First Grow - Bag Seeds - Germinated July 27 2015

Mary - day 47; Carol - day 49

I guess it would be important to note that I take these at lights on so that temps aren't up yet.

I keep inspecting but they haven't raised their boomers for me.

Seeds are also testing my patience

IMG_112737.JPG

How long have those seeds been in there now? I've had my own issues with germination and I'm coming to the opinion that the seeds we purchase are pasty wanna-bes next to what anyone on the site doing breeding of any sort creates. The difference in the appearance of the purchased seeds next to their home-grown cousins is shocking.

Yesterday, as I was looking at my own cups that'd been waiting for over a week, all I could hear was TOAST asking why I wanted to play with genetics that didn't even want to come to the party? Made me stop and think. And then I stopped waiting and pulled all the cups that'd been in there for more than a week. If anything's coming up it usually makes the appearance in 72 hrs time, although I like to wait at least a week. The seeds cost so damn much, you want to give them any opportunity.

I think we're letting the seed banks off the hook here. Seeds should be more vibrant than what we're seeing.

Sorry for the rant. It just spilled out. So how long have these two kept you waiting now?

Well...here is where my records could be a little better but it looks like I soaked in water beginning 9/8, went to paper towels 9/9 and placed in the solo cups 9/11. Both seeds had split and small beginning of root showing. I had previously germinated in Jiffy mix but this time I used my mix and planted them slightly deeper...perhaps 1/4 to 3/8 inch deep. Somehow I was thinking a little deeper and they would be a little stronger. I don't let cup dry and spray distilled water. Originally, I had these under CFL on top of my clothes dryer and moved them to tent on 9/13 where it's a little warmer. I wish I had x-ray vision. Jim

See here comment about up to two weeks: How do I germinate seeds?

It's frustrating, I know. I had four recently that I dropped into the holes with the beginnings of tap roots and they never broke the surface. Germination is still a bit of a struggle for me. I'm fairly certain that if they're not up at the end of a week you have to wonder about the viability. At this point I usually get antsy and go digging. Typically that only adds to the frustration though, since I usually can't find the seed. :laughtwo:

How long to you plan to wait?

You just introduced me to his journal and TOAST has already invaded my cultivator's brain. :laughtwo: I just heard him say something about plant way more seeds than you need to increase your odds. Problem is the seeds are so dear. This is why people are so intent on breeding their own. Hmmmm I wonder how long it will be before they drag me into breeding? I think they're already plotting.

Trying to laugh about this. I did smile. I'll probably just keep on treating them with a few sprays a couple times a day until they come up. Seems that we'll need the power of positive thinking here. Jim

I can do that MagicJim. I do that rather well. :battingeyelashes:

I can do this also, I am not as practiced as it as I would like to be, but I am going to give it the beans.....as it were:high-five:

That's the spirit! :high-five: I like you. Nice user name too. There's an early movement in my fitness routine that I dubbed "Crane Dance" because it reminds me of that mating dance cranes do. Every time I see you around the threads I'm reminded of both that favorite movement and the beauty of the dance itself. It makes running into you the most pleasing experience. :battingeyelashes:  Have a good day.

Whew! A little love fest going on here. It makes me happy.

Then there was this sack sitting in the bottom of the vault. Sack contained little baggies filled with seeds and sticks and I went through this stuff last night. I also had some seeds separated in little baggies and some in a 35mm film container and a vitamin bottle. Some of these might date back to the early 1970s. The vitamin bottle had a 1990 expiration. Anywho, I separated seeds from sticks and I'm gonna see if these will crack.

I tried again to get some macro shots and placing the loupe over the camera lens. This is Carole.

Patiently waiting. Jim

These are looking good MagicJim. Wow! How did you manage to get such consistency in your environment? I don't think I've ever seen readings like that LOL! Just a heads up, a happy plant likes a 5-15 degree temperature drop overnight, or lights out for those running lights at night to save energy costs or beat the heat.

How cool! Mystery bag seeds. :laughtwo: B A R (and many others) likes to use his for experimentation and everyone uses them for starting I think. Those ones going back into the 70s - I'd keep them separate, if you haven't already thrown them in together. Regardless, it gives you the thrill of the unknown, which can sometimes be the best. I have one running in my own tent right now that I saved from a bag of incredible stuff I bought for New Years. I hope it turns out to be female. Its the last unsexed plant in there. Somewhere there ps a video floating on sexing seeds. TOAST uses the method and has been surprised to have an almost 100% success rate in separating out female seeds, so you might want to talk to him about your seeds. I believe I have that video in my blog list if you wanted to go looking.

Never mind. I dug it out for you. :battingeyelashes:

Isn't the loupe fun and challenging? There's this tendency to have a slight tremor that comes with age and frustrates many of us seeking that fabulous close-up. Keep it up, you show promise, if only in the level of joyful curiosity. Are you just exploring new territory or looking for signs of sex? They won't show signs of sex until they're under 12/12 or less. If you want to accelerate their finish, you could consider going to 10/14 lighting. Dr. Ziggy is running his Z'ACE tent at 10/14, and look at what he's got going on in there right now! Envy!!!

This time next year, you're going to shake your head in wonder at how far you progress down the path to Master Cannabis Cultivator. Magic time soon Jim. You chose that user name well. :battingeyelashes: :hugs:

I don't know how that meter did that. Too phunny and I forgot to play Pick 3.

OK...so I was under the impression that they would give some sign of sex or pre-flower while in veg. Am I wrong here?

Can't wait to see if some of your ancient bag seeds come to the party, MJ :)

All the weed I buy these days is so damned CLEAN -- no seeds at all. I remember a time when seeds were pretty damned common ... (old person whinging). Mind you, it's good weed, now.

I know what you mean about how dear each seed is. If I had the money I would go nuts collecting different genetics -- I kinda want to grow everything I see :) That's how people get sucked into breeding, isn't it?

They may show signs of pre-flowering, but not sex. You won't be able to determine sex until you get them under 12/12 or less. It's a real thrill, opening the tent to find one went male on you overnight. They're sneaky that way. :laughtwo:

Those temperature variations are more in line with happy cannabis. :battingeyelashes: I'm looking at your dish of seeds wishing I still had the ziploc bag filled with them I tossed one year while Spring cleaning. * Groan * I remember saying "There's no reason to keep these lying around. It's not like we're ever going to grow or anything." Ahhh life. :laughtwo:

I threw 6 in water. My objective is to find out if they are viable. Will they split? Who knows?

On the other topic, on the cab grow, I've decided to just push the girls just a little with nutes and my screen placement. I plan to flip to 12/12 around the end of September. If they aren't females I'll find out soon enough and then I can move on.
