DWC Bubbler Grow Tent First Attempt

right gmt... temps are an issue but i think ill get by.. as long i dont get slime in the rez really :/

i was just thinking/looking... my plant reminds me of the same size as munki's first pics.... hmmm.......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

SUN: o yeah for sure for the carbon filter i think im DEFINATELY going to need a can fan.. but the MAIN reason i wanted to open up all these holes with duct fans is b/c of your grow and how constant fresh air has helped you man!

sun: yeah like WOF said, 6'' are only 25 bucks!... can you remind me? i know we spent like 3 pages talking about it.. but what was the solution? would it be worth me putting another 6'' inline fan on the other end of the reflector for intake to help push air through??..

I think WOF provided the best info:

odor, its a matter of both fluid dynamics and thermo dynamics. in specific, mass and energy analysis of control volumes. but in everyday terminology:

the more air you move through the hood, the more heat will be removed with it. now here is the important stuff. every bend you make in your ducting will slow down airflow, so try to keep it as straight as you can. also inline fans suck better then they blow, so it is better to put them after your light. (also it is small, but the fan motor creates heat, and its probably better to create that heat after cooling the lights as opposed to before.)

as far as inline verses a y, a y would produce significantly more flow. while it is true that a smaller intake would slow down the flow some, a dual exhaust would pull twice as hard as if they were placed inline. inline would still boost and help flow but only to overcome the drag. placed side by side, the intake airflow would be flowing faster than either of the fans at the exhaust. here is a diagram to illustrate what i mean.

<--[out]==<==[fan]=\\
..............................<====[light]====[in] <--flow
<--[out]==<==[fan]=//

so in other words, if you have a 500 cfm fan on your ducting, after drag and bends and etc, you might be getting 350 cfm. if you use two inline they would over come more of the drag and you might get 450 cfm total. but if you ran them in a y, the flow rate of the air over the light would be the two added flow rates together, so 1000 cfm, but due to the bends, friction, you might only get 700 cfm. but still much better than the 450 for inline.

now i could go into more detail about exactly how to measure how much heat you can remove, to figure out exact proper flow rate for your bulb, and control volume, and room, but you would need to know a lot of stuff to do it, and its much easier just to set it up and see what works best.

I have an 8" inline fan from home depot for 25 bucks, reduced to 6" on either side that supposedly pulls 500 cfm. it is kinda small and will lose more flow from friction than a bigger centrifugal fan, but it is more than sufficient, in part because i pull and vent to ports that go out of my space. I run 600 watts. i might make it more efficient down the line, but right now i have it pushing air over the light, lol, exactly what not to do. but ease of setup was more important to me than the little bit of lost efficiency.

hope that helps you out odor. pm me if you need more specifics.

So you would be better off running them in a Y configuration rather than inline, but you would still benefit from running them inline.

i forgot about that post ss, damn i get talkative sometimes. lol.

one more thing odor,
if you were scrubbing or cooling your air, or injecting CO2 like i do, you would want your tent sealed and you should vent both sides of your light outside the tent. that way you dont exchange the air in and out of the tent. . .

but for now you are TRYING to suck hot air out of the tent and push it out, so in this case i would suggest doing what i just did after i took the ac out, i unhooked the intake side of my light, this will passively pull air into the tent, cool the bulb and blow it out the top.

also, another benefit of a can fan is that you can use it inline with both the scrubber and the light cooling. just hook the scrubber up to the intake of the light and then the other side of the light to the fan, and the fan out of the tent. then it serves both purpose and you use less watts, and have to buy 1 less fan.

SUN: o yeah for sure for the carbon filter i think im DEFINATELY going to need a can fan.. but the MAIN reason i wanted to open up all these holes with duct fans is b/c of your grow and how constant fresh air has helped you man!

Ok, gotcha.

The booster fans would work great for flow-through ventilation.

In order to not have to move your tent away from the wall much, you might be able to install them *inside* the tent to those 4" plastic fittings, and then just move the tent away from the wall enough to provide a couple of inches of clearance for air flow.

If that's how you were already planning to do it, then nevermind ;).

Hey does anyone know why I am having such a hard time spliting an air line for 2 seperate air stones? Most of the time I can only get it to come out of one.

I ran 1 line under water from rena 100 air pump, split it there, 2 exact same 4" air stones dead level. Only one side works ever. I even have 3 air stones to juggle!!

SUN: yeah man i remember that now <drr... worst part is i cant blame it on the smoke :/ > .. yeah i think im gonna get some fans and do that... 4'' fans are even cheaper than 25 bucks so right on... if it wasnt for your grow i wouldnt even be doin this! +rep to 420mag!

WOF: yeah man i think the 2nd part of what you said, about cooling the light AND scrubbing it is what ill do when things start to get Odorous.... i never thought about that??.. and for now i think ill unhook the intake side of the air cooling of the light... i mean theres no reason not to??.. sheesh, idk where i get this stuff haha.... the only reason thatd be necessary to lock off the light cooling is if the air inside the tent is sealed and smelly which its not so Word!

meanbean: yeah man idk what to tell you there.. id take the air pump back n tell em its faulty if what youre saying is true man.. heres a thought:

is the pump a 1 outlet air pump? and youre trying to split THAT into 2?.. b/c if it is then, no offense, it could easily be your configuration thats screwin ya... Mine is a 4 outlet that im turning into a 2 outlet then run to each just so you know. good luck! and thanks for stoppin by my grow!

hm i think i know what youre lmao'ing about pat... lol..

so good news.. i undid the INTAKE for the light cooling from the tent and let it hang so it was just IN the tent suckin air from in the tent out.. next, i had to zip the tent up b/c i wasnt gonna be here when the light was off, which means that if the light went off and the tent wasnt zipped, the light from veg wouldve kept it pretty bright in there.. not good for dark period aye?

so i zipped it up, cleared my thermometer so i could see what the highest temp it reached was... and with the ducting being just inside the tent exchanging air, (i also undid one of the 6'' holes in the top, also left the 6'' hole that the light cooling ducting was in Open) kept the tent under 90 for a good 6 hours of light period! woohoo!

granted, i left the closet door open with a fan blowing into the closet, also had the a/c on so it cooled everything.. but nonetheless.. my heat worries are over for the time being!...

sad part being i havent got to see the poor thing since like 4pm today, yesterday, pending on how you look at it :p.....

sounds good odor,

small suggestion, if you close the vent on top, and open a port or two from the bottom, it would stay a bit cooler. . . because hot air rises, so the coolest air the tent can get is from the ground, and the warmest from the ceiling. . . pull the cool air from the ground into the tent, not the hot air, it works better. ;)

well wheel... i still have the ducting on the end of the light so its really sucking air from that, which is hanging low, towards the plant so if i didnt have the top open, id only be pulling air from the bottom to the bottom ya know?..

HOWEVER... that is VERY dumb to have the ducting still on that end hanging... drrr haha just open it up and then ill put the tops covers back on n see how the temps do

thanks for helping me "think outta the ... tent" man haa

day 4 flowering

ebb flow table/tub... my clones made it!!!... and NOW i see why you top these suckers lol.. ive never had the guts before..

IMG_04541.JPG

and as for this one.. it had been all crisped up completely on its top... i cut it hoping SOMETHING would grow out.. i knew the other one would turn out like that but i figured this one was just gonna be done or something..... heh
IMG_04551.JPG

and for the flowering chamber

still no signs of sex yet.. i know what more developed flowers look like for each sex easily but im not good at guessing early... from their position, id say they look female but like i said not sure.. these tiny things wouldnt be growing there if they were male right?.. theyd be growing below that little spiky things like on the side of the stem right?.. o well another week ill know for sure ;)
IMG_04594.JPG

k so i said i was gonna do a scrog.. i still havent built the screen yet :/

and i know Technically youre spose to do a lot training with the screen before you flip to 12/12, and i obviously didnt lol but like, im probably gonna do it anyway... it may not be a verbatim SCRoG, but itll at least be good training and support for colas at least...

god i hope this things female..

btw WOF... closed one of the top ones, but still havent gotten another duct fan :/

....Clones are coming along.:goodjob:

Lastly, and this is a MUST, get those power cords, bars, ballasts. whatever, etc. off the ground and tighten up the grow space, like this:
Clean Space.

Just tryin' to make sure that the good-lookin', healthy, plant you've got get going, stays that way!:smokin:

looks good. I would definetly take ANDY'S advice and get the cords and anything that electricity flows through off the floor. Other then that right on brother, your getting there.:goodjob::ganjamon:

sup guys thanks for stoppin in n stayin tuned!

botwin: perfect timing friend.. you always pop in when necessary =D

as far verbatim goes, i know what it means, i was using it loosely... more or less a pun, or a "play on words".... lol... as in its not a "word for word" ScroG.... bah anyway

ill cleean up the floor for sure, thanks for the heads up.. im still trying to figure out how to hang the ballast in here... hmm...

as far as the screen goes... idk if its gonna be worth it becuase idk how these motherf*c*ers change out their rez in buckets when they have a screen i mean damn dude... thats gotta be a pain.. and is it gonna be worth all the hassle??.. that can be answered in a pretty simple question i have for anyone out there (andy, butch, wof, sun... lol)

Will a plant grow bigger buds if it doesnt have to worry about its stems falling over?
Does it take energy to hold its branches up (maybe by spending energy/food on making the branches Thicker to hold up buds) that would possibly be taken away from bud production?

im sure you can see where im coming from with that question...

thanks for staying tuned in guys

and butcher, aye matey... ill clean up that room thanks for "seconding" my slob-li-ness haha ... see ya round.. n sorry i havent been keepin up with everyones journal ive been a lil busy, ill try n get around to everything now... ciao

Hey Odorous!

If you know what you are looking for with the pre-flowers you have pictured in the image below, you CAN determine sex. Here's your image...
IMG_04594.JPG

To me, you clearly have some pre-flowers but I can't determine from the pic which sex they are. A female pre-flower looks similar to the upper portion of a milkweed pod, at some time it will have one or two very fine hairs (like you eventually see in the buds) that you can visualize growing out of it. I have to get my reading glasses on and get out the magnifying glass and tip the plant so I get it in the right light. If you see a fine hair or two - absolute confirmation on female!!!
Here is a milkweed pod ( the UPPER portion of the pod is similar to the shape of a female pre-flower)
milkweedpod.jpg

Also look all the way up the plant and examine every node. Sometimes I don't see hairs on some, but find another that shows some.

A male pre-flower sometimes starts with a pointy leaf, so it can appear to be a pod-like shape at first, but a day or two later it grows and shows what to me looks like a small cluster of leaves. No single pointed pod any longer.

Let me know if you figure it out - you DO have pre-flowers there. I have sexed most of my plants from recognizing these, but some strains don't want to show them to me as early as others. It sure can help to NOT waste time on males to be able to identify these.

Good luck, honey!!! :cheer:
