DrZiggy's Low And Slow Drying: Maximizing Your Harvest

Nice colors keltic. :high-five: I love the way these drying techniques keep the colors vibrant.

Whassup Ziggs. Respect!:Namaste:
Thank you Sue for showing me this place.
This could be a big deal to me.
I used a dehydrator many years ago.
But nothing like this.
Let me catch up bit on this thread.:nomo:

Hi DrZiggy and SweetSue

You have another convert today. I am about half through harvesting. I spent a couple hours reading through the complete thread and by the time I was 1/4 through I had already been sold on this technique. Thank you also to the great folks here at :420:

I started with a wash of 5% H202 and laid out dry and then popped them in the refrigerator. The refrigerator is running at 47 degrees and the humidity was running at 50% before I put them in and popped up to 70% right after putting them in.

I have also been recording weights for each branch when harvested, after trim and dried ready for jars. Will be interesting to see if weight is affected by drying method.

Yikes humidity spiked after putting the buds in. Will see what happens overnight.

It's ok Troy. It'll start dropping almost immediately.

My refrigerator has settled @ about 30% RH. The tiniest buds got too dry - around 48% in the jar. I have to check the buds every day to make sure the rest aren't too dry. Is the ultra low humidity going to be a problem?

How long did it take for the RH to drop down that low? Mine is starting to drop like Sue had indicated. Maybe my buds were too wet when I put them in as I did not have a spinner.

I think it was in the 30s by the second day in the fridge. I had to put the smallest buds in a jar with a 62% Boveda pack to get the rh UP to 62!

Wow.. Is the ambient humidity in you house also low? I think my refrigerator had a Relative Humidity of about 50% before I put plans in. Ambient in my house is about 45%

I've been considering this, and I don't see this as a problem, although it'll be a challenge for you staying on top of it.

The thing is, we want the water pulled out of the buds with the least disturbance to the terpenes as possible. The cold and low humidity are what do that for us. What possible problem can there be in drying faster, under the same basic conditions, cold and low humidity? As I see it, this means you'll likely keep more terpenes intact.

This is very similar to what I'm doing with the rice. I'm making a special effort to spend the dehydration of the buds with minimal exposure to open air.

Anybody else have thoughts on this?

Cool info! I'm going to try this with at least some of next yr's harvest.

I've recently been curing my buds for a month in a mason jar with boveda and boost 62% 2 way humidity packs designed for 67 grams . Buds taste, smell and burn great that day . I recently threw some in a bag and stayed at a friend's overnight and smoked the buds in the bag the next day and they tasted, smelled and burned terrible. Like burnt rubber and chemicals . It was a day and night difference. I've been burping the jar properly , keeping them in the dark and storing the properly .
Last night I took the boveda and the boost packs out of the jars since I'm stable at 62 percent. Any ideas why and what's goin on here ?

I noticed that Troy had the stems loose on the shelf. Not sure if yours are in jars, paper bags, or loose, but jars and bags seem to keep them from drying too quickly.

I'm playing with drying them on the stem. My RH stabilized at 55% inside the refrigerator and being on the stem my thoughts are the stems will also slow the drying. If others think I'm wrong let me know. So far the are drying slowly and no sign of crispness.

I also needs a slightly faster than the 2 weeks people have reported in bags and jars. I have to have them stabilized curing in jars by Nov 23 when I go away for 6 weeks. I think I'm OK but will have to keep an eye on them.
