First Grow - Bag Seeds - Germinated July 27 2015

Update: Mary - day 49; Carol - day 51

This may be the last time you'll see the girls photographed like this. Gotta check my notes but I think these will get nutes later today or I might go with straight water but I'll be placing the screen up after next watering. Plants are 10 1/4 inches and the cabinet might allow another 10 inches with lights all the way at top. I keep hearing about the stretch when 12/12 is started that I'll have to plan for that. They will go under the screen this week so we'll see how that goes.

I'll add diatomaceous earth to see if I can get rid of the fungus gnats for good. They have a 30 day life cycle as I understand it. Pics are Carol first, then Mary.

Tent grow. These babies just please me so much and they just love the Mars Hydro LED. Seed cups still keeping me in suspense. Pics are JH, then WW.

So excited about the screen MagicJim. They fascinate me, and I've yet to try.

I fought with fungus gnats before I listened to more experienced cultivator's and top dressed with neem meal. The fungus gnats disappeared within days and have never returned. I was stunned. Powerfully smelling stuff though. Not for the faint of heart or anyone sensitive to strong odors. I like the smell myself. It's grown on me. Smells like something real and necessary.

I threw 6 in water. My objective is to find out if they are viable. Will they split? Who knows?

On the other topic, on the cab grow, I've decided to just push the girls just a little with nutes and my screen placement. I plan to flip to 12/12 around the end of September. If they aren't females I'll find out soon enough and then I can move on.

A sound plan my friend. :battingeyelashes:

For what it is worth. I tried to get some 5-10 year old seeds to sprout. Now it was just six seeds. And I was not being patient. I did get 2 to sprout to the surface. But they both died off right after sprouting. I dropped them in cups of water and waited for them to sink. Took forever. Maybe two days Later they all sank. After sinking, They immediately went into jiffy peat plugs and I got the 2 sprout about ten or more days later. Then my newer/fresh seeds, I have tried three, all sprouted at about the 72 hr mark after going into the peat plug. (Two bag seeds and one Ace seeds)

So my point or lesson learned . I wish I was more careful with the poor old beans. They might have lived.
As a disclaimer I don't take the growin too seriously. I am all about the adventure and having fun.
But I like to see the odd mystery seed come to life.
Rock on and don't do what I do/did. I am cheering for you.
Happy day.

I guess the only thing to do now will be a little cleanup type trimming and attempt to distribute branches above the screen.

The screen shots

View from down under. Screen is just wedged in. It's a tight fit so I'll just leave it that way without support from bottom.

I was looking at your screens rope material, it looks like butchers twine. I worry that it may harbor water and mold being that its an organic compound. We were just talking about it on another thread. The general consensus was inorganic material like 12 gauge wire or nylon string/rope. I am a newb but I am a passionate sharer of information. :Namaste:

It's a pretty thick multi-strand cotton string similar to yarn. It was what I had laying around in a tool box but I wanted something that wouldn't cut into the plant. It may attract some moisture but I'll be watering from below the screen.

I'm watching mold closely as I had to buy a dehumidifier last year. Mold spores are as common as dust so I've got a plan for it or PM whichever might attach first.

Good catch though. I appreciate it. Jim

May I ask what thread stoopingcrane? I'd like to listen in on that conversation, if you don't mind. Thanks.

Once as a young, foolish and very broke young woman I gouged my ankle open by dropping my moped on it. Ouch! Still hurts to remember that all these years later. Not nearly as much as the memory of a friend expertly stitching it back together in the kitchen, regaling me with tales of how he once stitched his own cheek back together.

Had he not used cotton thread I'd have healed with little more than a small scar. The clinic doctor who treated me later was suitably impressed with the stitchery. The scar is still rather small, but the memory of the infection lives on in a bolder stroke of pain. Organic materials are breeding grounds for life. At least you're aware of the possibilities and will be a watchful gardener.

I've only observed screens MagicJim, but I'm fairly certain the game is keep them below the screen until you have it filled and then let them come through. Forgive me if I'm jumping the gun and that's already your intent. My understanding is you kind of weave them along under the screen to spread them out over the widest surface. Once you have all your tops positioned underneath, then you flip the plant into 12/12 and watch the magic. See? You really DID choose the right user name for the hobby. You're going to feel very magical in a very short time.

This is what I tried with my 1St grow. Have a look at ganjazz. He scrogged a sativa. It was a monster and he made it look easy. Here is a link

Any reason you haven't tucked those tops under the screen yet? Just curious... Looking great MJ!

Hi Spitz...The objective is to get growth horizontal but somehow pulling the higher colas down doesn't really makes sense to me right now. I'm still concerned about head room space so it's inevitable that this probably has to occur but another way is to cut them so that branches under these can fill the screen. I'm also giving some thought to adding one CFL under the screen.

I'll do something soon. I read through a guy's entire SCROG grow yesterday and realized that this cabinet really isn't ideal for this. Jim

This is my favorite reference for a SCROG. there is no disputing Icemud's brilliance or his mastery of this technique. MagicJim, may I offer you what I consider the best on the site as a reference to your own attempts here.

I must say, I had a strong emotional response to pulling this up for your use. Since last I pulled this I've become closer to Icemud, and hearing his voice on this video caused a cascade of warm feelings. Sweet.

I hope this helps.
