GG7's Indoor/Outdoor Grows!

YOU'RE the one with the killer Clearex recipe! I want to personally thank you for that. You took liquid gold in a bottle and showed us how to use basic materials to make it for less. I liken this to arriving at their expensive liquid gold by transmuting other materials that cost much less. You have renewed my faith in alchemy my friend!

Purely comic relief, but that's how I feel. I am in the process of ordering the ingredients as we speak.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Okay, to be fair, 15 bucks ain't much, but if a simple recipe can make it for less, or make MUCH MORE for the same price... I'm all for that.

Question, for a hydroponic system, instead of Sodium Benzoate, could one use Sodium Metabisulfite(SMS), or Potassium Metabisulfite (KMS) as preservative instead of Sodium Benzoate? These are primarily used in wine making to prevent wild yeasts, bacteria and such, and to sterilize equipment.

Awesome!! :thumb:

Thanks Man! :)

Glad that you found my dissection/recipe useful! My goal was to allow folks without a lot of $$ to still be able to flush their plants properly at the tail end of the harvest process. I don't deny the Clearex folks their profits, but 3000% mark-up on sugar water is a bit steep for patients on a fixed income. ;)

As far as a preservative.... I don't think it would matter much. The whole purpose of the Benzoate is to prevent bacteria from devouring the sugar water if left at room temp. Can't think of any solution more attractive to microbes than a heavy concentration of glucose and sucrose! LOL! I still have a half quart from my original batch that remains clear and totally viable after more than a year at room temp. Just make sure that the preservative you use is engineered to be held within a liquid.

Sodiium Benzoate was developed by the soft drink industry.

P.S> Personally...I HATE the smell of Clearex. Don't know what they add to the active ingredients to give it that medicinal smell, but I can't help but wonder if that additive could make its way into the plants and alter their smell/taste.

Obviously, my home made version is FREE of any artificial scents that could negatively effect the natural qualities of the final product. ;)

Big Photo Update!

So there ya have the latest progress shots. As you can see, everything is in heavy flower mode at this point and we are on track for an early October harvest.

We will post our next update in a couple of weeks as we get closer to harvest time. :thanks::Namaste:

Beautiful!

I just got caught up, but these got buried fast as the last post a couple of pages back, seems too much of a shame, so hope you don't mind me bumping them forward. Love your outdoor grows. Good luck with the seeding project - I am just now growing out some seeds I made from a couple of grows back. I crossed at Jack the Ripper with an OG Kush, and a Deadhead OG, and I can't wait to see how they turn out. :)

Hey XL and Don Paul! :)

Thanks for checking in! That cross sound interesting XL! good luck with that! :thumb:

Coming down to the home stretch now. Just hoping that I can get everything harvested before the first rains come.

So far, things look pretty dry through September, so we are probably going to be good for everything with the possible exception of the GDP which needs a few extra weeks to make the color change in early October.

Glad to hear it! I always check any new meds with the Drug Interactions Checker on the web. Can't tell you how many times I have found MAJOR interaction issues with a new med compared to what I am already taking. I tell ya...Doctors today seem pretty clueless about what to prescribe and seem to often fail to take into account what other meds we are already on, and what kind of negative reactions a combination can produce.

Glad you are OK now! I strongly advise to be proactive with any new med. Look it up on the web and make sure it doesn't pose any negative reactions with stuff you are already taking. ;)

As for the year break for next season...THANKS! I've been growing this stuff for the last several years now, and as I said, I have gotten so much product on hand that it is kind of silly to continue to grow when I already have more than I need for at least two years! Simply based on how much harder it is becoming to maintain everything. The old ticking clock of life you see... ;)

It will be nice to have a break and hopefully by the time the 2014 growing season comes around, I will be ready to give it another go with the seeds I am going to end up with after this harvest is done. :)

My bad GG7.....they were so fired up about them...I didn't check em out. Enjoy yourself. :smokin2::smokin2:

I will post another update in a week or two as we get closer to harvest day.

Stay tuned! :)

im trying to find a good purple strain thats not auto so i can get some decent yield, ive got 2 blueberry autos but both are in flower and wont be getting much from them, so im trying to find some decent purple strain that produces purple buds with little care, its getting cooler here so the cool night time temps wont be a problem, i have read several times that most strains will turn purple if given cool night time temps but im just not getting this, im getting no purple what so ever, im hoping these autos turn purple and give me some purple buds, i was thinking the gdp might be worth a try.

Hey, good looking outdoors! They're really coming along nicely... They're starting to suck nutrients from the fans already, damn! Is it getting cooler there already?

Hey Jandre!

Yep! We have been getting into the low 50s at night now. Last few nights were 50 degrees exactly. By harvest time, we will probably be hitting the low to mid 40s and possibly high 30s by the first week of October. That's why I time my GDP harvest for that point cause they need those cold nights to do their thing with the purple. :)

Hey Don Paul...

The genuine GDP strain will definitely turn purple around week 8-10 if subjected to cold overnight temps of about 45 degrees F or colder. This needs to happen repeatedly for at least a week to get them started with changing color. It dosn't matter how warm they get during the day. As long as they get those cold nights the real GDP definitely turns purple.

I have no experience with any auto strains, so can't help you there. All the various purple strains I have grown here have all stayed green until the last few weeks, but change color right on schedule as long as we get the cold overnights.

Hope that helps! :)

Hey bro, been afk for awhile, I will catch up and update you as soon as I get reliable internet.
Peace and God bless.

Hey Man!

Great to hear from ya! Was wondering where you had gotten to! ;)

I've been busy as you can see. As I mentioned a few posts back, this will be my last harvest for awhile since I will not be growing any Cannabis in 2013. I need a break from all the day to day work involved. Will be scaling back our other gardening projects too. Might even take a vacation and actually go somewhere next summer!

:thumb:

Hope you can get your internet to behave!

We just got news on Friday that our local DSL service has just started offering a 12M down 1M up service plan! Gonna look into upgrading tomorrow. We have been stuck with 15 year old broadband speeds here in the mountains for what seems like an eternity! Looks like we might finally be coming into the 21st century around here! ;)

Now maybe I can actually give that Netflix streaming service a try again! It was unuseable last time we checked it out, due to our horribly slow speeds here.

Anyway.... Looking forward to hearing what you have been up to!

Talk to ya then and thanks for touching base! :)

thanks mate, ill give it a try with the autos, they are both in flower now and the pack i got them in clearly shows nice purple buds, so im hoping to get some colour to them, i dont expect anything as good as the pics i got with the seeds but any colour would be a good start and give me something to work on. i wont be getting much off these autos but they are quick to grow and i can do tests with them such as cool temps, thanks for the advice and ill see what i can do

Wow we are going to miss ya next year goose. Your plants look great as always. I cant wait so see the turn purple again.
I may have some purple this year if weather permits. I have aquired two seeds out of some very nice purple bud called the purps.
I really dont know for sure the actual genetics but it doesnt matter when it looks like this.

Hi GoldenGoose7,

How you been my brotha, sorry I have not been around often to make many comments, but I have been watching all of your photo updates, just been to busy to comment!

Great looking season you've been having! I have a question for you though.

With the GDP, I planted my last seed of GDP this season, and although our temps have not gotten that low at night here. The leaves of the fan leaves and now the leaves coming out of the buds, the underneath of them is all purple? Did yours do that? The top of the leaf is still green but the bottoms have started turning purple? I had this happen with my Blackberry Kush that I grew last season.

Sorry to hear that you won't be with us next year! I hope you enjoy your time off from growing and I can't wait to see you make your return brotha! Don't be a stranger though! feel free to just drop in and say hi to all of us here at :420:! We won't mind! I PROMISE!

:Namaste:

You have one fine grow going.Wish i had been watching all summer. But i will be following for sure from here on out.Your girls are farther along than mine. Don't know if it is strain or location. I'm thinking strain. :bravo::thumb::cheertwo::high-five::circle-of-love::goodjob:

Hey Man!

Thanks for the kind words and support! I know that you guys are busy, so no worries about just "lurking" my journal and not posting. ;)

As far as the color behavior of your plants... Today in 2012, there are all sorts of varieties of "purple" Cannabis out there. Far more than even 5 years ago! Each genetic version tends to have different properties when it comes to producing that purple color. From what I have researched, the purple color is actually a chemical cocktail produced by the plant to resist freezing. Think of it as a form of "anti-freeze". Some purple varieties produce these pigments as a matter of course and don't need the weather conditions normally associated with this change to exists in order to change color.

Much of this is a result of breeding by growers to amplify this natural trait and make it far more dominant than it would normally be in the wild. The GDP that I grow which is the original "Ken Estes" strain, turns purple at the end of the flower cycle if the plants sense temps approaching the freezing point. Since GDP is native to Northern California's higher elevations in the Sierra Foothills and higher, it will start to react to low temps in the 40s. My plants do not seem to make the change until they are at the end of their flower cycle. So, if we get some unusually cold lows early in the season, the plants will stay green unless they are at week 6-8 of the flower cycle.

Since I grow mine outdoors, these low overnight temps begin to commence at the exact same time in the plants flower cycle where they are predisposed to react to it. (Mid-September through Early October) Basically, my outdoor growing conditions here are nearly identical to the natural conditions of the GDP's parential ancestors, so they naturally begin to make the color change right on schedule. This is their way of protecting themselves against potential freezing conditions at the end of ther life cycle.

I guess you could say that they are trying to give themselves as much time to finish growing out their seeds as possible, before the first snows come, and the mother plant succumbs to the elements. ;)

EDIT: I should mention that as of this post, NONE of my outdoor GDP has shown any signs of purple yet. I expect that they will start changing color in the next 2-3 weeks provided that our overnights start getting down into the low 50s high 40s. This is already starting to happen as of this last week, but we keep getting these mini heat waves lately which are prolonging the more summer like overnight lows.

=================

Anyway... Thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to check in! I am always happy to hear from the 420 Mag staff! You guys are doing a fantastic job with this site and the nurturing of this growing community of great people!

I will definitely stay connected to this site even though I won't be growing anything next season. IN a way, this will give me more time to participate in other groewer's journals and add my two cents to the various discussions! :)

I see it as a good thing! :thumb:

Thanks again for checking in!
