First Grow In Over 20 Years! Northern Lights Under 600W LED

The stuff we smoked in the 70s with the seeds and stems still had higher levels of CBD in it which tempers the paranoia and anxiety that comes with some high THC low CBD strains. In the 80s they started breeding CBD out of strains as folks wanted more and more THC.

Pinene is a specific terpinoid to avoid if anxiety is an issue for you, as are pure sativas generally.

And if you do ever feel anxious from weed, smell and chew a peppercorn or have either CBD oil or a high CBD strain on hand you can hit to knock down the anxiety.

That is good news Shed because I have a strain for my knees that is very high in CBD growing right now and I have some Cannatonic in veg which is supposed to be one of the best pain relievers that is also high in CBD. Hopefully that will get rid of the feeling of anxiety I get but I am hoping as my plans get more ripened that feeling will diminish.

Besides monitoring the trichome’s I decided that I will make small oil batches as I go to see how each stage feels as well as looks. I just took a sample from each plant and will let these dry for a couple days and then test them. Thanks for the peppercorn trick also; definitely worth a try.

New York here...hated winter, moved to Los Angeles. Nuff said!

Being halfway through winter here in Ontario dreaming of being in Los Angeles seems pretty sweet!

I feel you Homie. I don't like the anxiety effects caused by consuming cannabis either. But I don't think you should compare an extract to a nug. Extracts always make me little anxious no matter which form they are in. Space cakes or other food with cannabutter, charas, BHO, earwax etc... But edibles cause lot more anxiety compared to other extracts.

Besides extracts, a great majority of sativa hybrids are also making me real real anxious. It is not a huge problem for me but I feel an alerted buzz instead of the chill effects of indica leaning strains. I am in my late twenties so I have no idea about the weed in 70's or 80's but knowledgeable smokers say that weed is definately stronger now. Of course by means of THC.

And about my SSH comparison... First I must say that it is my favourite sativa. I smoked Dinafem Super Silver, Royal Queen's Shining Silver Haze and of course Greenhouse Seeds' Super Silver Haze. Royal Queen's take on SSH is real real crap. It is fairly potent but it is very very different than the original. Dinafem's take on SSH was awesome. But the real thing for me will always be the one from GHS. Just like their White Widow is the best available. I don't know about the auto versions though.

Apparently in extra two weeks, sativa buds can gain a lot more mass. That was the main thing I wanted to test back in the day. But we figured quickly that these nugs had different effects. Then I did my first research about trichomes and internalised the theory.

I was watching GHS grow video about SSH and they measured very high levels of CBN for this particular plant. Still, the cloudy plant provided a very uplifting high. I think when you harvest your SSH with mostly cloudy trichs, you will get a perfect ratio between CBN and THC. Amber plant provided a nice high as well. None of these plants made me sleepy. Maybe slightly more sleepy on amber. Amber one made me gain a fair amount of weight. I was eating constantly because it was making me so hungry. Considering the SSH case, I can say that an amber SSH bud can treat your lack of appetite but not insomnia. But you will observe different effects for NL for sure since it is a strong indica.

My main point is, do you want a jar full of buds that is only dedicated to make you go to sleep besides some negative effects? These negative effects include several things. Amber makes you go to sleep easy but it also makes you get up in a bad shape. I always have trouble getting up in the morning when I smoke amber nugs. Cloudy plants doesn't have that effect, at least in my case for last several grows. Can you afford eating more or can you control this fake appetite? If you are okay with these effects, then you can go for amber. If you want a real chilling indica, I suggest turning the lights off right now.

My Pineapple Chunks are harvested with trichome color distribution similar to your NL. It is a very very uplifting strain and almost perfect for me because it doesn't have that anxiety effect at all. The high is so chill that it really treats minor depression. Basically you don't give a sh.t about your problems. I just smoke it and work on my projects or do professional work. It makes everything more convinient but slow, just the way I want them to be. When I want to sleep, I roll a slim full green joint and it knocks me out in 15-20 minutes for sure. If I smoke something like that in the morning or afternoon, I don't go to sleep because I am not yet spent or exhausted. PC is an indica leaning strain so harvesting it with mostly cloudy trichomes on, I preserved the characteristic effects for this particular strain. Also I can use it for sleeping because it is indica. I couldn't do both with SSH's no matter when I harvest them. You have a pure indica strain and that will definately make you more sleepy than my PC's due to its characteristic high.

Long story short, I wouldn't wait much longer if I were you. Or I would go extract some nice hash just for sleep. Keep the remaining buds with milky trichomes. Any homemade hash can knock us down if we roll and smoke it the right way. Northern Lights shouldn't cause too much anxiety when consumed in normal amounts. I smoked it long ago and it is coded "chilled and potent" in my memory.

I was afraid that extracts or making oil may cause more anxiety but I do have mostly Indica strains so hopefully that will help. Also I am thinking if I let my plants mature a bit more hopefully that will help. I put up some more pics and I don’t think my plants are as far along as I thought. These pics are just of calyxes and they don’t seem Amber at all with some clear also.

Thanks for the tip about gaining weight with Amber because at my age it’s easy enough to put it on so that’s a pretty good argument against it if it doesn’t really promote sleep that much. I think I will harvest most of my plants when they are good and cloudy and maybe leave 20% to go Amber.

Thanks a lot for the information Triangle Cheese; it was really helpful. With my Northern Lights and high CBD strains and harvesting early and late it looks like I have a lot of experimenting to do which should be a lot of fun and interesting.

I was out showeling snow.... Again...
This IS a time when I wish I had a man in my life :rofl:

Yes, despite all our faults we are handy for a few things, lol.

Not much to report from the grow room this week. I am waiting for my test samples from each of my flowering plants to dry out a bit so I can make some test oil. I am hoping I can harvest within the next week or two because my veg closet is getting a little crowded.

The next generation is looking pretty healthy. The front plant is my Cannatonic for my bad knees which has been quadlined along with the plant in the back left which is a Yummy strain and the plant on the right in the back are my Northern Lights clones and they seem to be going crazy. I am going to let my quadlines go vertical now to keep up in height with the clones. So the next generation looks good so far. Now it’s just a waiting game till harvest time.

Looking awesome Homer!

Thanks, Pennywise. I am being really careful with my pH with this next generation too making sure reading both the water I add and my runoff. So far so good. The runoff from my budding plants is around 6 pH too so that is a big improvement from around 5 I was getting before I flushed. I am adding water around 6.5 pH to get the runoff within range. Hopefully, that system of balancing the water I add and runoff will keep me in range.

Next round is gonna be killer...I mean, just look at it!
:thumb:

Fingers crossed buddy!! I am pretty hopeful because despite all my pH problems in my first run I still have good sized buds so hopefully this time with my pH dialed in I should do even better. Thanks again for the advice on flushing and getting me back on track.

Keep doing what you’re doing, it’s working!

Well at this point my previous plants looked healthy so I am not out of the woods yet but with a decent pH meter hopefully I will be a lot more successful. I learned sometimes taking the cheap route is more expensive, lol.

That's true, but no need to go overboard the other way, so keep that in mind. Lots of workmanlike tools are just a step up from the cheapest and do exactly what we need them to do. And I have no doubt you will bring this grow to a great finish.

I don’t think I will go overboard because my natural cheapness keeps me in pretty good check. I think I will have a very successful finish but as someone once said it take a village to grow a plant….. lol.

You always get what you pay for

In this case for sure! The difference between the $20 piece of junk I was using and the one I have now is night and day.
