Loom, HSC Bigfoot Glue (GG#4 x Humboldt Headband), day 28

Neglected middle child gets some attention!

Topped and pruned, preserving nodes 3 and 5.

This is a modification of the training I did for Desert. After I saw how intensely the plant prioritised the upper branches, I've decided to go with a 2-node base instead of 3, to limit the resource asymmetry.

Loom won't be as beautiful as Desert was, but she will be much better optimised, structurally, for the space.

Heh, I keep getting whiffs of that antiseptic-hospital-chemical edge from Loom, whose base smell is otherwise the familiar kushy dank.

As perhaps the most notorious modern bearer of the Chem-Diesel torch, I am very interested in the GG#4 terp profile. I'm also very optimistic about this particular rendition by HSC.

:yummy: :hookah:

Wonderful thing to figure out.

It’s one of those, “oh no! But oh yay!” Moments.

Maybe they’ll cotton-on and design one just a bit bigger :D. I have also lay here reconfiguring an 8cube “Kallax” shelf unit in my mind. I was thinking i could take out a shelf on one side (would need to cut) for a small vegging space.

Yeah, swapping to the "heavy feeding" schedule probably compensated for my under-measuring. At least the disparity was consistent!

That Kallax shelf, modified, would make an incredible perpetual installation in someone's living room, lol. I would love to do that.

LOL did you not believe me the first time?

You've been working too many night shifts mate!

You're always welcome, Tra! :welcome::cool:
Omg!

I am cringing so hard right now!

My memory is so fucking bad! It didn’t come up in my watched threads and because it’s been a minute I swear to god I would have sworn I’ve never seen this thread in my life!

The fact that I posted almost the same thing both times tho.

So loll embarrassing!

EDITTTTTTTTTT

Oh hang on!

HANG ONNNNNNNNN!

I didn’t think that posted! I was trying to post that this morning when I first saw your thread and it wouldn’t load.

Oh thank you Jesus. I seriously thought my dementia was coming in hawt.

Lol honestly don't even worry about it

I'm glad you're here!
Pretty sure most of us login the next morning and are surprised by all the things we wrote the day before :lot-o-toke::ganjamon:
Sye it’s not the next morning tho, it’s the SAME DAY!

THE SAME FUCKING DAYYYYYYYYYY!

:laughtwo: :laughtwo: :laughtwo:

Grub, Pre-98 Bubba Kush, day 1 of 12-12

Last week was absolutely packed with festivities and celebrations for me, so I took a few days off the 'mag. Also the world got soo noisy with all the election stuff. I hope you all have been keeping well!

A lot has happened in that time, so this is a longer post. Feel free to skip to the photos if you're not interested in the troubleshooting!

So I finally threw Grub into 12-12, after 89 days of veg! I waited this long because there was a lot of dialling in to do with this new cardboard box, namely the following parameters:

1. Airflow and carbon filter

For a long time I thought that the blower I had wasn't strong enough to push through the filter. Holding my hand in front of the filter, I could only feel the slightest blush of air.

Well, I figured out that it was neither the blower nor the filter! Rather, my passive intake hole was the chokepoint. I realised that the airflow out the filter was fine whenever the door was open, and put 2 and 2 together. I added a second intake and airflow is great now.

(Also: the AC Infinity Airplate is NOT AT ALL the right thing for an exhaust. It can't handle any obstruction at all. @MrSauga @VetSmoke85 )

2. Light intensity and distance

TLDR; my lux meter was doing weird stuff and I couldn't leverage the lux readings from my last grow. It's working properly again and I could finally be confident about how much light the plant's getting.

3. Droopy plant in late veg

So........... I was stumped by this for a long time. Didn't happen when Grub was younger.

Whenever I watered, the plant would droop for 1-2 days before slowly perking up again. I have been giving it clear wet-dry cycles, so I know it wasn't overwatering. I also knew it was unlikely to be rootbound.

And then.... it occurred to me. My old nemesis, the F#KING WATER TABLE! I was trying to "cheat" by using a low and wide pot to fully economise the space. And I think that was my mistake. You can see the water table line (and the sad drooping) clearly in the (rushed) picture below.

That would be like... a third of the plant's root mass? No wonder it was droopy after watering.

..... yep! Imagine having the same issue twice in one grow! (First time was in the little seedling pot, some of y'all may recall.)

The pot was a 3 gallon fabric pot that had been cut down to roughly a third of its height. So to rectify the issue, I took another 3 gallon pot, cut it down to about 2/3 height, and filled the bottom with a few inches of fresh mix, before popping the plant on top.

Grub perked up within a couple of hours! I also gave it a good defol.

Finally, here you can see the results of the constant supercropping/pinching. Grub has a very solid base!

Phew!!!! We got there, fam! I'm happy with the conditions going forward.

I know it's a bit funny to up-pot just before flip, but it's definitely better than leaving it as it was.

Nice to write to you all again. More updates on the other two plants, soon!

:cheer::high-five::surf:

Congrats on the flip, and thanks for that perched water table update! Good catch. :thumb:

Highya Shed! Thankya! I'm surprised people don't encounter the water table issue more often. But then again, I guess most growers wouldn't be messing with such small containers to begin with.

Wouldn't putting a wire grate under the pot make that area dry a lot faster in a cloth pot?

Whoa! First time I've heard of this. Wicking action? Or just exposure to the air?

EDIT: Ah yes I totally get it. Great idea!! Next time. But also I don't want to encounter this issue again, lol.

Whether you grow in a tall pot or a squatpot, having airflow underneath is always recommended.

Of course! Noted. Not straightforward for me given the vertical height constraints, but I'm sure I could come up with something that lifts them by an inch or so.

Bamboo stakes are gonna save me again, I can tell...

Maybe not ideal for your grow space, but these lift grates and trays have made feeding a dream. I have a reverse pump to pull out the excess when they’re done

Thank you! I like your setup! Yeah, probably no pump for me right now, but even just those grates would be.. great. Where do you get those? :Namaste:

Hola Sy and friends! :passitleft:

To use a shallow pot, one must go coarser, and increase drainage. The height of the perched water is directly related to particle size - the finer they are, the higher it is. Check out a typical mix for bonsai - very coarse.

A fabric pot will always be more effective with a bottom air space. In bonsai, drainage mats are used in the bottom of the pot.

Hola Felipe!

Thank you for the great intel. All very good points!

Here I was thinking I was using "plenty" of perlite already! Noted for the next time. :thumb:

Also gonna check out those draining mats, and perhaps a study of bonsai techniques in general. Seems like I could learn a lot from that field!

How you doing, Felipe? What you up to now you're not running anything?
