Fuzzy1981's Fox Farm Ocean Forrest Northern Lights 2019

i would like to hear about the two liter bottle method, always interested in new ways of doing things. yeah most summers we don't even bother putting in the air conditioning. in fact i haven't put in the window unit in about five years now. usually we wait till it gets dark out open up the windows and put some fans in to cool off the house and before it gets light out we'll close the windows and draw the mini blinds. i think the warmest my basement has gotten is 76 degrees in the summer.

The two litre simply replaces the humidity dome. I can get further into the taking and making of the clones. Have you made clones before?

no, this is only my second grow. my first one was about fifteen years ago. and i had no idea what i was doing, i grew three female plants and got about an eighth of an ounce off of all three. but man did it taste good. i would liken it to smoking a strawberry. don't know what type it was, just some bag seed. it was an outdoor grow before it was legal, grew it in my back yard. i still have one of the leaves i put inbetween some clear tape to keep it from falling apart. whatever you could tell me about cloning would be much appreciated.

Alright settle in... :rollit:

First thing you gotta do is decide which or how many cuttings you want. In this case we'll just go with the one. Cut her as close to the branch as possible and put the cutting into a glass of water with 1 drop of superthrive. Leave her there. Grab a rooting cube, I like root riot and put in the water too.

Grab your clear solo cup, you'll want to put some drainage / breather holes into the bottom of the cup, i've started putting a few in the sides as well. Just 4 around the middle. Allows for more 02 to get into the soil and help root development.
Fill the cup with soil or medium half way. Mykos is a fungal network that grows in the soil and helps the plant with nutrient up take. It's not too expensive and you don't need a lot, mix it into the soil. You can mix in perlite or vermiculite if you want, it will further help with the drainage and air available for the roots. Yes they need air, it's a balance.

I like to use root riot cubes for cuttings. I put them in some water with superthrive (1 drop to 4 ounces water). After I've got everything mixed up and in the cups I keep the cutting under the water and make another 45 degree cut just below her lowest node.

Making the cut under water prevents air bubbles from getting into the stem. From here I go straight to the clonex. Put some in a shot glass and use that. Don't dip into the bottle, you 'could' contaminate the bottle (I've never had a problem tho...). Then it's into the Rooting Powder, yes I use two root stimulators (separate container again). Gently set the cutting down. Remove the Root Riot from the h2O and squeeze out the excess so the root cube is damp, NOT SOAKING WET. Push the cutting into the root cube, you'll want to try and have at least 2"s of the stem into the Root Riot if possible. Enough of the cutting so it can hold itself up.

This is where techniques will really start to differ. I've been making clones for a while now. My first year and a half all I did was clone. In the picture below you'll notice I have the medium in the red solo cups. I recommend you use clear. Many members have started to use clear cups so you can see the root development, it's a pretty cool idea.

Place your rooting cube with the cutting already inserted into your solo cup and fill in around the cube. The soil should just cover the top of the cube. Set your cup to the side and grab your two litre bottle. Make sure you have the cap and leave it one the bottle, TIGHT. Grab a knife or whatever cutting implement you're comfortable with and cut the two litre just below where the top of the solo cup will be. Make sure to clean out all the previous contents and use some h2o2 to clean the inside of the bottle.

Now place the solo cup into the bottom of the two liter. Grab that water with the little piece of stem in and water the clone a little, get the medium wet but not soaking. You'll want just a bit of water to come out the bottom of the cup. I just leave it in there. Grab the top of the two liter and make sure you kept the cap on tight. Spray some water into the top and then tape it back in place. I keep the two liters in my grow tent but you can put them in the sun. You'll need to keep them around 80 degrees, an adjustable cloning mat is between $10-20.

After 24 hours loosen the cap, just a little bit. No, more than that. No that's too much. Here, let me do it..

Ok after 48 hours loosen the cap even more and at 72 take it off completely. After 7 days take the clone out and you should be rockin. Of course this took me some practice to refine but I gotta be honest. The guy at the LHS told me how to do it and it's been working ever since.

You can do it, give it a try!

The pictures don't go exactly with the words, but you should be able to put it together.

h202 is hydrogen peroxide right? heh sorry it's been almost 20 years since my last science class. i actually have a seedling matt, i think thats about the same right? sorry about the sporadic questions, i have been typing them down as i have been reading your post. my last one is this. i don't know when im going to go over to the flowering stage. my plants are in a three gallon pot (thirstly awaiting transplant to a five gallon) and they are about 10 inches tall. im not sure when im going to flip the switch to flower. i have a new gorilla tent coming that is 6'7" so they have some time to grow, and i know that when i flip the switch there going to grow about twice there size. but what i don't know is how long it is going to take for them to reach that height, to when i want to start to flower under a 400 watt m.h. light. and how long it will take to veg a cutting in the same grow room for it to be able to produce more than what it would if i left it on the plant. sort of a cost benefit analaysis. im not trying to talk down cloning it's just that im new to growing and need some one to walk me through the finer points of.. well pretty much everything . basically im just asking so i can understand fully what im doing before i do it.

also thank you very much for taking the time to type out the post to teach me about cloning. i appreciate it. there is a lot to take in with this plant, and the many ways of growing it. from medium to fertilizer, to lighting and so on. and any in depth explanation to any of these helps make things a good bit easier. if there is one thing i could have in advance of this first grow. it wouldn't be bud i could harvest, it would be experience i could gain. :Namaste:

You can clone until the 3rd week of flower, if you want to. I understand about not being set up for clones. It's actually easier that you think. If you're interested I can tell you about my two litre bottle method. It real simple and you can keep the clones in your tent too. About 72 hours ago I pruned back my Berry Bomb. I had at least 5 good cuttings I just wasn't sure about. I put them into a small glass of water. They are still alive and doing well. I may poach one more to keep, but I've already got plenty of plants growing and I just popped another seed (Trinity Kush, Emerald Triangle, Seedsman). Plus I got two autos in the dirt waiting to pop and grow tappers.

Cloning is easy, try now when it doesn't matter. Then when it does you got some experience. If you do decide to keep that top, make a hole for the light to get down to her.

Man that snow sounds like it sucks! Where I live we get the summer time heat, 115 is about our summer average temp. Tough to keep the plants happy when it's that hot outside! Imagine opening your front door and feeling the heat wave just blast you in the face, like from an over! That's summer where I live...
35 below is our low for this time of year. it is a 150 degree difference between your hottest and our coldest . let's find a middle ground really soon :)

I believe your seedling mat will work, remeber 80 degrees & yes on the h202, HP. Once the clone has started to develop roots she’ll be wants nutes just like her momma. When your clone becomes rooted it will be at the same stage as when cut. She’ll start to grow fast so be ready. After the solo cup, go into your final container, and water like you would any ither plant, around the outside to force root structure and development. As the plant grows adjust accordingly. The clone will grow faster than if on the plant. If youre not planning to flower for a while she’ll be fine. If your final pot size for the mom is five then go 3 for the clone and flip same time.

Thsts Ph@$&n cold man! You must be way up north!

If you cant share knowledge it dies with you! Lookin great Fuzzy!

Girls are looking great! -35 is nuts. Never experienced anything like that. Couldn’t even imagine. Clones are easy if you’re interested. Those directions are great and very similar to how I used to cut mine. :thumb:
ok so i asked you earlier about how long after transfer from a three gallon to a five gallon pot, with fox farm dirt. i could go without fertilizing. you said seven days. when i transplant what are your thoughts of fertilizing when going to a pot over double the size with new soil? i have seven gallon pots on the way now. will putting it in this much new dirt increase the time before i fertilize from the original week extra? also what should i be looking for on the leaves that will let me know what it's hungry for and when? im not looking to rush it with fertilizer. just looking to find the right timing like shifting gears on a car. my critical mass plant is still having the leaf tips turn down. making me think that it's still getting more nitrogen than it needs. basically im still trying to figure out how to read the leaves.

ok, so i have finally got a bit of down time to update whats going on. i have just recieved my 2'x4'x6'7" gorilla grow tent. i also got a vivosun heat mat 4'x20" with digital thermostat combo. 2 2'x2' door mats from the dollar tree to put under the new grow tent. to help keep a little bit of insulation underneath it, and make it so the heat mat doesn't have to work so hard. also doc buds fertilizer pack has arrived.

A general rule is that we get 1 month for each gallon—3 gallon pot good for up to 3 months. I uppot once I know the roots have filled the container and created a nice ball that will keep form when I pull it. Signs I look for are roots popping out of the drainage holes and frequency of watering. For my final pot, 5 gal is my minimum for no reason other than that’s how I was trained. I just moved up to 7gal because I’m trying to grow a monster sized plant right now. If you have the space, larger container is better. I think your plan to wait a week is good. I would begin light feeding after that at about 1/2 strength and then jump into following the schedule. I think you already have the equipment to adjust your ph, I would for now with feedings just as a means to keep things running smooth.

alright sounds good i'll wait a bit longer. i'll take some pics of the nutes i got from doc bud. and the bag of, im assuming dirt? it's a bag of dirt that im sure has more significance than just dirt. but the instructions that comes with it doesn't mention it so im not sure what it is.
