HashGirl's First Indoor Grow: Dark Devil Autos In Hempy, 2020

Thanks, hook! :hugs:

So, when do I take the plastic off? DDA1 is already stretching. DDA2 is a little behind but they've been growing all day and I know this because I took 4 sets of photos to get the ones I posted above and I started first thing this morning when they were barely poking out of the perlite to just now when I looked and DDA1 is almost touching the plastic. Granted DDA1's cup had more perlite in it because of the mishap I had with losing DDA2 in the perlite and having to find her and fish her out and replant. Honestly, I didn't even think of adding more perlite.

And, when do I water again? Do you ever have to flush the plants? And, what does that mean exactly? And, is that with or without nutrients? And, how do I know which nutrients and how much of each? And, Felonious also has the following questions:

1. How often do you feed the plants? Do you water and then feed or do it at the same time?

2. SweetSue's germination tutorial said that she always aims for 5.5 pH. Felonious showed me this nutrient chart (see below) that shows some nutrients don't get to the roots at that low of a pH. Do you have a range that you would normally adhere to?

Sue said that she doesn't know that much about pH and said I should consult @FelipeBlu so Felipe, can you help?

Congrat's on your retirement, @HashGirl! Looks like you have a good plan for it! :D

I grew in perlite hempys for a number of years. Hempy is treated like Hydro (NOT soil) so you have the wrong PH chart there. You should be aiming for around 5.5-5.8 and use Hydro nutes since there are no microbes to break down the soil nutes.

The hempys usually go dry every two days, once the plants get going, and you'll know when to water because the buckets will be extremely light. I would feed with every watering.

It's a good idea to do a pre-harvest flush. This can be done with plain water, though, I've read that a very low dosage of nutes in the flush helps release any bound up nutes in the perlite. That being said, I used to use a flushing agent (Clearex) which allowed the plants to flush in a couple of days, instead of a couple of weeks, so you can maximize the nutrient uptake.

I hope that helps! :goodluck:

Krip’s got ya covered! :thumb:

With hempy, you get a “flush” of sorts every time you water/fertigate. Just make sure to get a good pee from the hole. Once in a while, I cover the hole and add solution until the perlite lifts up a little, then uncover the hole and let fly - flushed!

Good afternoon, everyone and :welcome: to my grow journal.

Here are today's pictures:

Should I take the plastic wrap off the cups now?

Good afternoon, Mr. Krip and thank you for your help above. I'm still not really clear on how I know how much of each nutrient to use each time. I'm using the General Hydroponics Flora Series. This is the link to their feed charts but I'm not sure which one I'm supposed to be using?

I was told that hempy was a drain-to-waste grow and this is the one suggested for that:

General Hydroponics – Grow indoor. Grow outdoor. Grow with us.

And, is flushing just watering without nutrients?

The GH Flora series is fine and I used that for a while on my hempys, too. You do have the correct feeding chart. Hempy is passive hydro but is also drain-to-waste since you're not recirculating the same nutrients throughout the week as you would with a DWC, for example.

The amounts given are how much of each nutrient solution to mix per gallon of water, depending on the stage of growth, which is listed in weeks.

So, in week #4 (for example), if you wanted to mix up a half gallon of nutes, you would add 2ml of each of the Micro, Grow & Bloom. In week #6, you'd add 2ml of Micro, 0.5ml of Grow, and 2.5ml of Bloom. (NOTE: Half the amount listed for a full gallon!)

Flushing is the process of helping the plant get rid of any excess salts (nutrients) so you have a cleaner tasting and cleaner burning product. You can do this a number of ways including dumping a bunch of water through the hempy bucket to "flush" any nutes from the medium and then feeding only plain H2O from some period of time (the amount of time is debatable but most recommend a two week flush with water). If using a flushing agent, like Clearex, you flush the medium with the Clearex then plain H2O for only two days.

Let me know if you're still confused on the nute schedule! ;)

I would stick with the dose for seedlings until there are a couple sets of serrated leaves (after the cotyledons, or seed leaves), or you see the cotyledons start to turn yellow, whichever comes first.

Flushing can also be done with a low concentration fertilizer solution. I don’t find that perlite hempy builds up salts like soil and coco - primarily because of its low CEC.

Hmmm :nerd-with-glasses:, if you just give plain water for two weeks, you risk starving the plant right when it’s bulking up, and reducing your ultimate yield. I just don’t think it’s necessary with perlite hempy. But you’re a long while before then. You have time to do some research.
You can start with:

Should I take the plastic wrap off the cups now?
Absolutely yes! AFAIK ... Unless hempy is super different u totally don’t need the cling wrap over it. I thought @SweetSue was coaching you through this, where the hell is she!? LOL :laughtwo:

seedlings don’t need anything special, just good veg temp and humidity in their zone (25-26ªC and 55-65%)

:Namaste:

Yes! Typically, you don't start the seedlings on nutes until they have three full sets of leaves (not counting cotyledons). :thumb:

Emilya, MrSauga, and I (and others) have been pushing the nutrients earlier without adverse effects. Some strains can handle it.
But it is perfectly acceptable to let the plant start with the energy it has in the seed and let it tell you when it’s ready for more.

Okay, one more question. When we did the initial nutrients (above), my husband said that even though the label said to add FloraBloom, he didn't think it should be added since the plants are nowhere near the flowering stage. Was that a mistake? Should I use the nutrients exactly as recommended above?

Hey HashGirl thought I'd reply while the U.S members wake up :)

First off I'm no expert, and second I have no experience with that line of nutes.

With that said, I would suggest there's no mistake. It's a three part nute mix, you should use all three parts, all the way through.

Should I use the nutrients exactly as recommended above?

Oh my a can of worms there :). In my opinion I'd say no, I'd start at a lower ratio. Maybe a quarter strength, and work up from there.

I'm using a different line of 3 part nutes, and only just got up to a little over half strength towards the end of the grow.

The good news is you have a while before your little ones are going to need feeding. I'm sure that'll give you chance to collect other opinions :).

Everything's looking good, glad your enjoying your new hobby.

:Namaste:
