I don't really know. I haven't had Sour Diesel yet, so it may be a similar buzz, from the way I've heard it described. In fact, I've often wondered if the unknown genetics are close to SD.
Anyway, most strains have a sedative effect once the rush wears off. I get the euphoric high which lasts 15-20 minutes before it fades, and then the underlying stone will last a couple hours. That underlying stone is different in Carnival and similar strains. Usually I'll feel tired and unmotivated.
But with Carnival, after an hour or so I feel like moving around and doing something. I still feel stoned but not inactive. Instead of vegging at the puter I feel like walking the dog or taking care of some chore. I'm more eager to engage with the world and find out what it may have to offer. I don't know if it showed at the beach but I'm a fidgety guy. When I'm sitting relaxed, I'll bounce my knee or foot, my arms are quick to gesture, etc. I noticed that at 2:00 in the morning, after constantly "sipping" a few hits every 20 minutes all evening, my foot will still be bouncing, and I don't feel fatigued. I'm tired and ready to sleep but I'm not stoned out.
That's always been the fly in the ointment for me (and many others) with cannabis use. I feel better stoned, but I don't feel like doing much, right? So Carnival puts me in my right mind and doesn't isolate me as a loadie. And because I know that, I can get high with ... freedom? I know I won't have to fight fatigue. That makes the rush even better, y'know?
Africans and SE Asian strains have a similar energy to them but they're also disorienting - the "trippy" buzz. The GT x Oldtimers was very energetic but it felt like it drained my mental energy - "thinned" me out - twirly eyed - kinda "twitchy". It makes me feel like I'm constantly overlooking stuff - harder to keep my mental bearings. It's more challenging than soothing. Carnival has enough of something to it to keep the high "kind". That's a word that resonates with me - some strains are kinder than others. The Brazilians are like that, along with a lot of the Colombian/Mexican/Thai crosses. You get the energy from the Thai and Lumbo, and the Mexican moderates it enough to be kind.
See, I'm into the rush. I want to tap a rush a few times an hour when I smoke. Rush, fade, rush, fade. With most strains I can't do that. The stone will sap me too much. I've never really identified with the "no ceiling" idea, but it's probably related to that. They say when you smoke some strains you just get higher and higher. I don't, really. I get "there", wherever that is, like banging on the ceiling. So each time I hit it, I'm there again - bang, bang, bang. If I try that with most strains, I become uselessly tired. With Carnival, the rush fades, the humming stone sets in, and then everything clears and I feel bright and right. I find myself thinking of things to do while I'm stoned. And if I want another rush, I know that it won't slow me down.
It feels like there's an undesirable cannabinoid missing from Carnival, or some extra something that feels kind. Amy has been wondering about CBG. And Carnival also has the terp profile that I prefer - light sweet lime/berry with a fuel backnote, so that might be part of it.
I have a Raspberry Diesel (Cherry Afghan x Sour Diesel) in bloom, so I'll finally have a chance to see how SDs compare.
If you wrote a book, I'd buy it.
I LOVE dissecting the highs, and figuring out what it is that makes the ones I like 'tick'. I'll second the idea that CBG may be part of the 'kind' feeling--I have a Super Lemon Haze plant that happens to put out a decent amount of CBG, and everyone that tries it likes it. Nice, energetic, 'kind', high.
