Haight Solid State vs. H.G.LED

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

Well Brother, I'm highly impressed with your comparative work so far. Hopefully you'll be able to squeeze more out of these lights than anyone else has so far.

I'll continue to quietly follow along...

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

Responding to a question I received about the set point being used for light height...

From post #1 in this journal, each manufacture provided a range to be used...

2) Manufacturer's recommendation for use.

  • HydroGrowLED recommends that their lights be used within 6 — 12″ from your canopy for best results. Approximate coverage Area of 2′ x 3′ at 12″ above your Canopy
  • Haight State recommends that the PPF-800 should be positioned 12-18 inches above the canopy. Closer than 6 inches can result in stunted growth during the vegetative stage but it is a good idea to move the lights closer during the second half of flowering

The lights were initially placed toward or at the high end of the manufacturer's recommendations: the HGL light at 12" above the pots and the HSS light at 16".

Both manufacturer's requested that we lower their lights to settings within the pre-agreed ranges, which is where they are now; 12" for Haight and 6" for HGL.

We hope this clarifies

I have a gread deal of respect for your grow chops, so your comments mean are very encouraging, brother.

I'm going to do my best to squeeze as much yield from these lights as I can, and I'm hoping the results will show what can reasonably be expected.

thanks for dropping in SouthernWeed, any visits, and any comments or suggestions would be very welcomed ;).

Best in 2010.

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

Subscribed and pulled up a chair. I need to buy a new light system this year and this will help. Thanks so much SS, Consumer Reports could learn a thing or two from you. Also, Thanks to Baldalicious for the referral to this thread. Any plans to mimic a similar trial with hydroponics? This is actually a very exciting horticultural experiment - all things being equal. When cannabis is decriminalized/regulated in California THIS YEAR, we'll be seeing much more research and development like this noble experiment. :goodjob::nicethread::cheertwo:

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

Wow. I just found this (I'ma nube and just joined so, gimme a break) but what a great idea. What I can't help thinking tho, is that a third competitor should have been added; a comparable HID set up. As a nub who's planning my first grow and trying to decide on what lighting to use, I have been searching high and low for comparison grow tests between HID and LED. I really, really want to go with LED because of the heat, utility costs of HID but LED grow lights are newer, still being developed and evolving. HID is tried and proven. Too late now but including a comparable HID grow in this test would have been very informative. Still, a very interesting thread indeed.

High baldalicious!

thanks for joining and welcome to 420Mag!

I agree that it would add a tremendous amount of dimension to the comparison if we were also running an HID tent.

For those who have been growing with HID for a while, and have some idea of what yields are possible, it'll be easier to make a mental comparison to the final results of this grow.

I would love to run 3 identical tents, but 2 is all I can do for now. I will continue to do comparison grows of one type or another, so LED vs HID is definitely a possibility. Pitting the winner of this comparison vs HID would be fun.

There are some very experienced growers following this journal, so the discussion of the results should be helpful to everyone following regardless of their own experience.

I'd also like to thank you for referring others to this journal ;).

very nice to meet you baldalicious!

High hydronewbie! thanks for subscribing!

My goal is to approach this product comparison from the perspective of the consumer, so I'm trying to discuss issues and answer questions that I would be asking about if I was considering the purchase.

I do plan on growing with both passive and active hydro in the future, and I probably won't do any future grows without comparing something, so it's very possible.

I love experimenting and comparing. I've been sort of a dream of mine to have a comparison grow setup like this for quite a while, and I'm grateful that things panned out. I'm looking forward to maybe helping lay to rest some myths and controversies.

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

My goal is to approach this product comparison from the perspective of the consumer, so I'm trying to discuss issues and answer questions that I would be asking about if I was considering the purchase.

A very good approach. As I read deeper into the LED thing, the biggest rap against LEDs seems to be flowering phase; "it worked fine in vegetative but the flowers didn't develop" but those who complain mention buying an LED panel off of eBay or something. They never say which LED unit made by whom they tried and there are a lot of choices available. Then I've read posts from others who have said that their results using LED have been fantastic, "much better than with CFLs and HIDs" and that they'll never use anything else again. But these peeps never seem to say which LED panel made by whom they used to give them those great results. Here, finally, is a comparison of two LED panels from germination to harvest from two manufacturers who have claimed to do extensive research on wavelength tuning, et al.

Clearly, there are a lot of early manufacturers of LED grow lights just threw a bunch of red a blue leds together and called it a grow light and a bunch of eager consumers bought them only to be underwhelmed with the result thereby putting an early negative bias against LEDs. But some far sighted people realized LEDs' potential and began actually doing research to develop LED grow lights which would work, companies like Haight and Hydro Grow. One thing which should be abundantly obvious now to everyone is that just buying any old LED grow panel from anyone selling them is a waste of time. Concentrate on those companies like Haight and Hydro Grow, ProSource et al who have done the research and leg work to develop LED grow lights which will work from germ to harvest using the best most cost effective leds which really do enhance plant growth. This comparison grow is a great step in that direction. I just wish I had time to wait for the final results. I gotta buy now and Cammie's Penetrator is at the top of my list. In fact, I'd never heard of Haight until I saw this thread. Just looked at their site and the 800 is out of stock anyway. So...

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

well said baldalicious
these LEDs used for the comp looked expensive at first for 1 light. BUT if SS can pull off 4 nicely flowering plants with a 125w lighting setup ill be the next guy in line to buy one! oh and maybe a tent lol

keep up the good work SS i cant wait to see these babies groooooooow!

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

How often do you plan to post photos of this grow? Looking forward to the progressive documentation.

I'm just as curious as everyone else ;).

I'm going to do my best to post pics of each plant individually at least twice a week. They sprouted on a Wednesday, so I'm shooting for Wednesdays and Sundays. I'm a night owl, so I usually do my journal updates in the early a.m.

I may fill in with a few quickies in between of just one plant from each tent that I think is fairly representative of that group of plants.

Hopefully, that should provide a pretty good idea of how things are rolling along.

thanks hydronewbie!

They're looking good.

Not sure if it's the strain, the lights, or a combination of both, but I'm liking the way these plants are staying short and stacking up. The HGL plants, in particular, are short and stout, with nice thick stems. The HSS plants are less compact and have slightly larger and less rounded leaves. Overall growth seems fairly equal.

It seems from what I've read and from this grow, that LED's may make it possible to "tune" a plant's height more effectively than HID. I'm getting a sense of the plants being more sensitive and reactive to their distance from the light. Does keeping LED's down low inhibit vertical growth more than with HID? That would certainly be a benefit for most indoor grows.

Some good news on the energy front. I set up a regular 12" house fan up high on a wall in the garage to circulate the heat from the space heater.

Walked into the garage the next morning and ambient temp had gone up from 73 to 82 degrees! I was able to turn the thermostat way down on the space heater and still achieve 75 ambient. So, if you ever use a radiant-heat type space heater that just passively radiates heat, you can greatly increase efficiency by using a fan to circulate the heat.

As far as watering, the pots are still fairly heavy and the plants don't look thirsty. Even with the 33% Perlite, the pots are taking far longer to dry out than with HID lights. The cotyledons are still nice and green, and I have not fed them any nutes thus far.

Next update will be on Wednesday, which will be 3 weeks veg. Two of the plants will be culled and removed on Wednesday. So far, it's looking like HGL 2 and HSS 3. HGL 2 is the shortest plant out of all 10, and may be a different pheno. HSS 3 is just generally smaller than her 4 tent mates.

thanks for following and hope you all have a great week!

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

Setting Sun,

Amazing setup,very clean and tight.

My 90w was sold to me as an equivilant to a 400w hps (not even close). Are you hoping 126g/w for entire grow, or per plant? Ive heard so many promises and theories, whats reasonable?

wct

thank you wct!

What's reasonable is a great question. I think it may be easier to answer that after the grow is done.

For me, it has to do with energy and efficiency. With my 250w HID, I can pull 1.5-2 oz per plant. If I can achieve the same yield or close to the same with less watts, I would find that more than reasonable.

Being able to grow in climates too hot or grow spaces too small for HID would also affect what I would consider reasonable. Some bud is a whole lot better than no bud.

hopefully, this grow will help answer the question of what's reasonable for you.

thanks again brother ;)

That's what peaked my interest in LEDs. As far as them stayng compact, I think its the lights. My WW did the same at that age. WW is gererally a medium to tall plant.
