DWC & Soil: Verb's Purple Puncher Autos, Mars Hydro TS 1000

Heya V! :high-five:

I’m sure you know this, but for the benefit of others - always add silica products first - before CalMag and Micro - and mix in very well.
Heya, wag1
Finally got my formulation done and did the res change so probs tomorrow I’ll see how she likes the mix.

And yup, I remember that you recommend to add silica product(s) first.

What I do is take a separate 1L bowl filled with HOT tap water or boiled water then mixing Silica in it - letting it to cool down and sit for 12-24h before the use (stirring it time to time)
Then I usually add the Silica water during mixing other components or to the final solution. Uh oh and one moar good stir..:headbanger:
Espicially GHE’s silica powder tends to pour to the bottom of res.

Remember I read somewhere that Silica dissolves better in hot/warm water.

Looking fantastic! :yummy:
Thanks bruv :green_heart: Can’t wait to see how the buds set! Quite different than soil cultivation.

12/20 Journal update

Heya folks!
PP#2 on dwc definitely loved the new V-blend formulation. She drinks more and more daily (about 4-5L per 24h)

2x3 tent definitely getting pretty crowded.. PP#1 stayed pretty compact so shes getting the light evenly in the corner. PP#2 on dwc tho got that big so I have to keep rotating the bucket daily, so each side gets light evenly…
I was thinking about raising the TS1000 high as possible (lamp and plant tops distance would be like 25") to the tents roof and assemble 2x 100W 4000K LED’s on both side there as well. So that would be ~350W total.
But 200W with 4000K color temp fucks up the TS 1000 spectrums. Too much white color, which was the worst Kelvin temperatute for cannabis.
TS1000 had pretty balanced blue and reds and minimal white (4000-5000K)

I would appreciate your opinions, I’m having a ”do or not dillema” again. :battingeyelashes:
And tent temp at canopy level would prob raise 1.5-2C - So the canopy temp would be something like 25-27C.

And dwc memo..

When tds and pH drops can’t we assume that the cations she absrobs are more K ions?

I’ve noticed when topping the res with Terpinator or Astro Flower to bring EC back to desired level, it usually consumes pretty close to the same amount in ~12h.
For example this morning topped with ~2L water mixed in 5ml Terp & 3ml Bloom which brought ppm back to 980 - just a moment ago did the evening routines and she had eaten 110ppm worth of something. And feels like pH gradually drops when TDS falls.

Hello 420fam!
Another update. PP#2 on dwc drinks, eats and thrives. There is a mad amount of bud sites. Can’t wait to see how she turns out in full bloom.

Topping the res usually with pH’d water + HG, and if theres more than 100ppm fall in TDS, then including Terpinator and/or Astro Flower to bring ppm back to the desired level and new fresh K2O for her to consume.

PP#1 hopefully lasts for th next ~2-3 weeks before its time to chop. I was expecting more dense buds since she stayed so small. Anyway at least two more weeks time to swell :yummy:

Been working for my own dedicated Bloom nutrient formulation. Calling it a V-Blend :D
Firstly many thanks to @FelipeBlu for sharing the huge nutrient profile calculator, which made the fine tuning and some of the calculations easier. (If you’d like to get your hands on it, I could PM you the spreadsheet. Just ask if interested)

Disclaimer to the following: I grow in a peat based soil-less mix, although I think it should also work in DWC, I have yet to try it.

I like giving your own custom blend its own name. My custom nute blend is called FN Nutes® (Farside Nutrients). I too have a calculator I've made, but mines set up for ml per gallons rather than ml per liter.

Ive been exploring and doing some research for the most common elements and their needs during the flowering.
The values may vary, and their need may vary from plant to plant. So all these values and combinations are created based on my own ”studies” and for my needs.

  • Nitrogen (N): Especially in hydro growing Ive found out that steady supply of N during the whole bloom cycle grants the best results and longest possible plants life cycle. Aiming to keep N ppm values between 100-150ppm during the whole flowering cycle. Nitrogen amongst with others will be dropped completely out week/couple days before the chop.

Since you asked a question in my thread, I'll give my opinions on each element here also. 150ppm of N is what I target from mature vegging plants through harvest. Now you're doing DWC so it's not as important, but in a soil-less medium I would try to have 10% of the Nitrogen come from Ammoniacal sources, and the remaining 90% be Nitrate, if your water is under 75ppm. For water that's 75-150ppm, I'd up the Ammoniacal percentage to 25%. The theory there is to help stabilize the pH of the media more based on the alkalinity of the water being used.

  • Phosphorus (P): a lot of conflicting information regarding P. Studies has shown that over 50ppm of P does not grant better yields, but in return for all the PK additives and formulas recommends a lot higher Phosphorus values during the peak flowering. So I’ll be using the golden mean between 50-80ppm of P.

30 is about my target now. I've gone as low as 20 with an experimental grow, seeing how little P you really need. I've been up as high as 60. I didn't really see any benefit at 60.

  • Potassium (K): Potassium availability might vary a lot depending on other nutrients. Generally any fruiting crops require from 150ppm to ~300ppm of K. I’m aiming to keep N:K ratio 1:2/1:3 and Ca:K close to ~1:2, so V-Blend Potassium ppm values going to be between 250-330ppm.

Around 200 is where I'm at now. I've been up to 280ish at one time but again saw no benefit at higher numbers. A word of caution, I have seen grows quickly burn up and die (thankfully not mine) at K numbers around 300.

  • Calcium (Ca): Any excessive Ca inhibits other nutrients uptake and the transpiration. When having VPD on point, I guess ~120ppm of Ca should be enough. Aiming to keep Calcium ppm values between 80-150ppm. And values will be increased only if a deficiency occurs.
  • Magnesium (Mg): Most effective range during the fruiting seem to be 50-70ppm - and thats what aiming for. Over 100ppm has reported to produces less dry product than values above.

My Ca target is around 80-90. I like my Mg to be 1/3 of my Ca. I'll use this quote "Both Ca and Mg ions have a +2 charge. Ions with equal charges can affect the uptake of one another. The best way to avoid disturbances is to supply the nutrients in the proportion the plant uses them. Thus when working with concentrations as opposed to ratios and amounts over time, the risk for antagonism increases." (Ericsson 2007a)

  • Sulphur (S): Haven’t really studied how much S has an overall effect on floral development. So a bit wider range here 50-200ppm

Some claim higher S levels lead to sweeter flavor. Can't say I see a difference. Tissue sample results would lead one to keep S about equal to Mg, so I'm around 30.

  • Silic (Si): Not a necessary element, but it has been proven to improve crops overall mass and strength. Resist against diseases etc. Aiming for 30-50ppm which seem to be most effective.

50 is right in my wheel house.

Edit: Until a couple months ago, I was doing much the same as you, mixing existing products to try to get to my goals. Now I've bought the raw salts and can blend things much closer to my targets. It's also way cheaper too. The types of salts and quantities used to create FN Nutes® are all posted over in my journal. The downside is that it's much harder to source some of the components outside of the United States. It may not be an option for everyone.

Hey @Verbalist ! Everything’s looking great under your care!!!

12/26 Journal update + Bucket change

HoHo! Hopefully you all had a great christmas.
So today was a reservoir change day. I did little adjustments to the V-blend formula. Felt like needed little more balance between K & Ca, to get it closer to 2:1. And had a bit high phosphorus ppm’s which may have had an impact on stem elongation.. Thus Phosphorus ppm values were reduced as well.

New patch is:
*start - tap water 115ppm (19ppm Ca)
#1. 1.6ml/l (6ml/g) GHE Micro
-> N: 100ppm, K: 21ppm, Ca: 120ppm

#2. 1.4ml/l (5.3ml/g) GHE Bloom
-> P: 33ppm, K: 53ppm, Mg: 48ppm, S: 82ppm

#3. 0.8ml/l (3ml/g) GHE Grow
-> N: 26ppm, P: 3ppm, K: 44ppm, Mg: 8ppm

#4. 0.7ml/l (2.8ml/g) Remo Astro Flower
-> N: 8ppm, P: 20ppm, K: 74ppm, S: 10ppm

#5. 2.2ml/l (8.3ml/g) Terpinator
-> K: 76ppm

  • N: 135ppm
  • P: 56ppm
  • K: 268ppm
  • Ca: 140ppm
  • Mg: 56ppm
- Ending TDS: 1030ppm / EC: 2.0-2.1
- pH: nutes buffered tap water down to 6 and lowered it down to 5.8 for start & full range sweep.
* Beneficials and B’cuzz Silic boost 0.6ml/10L for ~33ppm of Si.
These values looking heaps better already, because I’ve a feeling that 295ppm of K with 110ppm Ca was a bit too much.

Didn’t realize at all how big she was until I took her out from the tent o_O

And PP#1 Logan went for the flush today. I guess she’d be ready in ~two weeks tops.

Hey @farside05 and thanks for the reply.
As mentioned above that excessive P most likely caused some unwated stem elongation, and decided to decrease the ppm value.
My Ca target is around 80-90. I like my Mg to be 1/3 of my Ca. I'll use this quote "Both Ca and Mg ions have a +2 charge. Ions with equal charges can affect the uptake of one another.
Yesh, thats why I’m aiming close to 3:1 Ca:Mg ratio — and CBT studies shown that 50-70ppm of Mg is best range for the flowering plant. Also Calcium being little bumped up now because K:Ca ratio was little off, and by judging the stem tissue it’s lacking Ca and/or Si.

Until a couple months ago, I was doing much the same as you, mixing existing products to try to get to my goals. Now I've bought the raw salts and can blend things much closer to my targets
Oh and ye, Ive been thinking about that because my local hydrostore has available ”RAW” brands dry salts and Canna’s liquid ones.
Probs going to finish this round with my bottles and next round could mix and blend everything just as I want.

Thanks for stoppin!

Smoky holidays
