Far East Buds 1st DWC Grow

Congrats FE! I have been thinking about you for most of Saturday. I do not envy you all the work you are planning on doing to the grow area today :) I am a lazy Bas*** that way :) But you at least have some nice nugs drying out. Thanks for having this journal on here and allowing us all to learn and go on this trip with you. Thanks for being you. If you start another journal please let me know cause I will def sub.

Congratulations on your harvest Far East Buds.

I tried to find the article I had read previously but apparently 80% of all plants will turn hermi at one point in their life cycle, often it's very very late where people may not notice, if I'm correct the later ones are normally bananas and the ones that develope early (males) have the balls.

Having said that unless the pods on the males had enough time to grow and then open up I think you were fine. Having a male doesn't automatically mean pollination but one would assume the longer you wait the chances are one will open and then you are stuffed.

If you had clones taken and they are already pretty well into the veg stage I would take a clipping put it in some rockwool and put it into 12/12 for 48-72 hours. By then the clipping will develop and you will know straight away what sex it is.

I hope that helps with the questions you had.

Thanks yah it helps. I didn't see any balls open on the males that I saw. I pulled them within 10 days - 2 weeks into flower.

I can find out soon enough cause within a week or so I have two of the clones ready for the flower tent. My worry though is that I would get them into flower and about 4-5 weeks after I would be adding some more strains. I would hate for the clones if they are prone to hermie to contaminate them. I gave the plant plenty of reasons to do it.. So hard to know what cause it. Ill probably run the clones through before i put others in... Possibly run all the current plant through.. well pick the best 6 and flower them...soon.. even if they are not ready... well early..

Any who off to get more stuff done...

Edit sorry not sure with all the replies...

First bud not cured of course but air dried overnight well. and it is very smooth and almost no ash. Definitely uppity buzz at first. Weird taste.. nothing like any dope i have tasted.. probably gardeny for now... i am sure it will change alot. The hanging buds are already shrinking and tightening up some.

bye again...

Puff Puff Pass it on brother! :) :passitleft:

I found on certain buds... guess what ... oh yah some seeds.

So now I will go on a tangent sorry.....

I have no idea if they are from it being a hermie... bad genetics, 3 males that i culled (it was so early in flower i would be shocked.)

Now some things on it... It seems on lower buds it had a few with some serious amounts. The big buds i will get a better idea tomorrow but they seem not be on them or have as many.

Does this help understand what happened better or did too much go amuck to know what it was??

Has to have been some 'nanners in there or you had leftover pollen hanging around from a previous male. Search carefully thru your buds as you process them further for the little yellow 'nanners.

wah wah wah

So the next question then. If i have some clones in veg and they are possibly prone to it.. then should I bother with them? Or if i do because they are close to flower time... will they pollinate other stuff ? should i solo them?

Male clones?

This changes stuff as I have my beans that just came in and I'd rather be growing those and will. But it will be awhile before any of those are near harvest. but if there is an overlap I'd hate to get them pollinated... And I will have to see how this harvest smokes the hash from cleaning was nice... Not sure best way to quick dry a bud for sampling.

Any who I am tired..
I'll get a better look tomorrow

Well son of a B@$%H Didn't even know to look for them....
Yah that would totally make sense...
First grow I am not done learning yet....

not male clones
I took clones a long time ago.... It was barely in flower but def female... Nanners would explain it or possible weak genetics so the stress hermied... but I guess i'll keep running the 2.... I know to check closer now ... (fingers crossed)

Thanks again OMU

Google, Rodelization, it will explain how to make female seeds with those bananas you find on female plants that go past their prime..
Funny part was it was only week 7 flower when I harvested. All the pistils where white and didn't even change brown until after harvest. Unknown strain...
Thanks for piping in ... I hope to not... do this again..hehe

I have found OMU's advice and experience invaluable over the last three weeks. If he was in my area I would buy him lunch for a month at this point. :) I would not know where to look for nanners or when. Could anyone explain that a bit for me? I have subbed to your perpetual already. I love it. Your setup is so clean and bonehead easy. I wish I would have gone that route. But I am now considering another change to my grow and I have to stop that and just finish what I have started already. :)

You stick your buds into an oven at 225 F? Wow, I thought you couldn't do that?

THC has a boiling point of 200°C (392°F). However before the THC boils, other parts of the oil evaporate and boil.

Here are some important temperatures:

At 21°C (70°F) the most volatile terpenoids start to evaporate, lending a pungent odor to the air.

At 31°C (87°F) the less volatile terpenoids start to evaporate, lending the air even more pungent odors.

At 39°C (102°F ) vir tually all of the terpenoids undergo evaporation fairly rapidly.

At 50°C (122°F) THC-Acid decarboxylates as the water molecule held in the carbonate form evaporates. This activates the THC.

At 66°C (150°F) Cannabidiol (CBD) melts and starts to evaporate.

At 185°C (365°F) Cannibinol (CBN) boils.

At 200°C (392°F) THC boils. Clear vapor from a vaporizer.

SweetSue I learn something new everyday here. I didn't know that was even possible but really cool method. Is this the preferred method to make oils aswell or just edibles?

Here's what I found on decarbing.

2. DECARB(oxylation) - Another very important step. Marijuana produces THCA which is not psychoactive. However during the drying and curing process of a marijuana harvest some of the THCA will decarb into THC (it removes the carboxylic group, COOH).

When you smoke marijuana you are also decarbing even more of the THCA into the active THC. This step also helps rupture the trichomes, making the potent oils more accessible.

When you making cannabutter or ghee, a process which involves heat, perhaps much of the THCA is decarbed, however for best results decarb before hand anyways. Decarboxylation is essential to making a good product when you are doing an extraction
WITHOUT heat, such as some tincture methods.

To Decarb : Set your oven to the lowest heat setting or around 150°F. Now place your marijuana on a baking sheet and into the oven it goes. This process could take anywhere from 30 minutes to five hours depending on how dry the marijuana was in the first place and the quantity you are using.

*NOTE: You will smell marijuana! IT IS OKAY, the aromatic terpenoids responsible for that skunky smell, vaporize at a much lower temperature than THC and other cannabinoids.

Check occasionally and when the bud is very dry and crumbles between your fingers it is ready. (Note: if you own a food dehydrator this will work as well, however it will likely take up more time).

Somewhere back in my first journal I came across a thread on another site about decarbing that included lab testing (results were posted) to get the decarb process refined. What they discovered was that the perfect temps and timing were 225 degrees F for 30 minutes. I've done it like that ever since to great effect. May I ask where you got your information?

I've been considering the terpenes more lately though. Because I'm beginning to suspect they have more to do with the effect we get than the THC. Lately I've found myself wondering how many terpenes I destroy with oven drying. I have no explaination for it, it defies reason, but if I decarb my buds first I get higher, faster and it kicks just as long.

If they'd legalize already we'd be doing more research.

Yah my rule 1 or maybe it was 2 ...Patience!

It's been a pleasure having you Bama! If you lived near me yes I would pass it over ;) This grow has really been fun I have enjoyed the experience. That being said I hope I take all this new found experience...and never use it or have these problems again!
J/K Now I know what to do in more cases in the future. But in this game...the learning will never end...

Look forward to seeing you in my perpetual!

That's a good thing :thumb::high-five:

Yah I pulled about 28 G of semi dry smaller nuggets and tried one it already is pretty potent but drying slow still damp. I am ok with it...good breeze in there so the hanging buds gently sway. humidity a little high low 60 but breeze seems to keep it good no ill signs on buds..Other than th F in seeds... Would have been a superb harvest... oh well I will think of this first grow every time I am cleaning the crap out.

Congrats FE! I am very happy for you. I have 8 sprouts going right now and I have learned so much from my first few weeks. So much to learn and at the end, if you complete the grow, you get a reward straight away! Best damn hobby IMO. :)

Thanks It has been a pleasure having you over my place..;)

The grassy taste will indeed fade with a proper cure. I don't find it unpleasant, but then I'm partial to fresh buds. Mmmmmm. I will admit, the buds are tastier after at least a month's cure. Somewhere in the 2nd to 3rd month the taste and smell will change appreciably, so watch for that. It's really fascinating. I like to test it again every week to track the progress.

Sweet smoking homegrown by you isn't it? You're hooked now. There's no turning back. Budget it in, to easier that way. :battingeyelashes:

Definitely been hooked for 3 months now ;)
The taste is different but not bad just unfamiliar. The bud seems potent considering the wasted energy she spent on seeds. Like I was saying to bama .. First grow... bunch o issue's to still get a good yield and harvest... can't complain... Learned a crap load! the future ones should be much better. Excited for when I can get a better product than I have been buying. Soon!

No need to budget this in... way cheaper than the dispensary. Now that I have it all set up...hopefully the trips there will be a lot less now.

Thank you for looking..

WTG Bama! start a Journal! Keep things simple! Layout is key... especially if you have limited grow space.

I hope you have learned some do's and Don't s from me ;) the 420 community will always be there in times of need!

Agreed Great hobby!

Of the many over the years this one is gonna be the keeper hobby! It rewards us for participating yes.. not many hobbies reward in the end!
