GratefulBud's Summer 2023 Outside Grow

Supposed to be a hot weekend! :thumb:
Yep.
Going to be a challenge keeping my drying box at 60˚F and 60%RH.
I'm using an LG portable air conditioner inside a box 6ft x 3ft x 3ft tall. The fans runs constant, but when the compressor turns on the fan runs at a higher speed. Does a good job at keeping temps around 60˚. Humidity is going to be a challenge.

I'd like to pick your brain (and @Carcass ) if that's OK.
  1. Seems like a lot of air movement inside the box especially when the compressor is on. What would be too much?
  2. If the RH gets high I open the door a bit and that brings it down. I placed a small piece of swamp cooler filter on the intake vent. If the RH gets too low I'm going to spray the filter with water to raise humidity, and / or place a damp towel inside the box.

Anything to watch out for?

It's really hard to control the environment outside even with an AC. Night and day make for totally different issues to deal with.

Personally I feel like once you're hanging with fans on the volatile terpenes are going to float away with high or low airflow. I keep the fans on high when I'm trying to drive out the initial moisture and then slow them down as the buds dry to get to a week of hanging.

Unless that box is airtight, I don't think a wet towel is going to be enough if the RH drops as the warm front comes through.

Probably right.

Yeah I'm worried that the portable AC is giving too much airflow. I may place another panel in the middle separating the large compartment into two - with a gap of about 8 inches up high. This should keep the temps low but limit airflow onto the drying rack. Shit, I don't know.

A few more pics of the box and drying rack.

Either way it's a brilliant idea! What makes if perfect is a humidifier, dehumidifier, heat pump, and an inkbird controller. :)
Yep.
That would be my ultimate goal. I'll check to see how much all THAT stuff will cost.
Or I could just not grow 6 huge plants until I get a proper drying room set up. :laughtwo:

Plan was to give most away and let my friends dry in their home fridge. Turns out that is no longer an option (no longer has spare fridge). I've got several small patio fridges I can use but will not have enough room.

I was going to suggest putting a second box inside the big box- you'd get the benefits of the a/c without having too much air blowing on the weed ..but a wall would work just as well...

You need a walk in fridge for these harvests. See if Ralphs has an empty one you can use for a few weeks!
LOL!
Wait, I actually know someone who works at a market. Hmm. . . .

I like your thinking - thanks Carcass!

When I checked a while ago it was perfect - 59˚ and 55% RH. But too much airflow. Colas were swaying.
So I placed a piece of cardboard in the center. Splits the compartment into two with an 8 inch gap up high. Should stay nice and cold and have minimal airflow on the hanging colas (good).

Thanks Carcass!

I'll check again in a bit. If the RH goes much lower I'll need to add moisture with a damp towel or something.

You and your damn cardboard boxes. 🙄
Cardboard: Mankind's most underappreciated building material... 🤪
I remember helping a buddy break up brick just like that. Acapulco Gold. Was good shit.
Me too $60/1970- Mexican brickweed, it was shit...not good shit, just shit...
