Grandpa Likes To Squeeze Stuff: Solventless Extracts, Rosin, Pressed Here!

I am pressing some schwag gorilla glue a friend dropped off, or traded me. I got a zip and a half for a half of my stuff....no biggie or expectations, but it's nice to have a 6th strain.

At low temp in the rig I get a mouthful of banana, not what I expected.

Cue the jokes.

It's Sofa King good I am about to hit it again.

I hope that someone with more knowledge of concentrates can help me out a little better. We've only tried them several times. Some of the concentrates are chemical tasting and those unfortunately are the type my wife has tried. When I am looking at wax, shatter, crumble, butter, etc., how can I tell if its going to taste more chemical like or more like the flower itself? Also, I've seen distillate with live resin come in flavors as well which perhaps she'd like more. I'm more concerned about the effect than the taste but the wife is concerned about both. Have a great day everyone!

The chemical taste is due to the solvent used to extract the oil, or chemicals used in growing. To avoid the chemical taste due to solvents you need something commercially prepared using CO2 extraction, or a rosin press. You can also extract your own using ethanol (drinking alcohol) and ensure that is totally evaporated. You do not want concentrates with a green cast to them as these contain a lot of chlorophyll.

The best way is always to make your own. Pressing, and CO2 don't decaroxylate the extracts, and tend to have the most terpinoids and flavinoids. They are probably THE best for dabs. You can decarboxylate them and make butter, tinctures, oils, or creams with them. You can use them without decarboxylation, if you want the acids such as THCA. You can even re-press the extract to get almost pure THCA for a dab hit like no other. Using ethanol, or another liquid solvent usually will decarboxylate the oil in the process. It results in less terpinoids and flavinoids as many are destroyed in the process.

The biggest advantage of extracting yourself is that you can mix strains, and extracts to get exactly what you want.

I went with a rosin press to do my own extractions. Here in Canada 97% un-denatured ethanol is next to impossible to purchase. You may be able to get some from a medical supply company. If not you'll need to illegally distill your own. This, and that I'd get into trouble if I had all that high proof alcohol around are the two main reasons I went with the press.

I want a press without the bill. :lot-o-toke:

Yes, they're not cheap. It cost me close to $1000 CAD for the Dabpress 10 ton driptech, and other bits and pieces. If you have access to a machine shop you can probably make one for half that. A decent reflux column still from Brewhaus America to distill your own high proof alcohol will run about $800 CAD delivered to your door. Once again if you have the skills and access to the tools, you can build one for half that. The good news is that you can use it for your extraction as well. This is safer than letting that alcohol evaporate into the air, as you can recover it for re-use.

It is so hard to pick one out nowadays since there is so much Ali Baba crap out there.

Some of the Alibaba stuff is crap, others are actually quite good. That's where I sourced the parts for my light.

I really recommend Dabpress products. They are well made. You can save by getting just the plates, or caged plates if you already have a hydraulic press. Dabpress also has three and six ton models using an included bottle jack. I chose the ten ton and Strongway Hand Pump with Pressure Gauge so that I could consistently get the same pressures while extracting the rosin.

I think I'll grab a 3 or 6 ton from them sometime soon.

Not much i can add to what @Old Salt said....

I will also add that I have been pressing my strains for about 6 months now. Sativas in my experience, or some of the hybrids that lean that way can have a fruiter profile. When I get to higher thc indicas, like afghani, or purple TW, etc I tend to get a more dank weed taste.

My wife tends to like the sativas with the fruits better.

FWIW a couple of us have Nugsmasher models....they work great, are US assembled, lifetime warranty that I have used where they paid for return shipping, and a trade-in program. Not the cheapest way...but they work well and are pretty compact units.

I did not care for my 3 ton as my habits changed to using more rosin vs flower....so I upgraded to a 12 ton....very happy with that decision. pressing 1/8 pucks gets old.

Thanks so much @nobodyhere. I'll check out the Nugsmashers and also I really appreciate the details on fruity sativas.

I can’t add much @SlyTown420 to what @Old Salt and @nobodyhere already posted. I find that lower temp rosin dabs can also change the flavor considerably. I’ve experimented significantly with homemade extractions and squeezed bud is by far the best...at least for me.

I do love to squeeze things though... :cheesygrinsmiley:

This is where my pucks go. The jar lives in the freezer until I’m ready to do an alcohol extraction. Looks like that may need to happen soon.

Hey no one warned me rosin last so long. Just thought anyone interested should know.
Nice return GT! And you get a wash.
I might pull some old pucks and try a second squeeze today.

I love rosin. Less smell, less mess, more bang. It doesn’t last long around me, but it lasts longer than bud does. I smash 10 grams and that normally lasts me 6 or 7 days if nobody stops by. 10 grams of weed can be gone in just a few days with just me hitting it.
