That's interesting. I've been reading about Indian landrace plants in preparation for growing some from Parvati valley, and they are described as doing the same thing. Large, wide leaves early on that narrow as the plants mature. They're also rumoured to have higher than average amounts of THCV.
I wonder if there's a common ancestor there?

I just had this exact thing occur in the previous grow. In the beginning she was squat, tight internodes, with big fat indica leaves and I was sure she was indica. When I flipped to flower she exploded in height and her new leaves became sativa like fingers. It was trippy to see indica leaves down low and sativa leaves up top.

I was disappointed, but the smoke was high quality and she produced well.

Highya Krissi,

Great looking stable. Of course Durban Poison is putting on a show!! I don't know how you do it! Have so many performers right out of the gate! So pleasing to look at! I noticed Amnesia has caught up to G-13 in height. She's coming on nicely, too. They all look very nice!! Maybe I will grow a NYC Deisel next year, just from your recommendation. Well, I think I'll leave it here and work on a DM. Happy Smokin'

I'm excited to see that!!!! When is it happening? Next year? Winter grow?
Not next winter, but the one after.
I have Purple Satellite planned for this winter, with an attempt at selfed/feminised seeds.

Outdoors growing the sun 🌞 is the most intense between 11:00am-3:00 pm this is the time you need to be careful about and the 90s is definitely not ideal but what I did was keep a wet towel around the pot and monitor the soil, container and leaves with a laser thermometer. Good luck Jersey. CL🍀 :thumb: :cheesygrinsmiley: Edit: If the leaves start to canoe move out of the sun.
Thanks so much Clover, I decided to not freak myself out with humidity in the 40s temps over 90 during the first few days. I brought her into the tent to hang out with the big girls while she toughens up a bit. Then my plan is to bring her out for an hour in direct sun and increase that time by an additional hour or two each day until she is I guess "hardened", that's the term, right? She will start in the shady flower garden in the backyard, gets enough light but not too much light and then I'll continue to "harden" her up by moving her into a more full-sun spot. If anyone thinks this is a stupid approach or has any other insight, please lmk. Here is Miss Bubblegum over the last few days. Today she is Day 4 above ground but the pictures have us through only yesterday at Day 3.

Her second trues are showing and that means, capfuls of Prescription Blend seedling feed are already being implemented. She got 3 cap fulls today and 2 yesterday.

Side note....I dropped her cup in the tent, had her propped up in not the best fashion. Luckily I just shoved the dirt back in the pot, vacuumed and low and behold, no harm done to her. Phew....
Mouth watering menu Krissi!
At first I was like, man Im glad he loves my assortment of plants. Then I realized, duh, he meant the food!
I haven't grown a Durban Poison. I have grown a KZN landrace cultivar, Double Wild Durban from @Lerugged's stable. It had the prettiest pink pistils. I grew it in a bag of soil outdoors. That one comes from an area called Kosi Bay. Worth a google if you have time. Kosi is paradise.
Going to google this after I get caught up on my PMs before I head back out to journal catching up! I want pink!!! Even though its like my least favorite color for clothes or decor, on our plants, its like one of my favorites!
All the plants are looking really good! I wonder if the auto would flower like that imagine just one nug
Thanks 12! Oh it would and Ive seen one nugged plants before. I don't forsee it happening here though, we are just as stifled as we were when she was 3 days old, now at 30 Days above. She's still outside though, didn't trash her....yet...

My Gorilla Glue Super Lemon Hazes both did this although they still maintained some of the larger fans, most of them narrowed come mid to late fflower. I LOVE all this cool unique stuff! And another Indica lover, be still my beating green heart

Yes! Heights are close in those 2, only off by 1 inch-measured them all this morning!

NYC Diesel-11.5 inches

Amnesia-17 inches

G -13-18 inches

Durban Poison-24 inches

what a range!

They all look very nice!! Maybe I will grow a NYC Deisel next year, just from your recommendation. Well, I think I'll leave it here and work on a DM. Happy Smokin'
Yes, please! I believe you will truly enjoy this hybrid!
Not next winter, but the one after.

I was so excited but that's ok, I can wait!!! Purple satellite is popular around here, another one I have yet to attempt. I'm looking forward to watching you grow both, Mel!

So hello all! Sorry I have had some hiccups at home and before getting back to journals or messages, I wanted to take what little time I had these last few days, to catch up on some journals, which I did and I'm feeling so good about it.

I'm going to bring you back in this journal through the 13th so we have a couple days here to view, pre and post feeds. From 2 days ago, just one shot of the tent from the side, Durban had just been fed and the others would be getting fed the next day in this particular picture. Bubblegum had just entered the tent at this juncture

Speaking of feeds, I'm old school and use a dry erase board, no computer logging for me. I have an area specifically for feeding and feed documenting and this is it below

After talking to @Danishoes21, who confirmed for me the possible extent of growth I may see in our Durban Poison. With that said, my plans are to flip this tent at 45 days. Today being Day 32 means we have less than 2 weeks til we transition to flower, holy crap!

Going to have to go out for another bag of FFOF in order to get these 4 up-potted from their 3gl water reserve homes to their final 5gl water reserve homes. The soil will be amended with all dry ingredients used in thr initial potting mix: bone meal, bat and seabird guano, earthworm castings, epsom salt and @DYNOMYCO.

I will be sure to do a thorough up pot post when the time comes since I missed posting the original up pot as this journal was started later than usual.

Let's look at the tent first as a collective then we will finish up with individual pics of the ladies.

I took these 2 shots from the Amnesia/Durban corner of the tent because I felt like you could truly see the impressive girth Uma has

Lastly, let's look at each girl. All beautiful in their own right.

Angelina is still making up for that lost time, starting to fill in some. It amazes me just how much she has grown regardless of her mutant start.

Geneva is your honor roll student, perfect in every academic sense of gardening. I look at her and think, you are the perfect child.

Marilyn proves awesome things come in small packages. She's like me but a plant, short but tough as nails. She probably has me on looks too, but that's OK.

Uma is something else. She is just so thick and tall and on the next Plant of the Day or 2, I HAVE to focus on her trunk. It is unbelievable, especially when I compare it to the others in the tank. I have never had a plant's main be so damn huge. The knuckles on them are just massive. Can't wait to get in there, take pics and show her off to you!

That's all folks! See you guys around the forum, off to respond to many messages! Have a great grow day all!

And another Indica lover, be still my beating green heart

Yep! I love a good downer 🤣 I’ve never been a big fan of stimulants, uppers, etc. They don’t do much of anything to me and usually leave me feeling weird and robotic. Coke, adderall, all that kind of stuff just makes my brain empty and unfocused. I do like caffeine though. I was diagnosed with ADHD as a kid and it seems to have stuck around in my brain chemistry. Most pharmaceuticals have the opposite intended effect.

It’s how I fell in love with opiates for a while. In the beginning I would take them and felt huge bursts of energy and would be able to focus. I could knock out days worth of work in hours. Unfortunately opiate tolerance builds pretty quickly and before I knew it I was taking 150 mg of oxycodone twice a day just to keep the withdrawals at bay. At those levels though, you start nodding off regardless of brain chemistry.

I got off that crap in 2017 and haven’t looked back. Nowadays a good strain is all I need

Keffka your story sound so much like me it is scary. Downers bring me up and speed brings me down. Been that way forever. But I have to take opiates in order to move but I watch how many I take also I can only get so many a month so in less I want to spend my life in a chair I have to schedule them.

I guess I just have an addictive personality because it was coke in the 80s. I think 🤔 It’s because I had access to so much of it too. Meth in the 90s when I was driving a truck. It’s a horrible drug and you’re addicited + don’t even realize it. And then we have opiates in the 2000s after being hit on my bike 🏍️. I just wish I had a 1/16th of all the money I spent on drugs. Smh CL🍀

Don't we all wish we had the money we spent on drugs. Now it is just pot and doctor prescribed drugs. Take that back pot is not a drug at least not to me.

Gotta do what you gotta do.. I will never judge someone else for the decisions they make for their own life. You have to live every day in your mind and body, not me, and I don’t know your reality.

I can see yours is taking on the same shape kinda, very dominant top cola but all the side branching are vigorously popping up.

That’s when she buds out see the leaf become narrow and more Sativa looking. The buds aren’t fluffy but dense compact. You will have fun with the Durban.

Hey Dani, this was the DP from DP I grew in 2021. Would this fall into the broad leaf pheno?

I would put it in there as “broad” leaf. Nice pheno btw. I can see she was very generous with those tops.

When I say broad leaf is because at the very genotype of this cultivar it’s supposed to be a heavy African Sativa landrace… what is still a mystery (for me) is what indica genotype they used to get that “fast flowering” trait in there that makes this Dutch Durban a great cultivar for breeding. Not to mention the high pest resistance pass by that landrace genetics.

I have seen other Durbans (seen online only) and they are very Sativa dominant phenos, rarely when talked about unaltered Durban landrace broad leaf pheno is mentioned. I think there is a South African grower around here that has grown Durban and maybe he can also chip in to see if has seen a broad leaf Durban before.

It’s a stable and reliable source of genetics for a breeding program.

To all of you, thanks for sharing your stories (I have been given my share of acronyms through the years), being open and honest aaaaand congratulations on your sobriety from the demon pills/drugs. Also for your anti-pharma lifestyle, as much as you can all control it with your own certain circumstances. I was there from 2016-2018, lost in some depression abyss. Whatever took me somewhere else and made me forget for 15 minutes was on my agenda to find throughout the day. It was a dark time and accountability was #1 priority for me. Always blamed this person or that this happened or that happened but what got me out was nothing short of just acknowledging that at the end of the day, it was my decision to do all this stupid shit. I also hate no, loathe, all of the prescription meds docs tried to have me on over the years. Find your weed and let it heal you I say

Is it Lerugged too? I know our friend @Carmen Ray is from that way also?

See!
Such healthy plants Krissi but I am now craving antipasti  I have told you I'm from Durban haven't I? It's going to be interesting to see what that plant does in stretch. NYC Diesel is a stunner. I agree with Capt. L. about your outdoor adventure.

Pretty much all I have been growing and breeding for last 4 years. Other Africans this summer though.
I've not come across a landrace with such broad leaves. I read when it was origionally collected it was crossed with something. There are different suggestions but I don't know. This was to reduce flowering and make it somewhat more commercial, with shortened internodes and denser flowers.
I have seen some landrace plants start indoors under weak light with broader leaves but as soon as it is in the sun they narrow up. Not as broad as yours though.
@StoneOtter is growing a pure one so you could compare. His is on the delicate side, they do get a bit stockier though.
Otherwise my journals are packed with different KwaZulu landraces so you can see plenty there.

I would have said the same thing… equatorial Sativa landrace that has broad leaves???

And now I am growing a landrace called Honduras by Ace seeds a reputable breeder… this Honduras pheno has broad leaf… I’m not sure why sell it as a “landrace”… it may have landrace genetics in it but far from being the actual Honduras landrace… same goes with the so called “Dutch Durban” it has broad leaf because they crossed it to flower faster…
It’s not traceable what genetics they used to cross their Durban.

I got a second pheno going it’s a cross of Dutch Durban and a Filipino Landrace… still got a broad leaf Durban x Filipino, looking just like the broad leaf mom… it’s crazy but they must have used some strong indica variety in there…

I’ve seen several Mexican landraces express some broad leaf traits but they don’t behave like indicas that’s for sure. This Dutch Durban has the internodes closer to each other, compact indica like buds, flowers in 70 days.

I haven’t touched any African landrace yet, I have been focusing on Central America and South east Asia.

I started calling the broad leaf Durbans Dutch Durban…

Do you think that's why? Cross breeding? I've had strains that show indica when a sativa and vice versa before but I didn't think it had anything to do with breeding. Hmmm....

Maybe one for you next Clover?!

So hello guys and gals, sorry it's been a few days since I've given an update. I did upload some pics over the last 3 days though so you guys won't be behind.

Went to my new oncologist yesterday who gave me a new diagnosis of Polycythemia Vera which ironically, is something that was discussed a year and a half ago with not my first oncologist but my rheumatologist. Said my CEA over 10 shows systemic disease of some kind and promised he would find it. I got approval for my CT scans with contrast and I have to call and set that up for next week. Tomorrow, more blood work...so used to it now..tonight, sleep study-at home throw away device, just have to pick it up from the hospital this morning. So healthwise, we are looking like we are headed, finally, in a direction with answers!

Moving back to the plants though, it is up-pot week! The 4 girls are moving to their 5gl forever homes on Friday, I'll be picking up another couple bags of FFOF today to make it happen. Next Friday is FLIP day!!!! Holy moly how time flies when you're growing weed!

I am raising the light nearly every two days about 2 inches at a time to compensate for Uma's (Durban Poison) growth. With that said, I've had to prop up the other girls higher and be creative with what I had to do so. Using all the wood blocks I have plus some old bonsai pots. Moving forward, after FLIP day, we will be flipping over the 3 gls pots on their heads and using the wooden blocks to even out the canopy as best as I can with the girls at such different heights.

I have neglected doing some fun shots with my plants this grow thus far but I wanted to throw some in today.

I grabbed some individuals the other day but oh how we have grown since friends.

Couple pics of the mainline of Uma just cause

Some group shots over a couple days spread

Bringing us back to this morning where all systems are ready for flower launch come next week. These girls are going to take off in their forever homes!

Miss Blue Cheese believe it or not is probably a 1/4in taller...no new sets but is taller than she was weeks ago...I don't know if I would say that's progress or what being she has a really short shelf life right now. Either way, she is outside, still. Through hot, through lack of humidity, through crazy storms and all.

Which leads me to touch on our soon to be outdoors Bubblegum Auto. Just wanted to note that I have intentions on moving her to her 3gl home come Tuesday at 14 days above ground and letting her go outside for the remainder of her time with us!

The girls are being fed all different days, as they are drinking at all different speeds. Durban was fed on Sunday, G-13 Monday, Amnesia yesterday and today I'll feed our NYC Diesel. Tomorrow it will be time for a 2:1 silica-weeks 3/4 veg mix for Uma again and so the cycle will continue.

Other than that I have no more fun info for you. Baby has been up since 330 so it was a shitty sleep day for me. He's next to me on his tablet but I've got to get going to make him some breakfast cause we have been up a while now.

I can't promise I'll be back on with enough time today to get to messages but I will try as my main attempt is to get through some more journals again before night's end as I don't want to fall too many pages behind and still have some other journals to start from square one. This catching up game has certainly been taking longer than expected but this forum is just chock full of so many grows and interesting and fun reads, it's nearly impossible not to fall behind-not to mention after catching up from 5 months of being gone.

But that's all I'll stop rambling and leave you to your grows. Have a fantastic grow day friends!

I want to walk into the South African forest and pick my own true Durban seed, I'm so impressed with this gal.

Do you think that's why? Cross breeding? I've had strains that show indica when a sativa and vice versa before but I didn't think it had anything to do with breeding. Hmmm....

Sounds absolutely stellar!

I was wondering where you got that from

Your garden looks great as usual Jersey although I think 🤔 your Durban will be wanting her own tent before it’s done. lol Fingers crossed on your health concerns my little Italian robe 👘 buddy. I’m puffing on my own supply this morning. Even though it tastes like lawn clippings and it’s rough on the throat it hits hard as hell but once it’s cured it’ll be amazing.
