try it.

:welcome: to my grow journal, DeeBoy.

I create spreadsheets for all of my grows (despite the fact that I suck at math). It's the best way to keep on top of everything, in my opinion. And, besides that I  Microsoft Excel. It's such a versatile program.

I had 50 Dark Devil Auto seeds so experimenting with topping one of them was a no brainer. I won't do it on a Dark Devil again but I'm not ruling it out for other autoflowers.
Been wanting to get Dark Devil seeds for awhile from Seedsupreme for awhile now. I made an order from a friend of mine for 900+ seeds that sells seeds for $1.00. He has over 100 different strains.
Going to purchase another 2000+ seeds soon, and stash them In a freezer! ^_^

I think I’m gonna try it.
What strains are you running. I'm curious as to how it turns out depending on Indica or sativa dominate just an idea. Also I read or saw that not topping autos started when autos were a new item and genetics weren't as stable. The point being after so many generations topping is no longer a problem in established strains.

genetics play out a little differently with autos.

Hey lady!
Had a bit of free time to catch up since it's raining again.

I wouldn't bother topping your DDA.
It's a strain that doesn't appear to be as stable as others.
I didn't do any type of training on mine whatsoever as I was afraid of stressing her.
I'm dropping a few for the next grow in about two weeks or so. Hoping for giant mutants but I'll probably SPOG™ them.
Dang! Now I'm nervous.

Hope you and FP are having a good weekend.

Growing 2 mainly indica 2 mainly sativa. Northern Lights, Big Bud, Amnesia and Green Crack (the runt).

what do you think of maybe a UBT - uncle ben's technique ? you top and train out four branches early to essentially get four spears. it's not a quad. you just tie the four mains back a bit. keep the side branching minimal and clear the very bottom as you go.

i think it's something @Justin Goody had going in a journal.

i got some autos coming and i'm thinking of giving this a shot. i'm pretty sure justin was running autos when he did this.

I don't believe this was me. I've been skipping the quads and doing Hex/Octoline for a while.
Nothing ever gets 100% trained but I get them most of the way there and then let them go, and keep the undersides very clean. Sounds interesting though, and like a good space saver.

I have only done UBT on a photo.

My thinking may evolve with my own personal experience but so far I've been hands off with my autos. I plan to run my next DDAs the same as last time. I think I started them in one gallon pots and transplanted into fives.
No training.
Once I gain more confidence I'll try to be more adventurous with my autos.

@Mr. Krip ? perhaps. i'm sure it was a mod. was the first time i ran in to the approach. i randomly tie stuff all the time, but this was an actual clean technique.

how did the ubt work for you ?
i have to run them hempy as well. could be an early trigger or an uncontained jungle result.

octoline sounds like quad x 2 @Justin Goody. you say it's not as aggressive, i should look in to it.
will have a run through your journal when i get a chance.

My first GSC auto (biggest I’ve ever grown) and a few others have been OctoLines.
The current photo GSC is also growing that way. Topped above the 5th, lowest branch stripped off, 4 pairs of branches remain.

It started as an experiment but has been working well on several plants. I almost never go quad now, almost always hex and lots of bending.

The plant had good structure when she was done. Grow went fine.

I believe that Amy did a few UBT. Think that's where I first heard about it.

great ... now i have to make choices lol

there's no hope of me growing a stalk that thick in my system lol :p

other than that i'm looking in to it. i still will have a need to train under most circumstances, but i'm trying to dial the torture chamber back a bit. my approach is very aggressive, just want to tone down a bit.

I hear ya. I feel like Octo is pretty non aggressive. It's just clipping 3 places around week 3 and a bit of bending and a few days maintenance. Otherwise the plant really does all the rest. I'm a fairly constant defol guy and just make sure especially in the first days of flower that everything can see the light. After that I do more tucking. Most of the bending I do is just to get tops at the same level early in it's life.
I rarely follow through with training til the end lol most of my wires are off or connected to nothing by now. Still I seem to make out ok on my yields...
