Haight Solid State vs. H.G.LED

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

I really can't congratulate you enough SS! This is precisely the kind of clean, well structured, well documented, independent LED grow we have all been waiting for! Keep the excellent photos coming!

This is the best LED comparison tread I've seen to date... Great show :goodjob:

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

Still too soon to tell the difference. This is looking a lot like Irish's grow comparison with Hydro Grow and ProSource with HG taking a slight lead in the veg cycle but ProSource definitely doing a much better job in the flowering phase. Way too early in this grow other than to say that each set of plants are looking healthy and growing well.

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

With my 250w HID, I can pull 1.5-2 oz per plant. If I can achieve the same yield or close to the same with less watts, I would find that more than reasonable.

SS, how many plants can you comfortably fit under a 250w HID?

Anyone growing with a 400w HID, I'd love to hear how many plants you all put under that size light as well.

I use a 400w hps in 8 sq feet = 50w a sq foot. Some growers I've seen only put as few as 4 girls in that area. Unfortunately with the strain I use if I want 1g per watt in 8sq feet I need to do a SOG.

I don't sell, so I don't own a scale and never bothered to check weights, however SOG with an even canopy is probably the way these LED lights will perform best. We'll see in a few months. Looking healthy so far! The VK strain is short, wide, and compact by nature, so I wouldn't be supprised if this grow resembles SOG. Keep up the great work, Setting Sun.:thankyou:

Sunny Boy, You Da Man! I really love this thread and appreciate the great job you're doing with the side-by-side comparison. :slide: Great photos and commentary!
Thanks so much for your efforts. You are doing a great service to 420 Magazine and the entire cannabis growing community. In fact, I believe you deserve recognition from President Obama! Seriously, I follow this grow with great anticipation.
Best,

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

They all look healthy and fairly even so far. The pics make it easy to compare.

Thank you for the feedback Bolivar! I'm trying to take pics that will facilitate comparison, so that's very nice to hear ;).

That's what peaked my interest in LEDs. As far as them stayng compact, I think its the lights. My WW did the same at that age. WW is gererally a medium to tall plant.

Yep, regardless of yield, LED lights do open the doors and make growing a possibility for people with heat issues.

How big did your WW wind up?

thank you sweetherb!

It was an honor to be asked to do this comparison grow, and I'm grateful for the opportunity ;).

thank you for your kind words and support!

thank you dogsnova!

maybe the best is yet to come ;)

I agree.

At this point, each set of plants is looking healthy and growing well.

thanks for the feedback, baldalicious!

Setting Sun, Looks good! :peace:

thank you cocoJoe!

I'm happy with how they're doing ;).

thanks hydronewbie!

I believe in the legalization and decriminalization of marijuana, and in pursuit of that mission, I'm grateful for whatever I can bring to the table.

thank you for the encouragement ;)

Anyone growing with a 400w HID, I'd love to hear how many plants you all put under that size light as well.

I only have three under my 400. A few fist-size colas at six weeks in on a bagseed grow. Only have about 8-8.5 sq. ft. flowering area. I would have four underneath it but one was a male so I liberated it real early. I'm using mylar on four sides and even with that and 400 watts I would like more light. Not getting much on lower budsites. I did veg for close to two months though so as big as my plants are now they're in five gallon buckets. I'd think you'd be able to get a good size harvest of many decent bud sites on two plants with a 400. Extended veg time, of course.

I've come to where I believe that for maximum yield indoors, it's going to be hard to beat SOG or SCROG grow methods. A really packed-in 12/12 from seed grow might even be the most efficient in my 7.8 sq ft tents.

In my last grow, I had three plants that I LST'ed just before bloom, and they filled the tent in nicely with many secondary colas. I don't think I would try finishing more than 4 plants in my tents unless it was a 12/12 from seed grow.

I like VK a lot so far. It would be great if the ladies stay fairly low and spread out because that would make the most of the LED's.

Nobody's going to chime in on whether LED's allow more control over plant height than HID?

thanks for all the good discussion peeps!

It's about 14" 10 days into 12/12 just showing the first signs of preflower.
I cut the light back at 9" 4 week veg.
On this one, all I am attempting to test is flower density.

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

My first plant under the ufo stetched really bad. given it was my first attempt ever, but it jumped almost 24in. Second attempt didnt stretch at all with more wattage, and lst.

your 250w setup gives you abt 45-60g per plant, thats really a great amount with 3 ladies. going to go looking for cool tube unit to put in closet. my buds arent as fat as i would like. good luck to you, hope the finsih fat.

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

I bet they do! I had to cut back my crop twice under my HPS due to lack of expansion space!

MH would work better than HPS for keeping plants short if you can run MH bulbs.

The "sweet spot" with LED's where you have them close enough to avoid stretch but not too close is easier to play with than with HID because you don't have the same risk of burning your plants with heat from having the lights too close. I've read that having LED's too close can cause stunting, which doesn't seem like a good thing, but a little stunting may be something that we could exploit to our benefit once we develop a feel and better understanding of how plants grow under these lights.

I think as far as HID goes, a 400w would be perfect in my tents, but the 250 provides us with enough meds, so I haven't upgraded.

More wattage and LST sounds like a good combo ;).

I'm hoping they finish fat also. Did some VK research last night and read very good yield and smoke reports.

thanks wct ;)

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

Setting Sun - Good go
I'm currently using the Haight 800 for flowering. I know what their advertisement says, But how close do you plan to put your light when flowering?

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

When, I asked manufacturer they said minimum recommended distance of 6". At 3" light footprint would seem to get small. Don't you think.

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

The above recommendation is recent, so you may want to contact the manufacturer and re-inquire.

I guess whether the footprint would be too small at 3" would depend on the area of the canopy. The HSS design really throws a wide beam, so that helps, but it's hard to answer your question without knowing how much area you'd be trying to cover.

I haven't dropped the HSS light down that low to see what happens to the coverage, but I'll check it out.

thanks kevin!

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

Don't want to get ahead of your grow, but at 3" footprint can't be much wider than the unit. Also at 3" the upper fan leaves block out more light from lower buds as compared to 6-12".
