Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Hey @Doc Bud and all. I have a couple questions.

I had 6 clones in 1s that were super wonky, growing really slow, 1 and 3 bladed leaves and just not worth the hassle so I culled them. So I dumped all 6 into a tote and am wondering if I should throw the clones in with the soil, dust with roots and let them sit for a bit. Its 1st run. They're in there now but I didn't dust or add water.

My second question is can I use this soil right away to plant some seeds?

Thanks!

Sure. You can do that. Good job on the cull. BTW, the way to fix that is 24hours of light till the new growth is normal.

Hi Doc and other misfits.

Things are going superbly for my first kit grow (single Blue Dream). We’re at 20 days since it popped up. I’m wondering how many times it’s ok to do the 1/4 cup down the top (around the outside) routine while waiting for the first drench.

It’s fairly light - but maybe could get lighter. And the top 1 - 1.5 inches is getting dry very quickly. And it’s only barely damp below. In the last 2 weeks I’ve put a little water down twice when the top was really dry.

So the plant looks fine. Not in need of anything. Top 1-2 inches is totally dry - v slightly moist below that. What I’d like to do is pour another 1/4cup plain water down the top and try to push it another week before the first drench. Thoughts?

This is one of those grower's discretion things. If you're confidant about watering plants, then you probably already know what you'll do. :)

But I'm ruthless about watering. I absolutely detest wet soil. I don't mean well watered soil, I mean over watered soil. I detest it. You're just stuck at that point. Everything stalls, and that means it takes even longer to dry out. Meanwhile the plant is going limp and it's fading, and there's nothing you can do about it until the soil dries out. It can take days, it can take weeks. You lose time waiting and then you lose time fixing it. All because it seemed like it needed water. Uh huh.

On the other hand, if you know what I'm talking about, then sure, feel free to keep the herd in the upper layer happy.

I rarely bother with it, and mine have been coming out alright. Sometimes, if it's an especially small plant in a big pot, I'll give a little help.

Also, there are exchanges of gases going on in the soil, so the biota need breathable medium during the wet/dry cycle. Drying out isn't an entirely bad thing.

:Namaste:

Yep great, thanks Gray - its getting pretty dry down in there so I think i’m on good tracks with that. Had just noticed Doc suggest that sometimes. The fan is kinda close to it so that’s drying out the top a lot.

I’m trying to check the weight, but my strength varies a bit and makes that tricky. SO thanks for that - i’m getting meaner all the time ;)

Hey Amy... Gazoo likes to use a scale to weigh his. Just a thought, if you were looking for precise.

Ya...the scale thing is over the top...but that's just Gazoo...love ya man! Once the plant gets some size , the weighing the pot thing is really no longer the best way ,..just cuz the plant starts to get some real weight to her , so...
As Gray said Amy..i don't bother with the keeping the top layer of soil moist thing.....just let the whole pot dry out ..then soak her good...roots will build as the soil drys out. Those great roots we all see on Doc's plants are from him letting the soil dry out really good between waterings . After the plant gets a lil size and is stronger , like yours, just wait till the very bottom set of leaves starts to droop a bit...just a bit though , OK...this is the perfect time to give a good drink, ..right when those first bottom leaves start to wilt,...but just a little OK...not the whole plant...that's way too much stress...not needed .
Enjoy your day Amy....cheers.

A time will come when you will thank me for this

I’ve thought about that, but can’t be bothered! I’ll learn how to see it I’m sure.

Excellent- this shall work! Thanks D

The bottom of the pot is super dry too - when I check the drainage holes. I’ll watch for those leaves showing me a sign :thumb:

:thanks: all

You don't need to learn to see, you can learn to feel. ;)

Just lift a dry pot and you'll see how light it is. When you lift the wet pot, it will be significantly heavier. Let thy arms be thy scale!

Thanks Krip - I know that’s the best way. I just don’t have reliable arms! My strength waivers, a lot, so a completely dry pot could weigh a ton to me, depending on what I’ve done the days before. On strong days, like air. It’s not reliable ;)

I’m actually very certain it is almost completely dry, so now I will wait...

Hey everyone,

Need some help IDing a couple of bugs. Backstory: planted some seeds last Sunday. Only two out of 13 came up. Hmmm... Decided to dig a seed up today to see what might be going on. I'm carefully picking the dirt away from around the seed using a toothpick, uncovering the seed a little by little and can see that its opened along the crack a bit. No tap root. To my surprise, I see something wiggling in the crack. Looked under a magnifying glass and I see part of a white worm moving in and out of the seed! Looking closer, I see a half dozen white (translucent) pear shaped bugs crawling around! At first glance I thought they might be aphids. Research says they may be hypoaspis mites which are a beneficial predatory mite. (They're too small for a pic . . .)

So, any ideas on what the worm might be? I purchased these seeds last summer so its hard to imagine a worm has been inside one all this time.

What about the white bugs? Good mites? I know a pic would help, but....can barely see them let a lone take a pic.

Yes,...right now those roots are searching , and searching...you will soon see those bottom leaves not perk up...like the others...they will seem lazy, ..perfect time to water, perfect. Water like this in 'veg' only , ok Amy...during the bloom phase, try and water with less amounts , but more frequently, keeping the soil slightly moist at all times. , if ya know what i mean. Not bone dry , like in veg. Cheers.
