Haight Solid State vs. H.G.LED

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

I'm also starting a LED grow experiment using 9 cutting taken from a Pineapple Express mother plant, laid out in a 3x3 formation. Using 4 UFO 90w quad band LED's. Placed at each edge and angled in to maximize light coverage. I'll be starting mid February.

Report back if you start a journal. I'm interested to see the grow.

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

I have some in the last few weeks of flowering now. As soon as there done I start journaling the new grow.

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

Don't want to get off-topic, but MH can take plants all the way through to harvest very nicely. Some of the most experienced growers here will confirm that.

off-topic, yes but very true. I believe MH buds are also better buds! Nice Setting Sun, the grow looks wunderbar! :peace:

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

Still looking good. How tall are the plants? I'd veg them out a bit longer I think, they need to be at least 10 inches tall before flowering.

We were hoping for 12" before the flip at 4 weeks

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

I think next time I would go with 50/50 FFOF and Perlite.

Very good idea. I am using the FFOF with about 20% pearlite and 5% vermiculite this time. The soil still compacts too much and retains water too long. I will be upping both next go.

I will be watching to the end. Looking for a good clone/mother light for future projects. So far I am really liking the T5-HO's but this may change my mind.

Great job documenting everything down to the tiniest detail. This should be required reading for all new growers. Great info here.

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

I've also seen photos of bud bleaching, where the tips go white, if the LED is too close

I've seen a couple of pics of that white bleaching also, but they weren't very good quality. I think I also remember reading that bleached buds are pretty much ruined. HID's probably bleach things white also if too close, at least for the few seconds before they get brown and crispy ;).

Very interesting. Thanks. Are those fans on top of the one light unit?

You're welcome ;).

Yes, the HGL light has fans on top to exhaust heat.

The pots should dry out faster now that the plants are bigger. I think next time I would go with 50/50 FFOF and Perlite.

That's been one of my problems. The pots take half a week to dry out. Even when the plants get big. Was thinking of increasing the % of perlite, but is 50/50 to high.

The only adjustment you have to make as you go up on the Perlite is to go up on your nutes if necessary to make up for the thinned-out soil. FFOF is a rich mix, and I probably could have completed the veg cycle in this grow without any additional nutes.

You can grow *really* nice plants in 100% Perlite, you just have to supply all of the nutes.

I would like to have them around 12" before flowering. The HGL plants are about 5-6", and the HSS plants 6-7". They have a full week to grow before 4 weeks veg, so we'll see how it goes. There needs to be some degree of flexibility with this decision. The plants don't always cooperate with our plans ;).

thanks Joe!

I bet coco would be an excellent medium for LED grows. Any thoughts?

have to disagree - yes it works but HPS will give you thicker, denser, more glorious nuggets, especially with a couple fluoros to help.

Yep, I think 50/50 Perlite with a good rich soil like FFOF would work great.

Vermiculite is not as PH stable as many people think, and its purpose is to retain water, not increase drainage, so I don't use it.

Thanks for following and for your kind words ;).

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

For what it's worth:

I flipped my WW to 12/12 at 4 weeks- 9"tall (fear of stretching). Probably have gone another week or even 10 days or 3" or 4" inches taller.

Great photos.

Thanks.

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

All the babies look really good.

Keep up the good work on this test! :goodjob:

Hey I had a quick question, I noticed it on your pic's, but I notice alot of people's babies are soooo shiny. Is that neem oil or how do you get them to be shiny like that on their own? My leaves on my next grow's babies are rich and healthy just like your babies but are never that shiny. Is that my humidity maybe?

I know they seem to really like getting their morning bath. Oh hey one more question, what should my foliar spray's (whether water or feeding) ph be?

Thanks :ganjamon: +rep

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

Setting Sun, Just a general question. The LED's sure promise the world. Theres another sponser called envirotech lighting. They have beefy cfl's,is there any chance of a challenge between their 250w vs LED winner?

BTW i would like to nominate yourself as the grower. You are swell. LOL

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

hey man skip the mh hps comparison positive its been done! I think what would be interesting to a lot of people is UV fluoro vs. regular fluoro try say 2x20w 10.0 uv-b and 2x20w t5 supplementing a 250 or 400w.

After visiting them tonight, I think they may be at just about the right height at 4 weeks. They liked their first feeding ;).

Thanks for the info, it helps a lot to get feedback from other LED growers.

I haven't used neem oil or anything else on the leaves except for spraying them down once with RO water to clean off the leaves. Shiny leaves are a sign of a healthy plant with a strong immune system, so it's a good thing to see. Humidity certainly affects how leaves look, so I suppose it could have a part in it also. My RH is running a bit low at 45% right now, so maybe the thicker leaves you get with higher RH aren't quite as shiny. Another factor is lighting and photography.

Foliar sprays should generally be in the same range as soil nutes at 6.5 or thereabouts. What do you foliar feed with?

Thank you for the very nice compliment ;).

As far as future comparisons, I really can't commit to anything specific at this point, but I'm leaving my options open.

I work full-time and have a family, so the dreaded balance thing must be considered ;).

Which brand of 90w UFOs are you using, if you don't mind me asking? I've been considering doing the same; three UFOs or maybe three of the lower power HGL Penetrators to give a wider spread of the light. I could do just one 120w HGL or one 180w ProSource, but three 60w Penetrators would equal 180w but with a wider spread and a little more light flexibility. Then again, the Haight Solid State kinda does that already and isn't it around 180w? Hmmmm, lots to ponder.

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

SS
How close do you have the HSS to your plants now. Did they give you any instructions on how to use the lower settings and distance from plants. My veg area has a height problem.

Yep, I think 50/50 Perlite with a good rich soil like FFOF would work great.

You bet Sun.
Coco is very close to growing in soil. The only problem i have with coco is lock-out. So I use Clearex as often as needed. Coco is a faster medium than soil. I think I'm saying should work fine, LEDs and coco.

Your soil mix seems quick tho. The only way I would use soil again is 50/50 perlite/FFOF. :peace:

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

Something called Foliar Harmony...from Ebay....I have never used it yet, was scared away from it last grow by the threat of PM.

Am gonna start on my new grow, not even sure how old before I should start. I have the thread in my sig. Comment if you think they need it.

:thankyou: :peace:

Per competition rules outlined in the opening post, the weakest plant in each group will be culled today at 3 weeks veg.

The plants culled will be HGL 2 and HSS 3. HGL 2 is the outlier in the HydroGrowLED group by virtue of being the shortest and most compact plant in the group with possibility of being a different pheno, and HSS 3 is the outlier in the Haight Solid State group due to being the slowest grower and smallest plant in that group.

The pots finally got light and dry and I gave them their first feeding yesterday. I went with 1/2 strength Fox Farms schedule at 3 weeks veg, which works out to 1.5 tsp of Grow Big and 1 Tbsp of Big Bloom per gallon of RO water, and each tent took 2 gallons. The PH of the nute solution was 6.4. PH of the soil runoff was 5.9.

I did not add Cal-Mag to this feeding because I only watered until I got light runoff, so I did not flush out a lot of minerals. The next watering it will be just water, Cal-Mag, and Maxi-Crop seaweed. The pots should dry out faster now that the plants are bigger. I think next time I would go with 50/50 FFOF and Perlite.

The tentative plan is to switch them to 12/12 at 4 weeks veg next Wednesday! :slide:
I know those two culled will be in that cabinet under the 150 ?? :surf:
