Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

The foam panel construction would be a fraction of the cost of a tent. Could probably do it for under 100 bucks.

If you already have a tent building it around the outside seems like a
simple solution, simplicity and ease of use is high on my projects :)

I do like the idea, will look into it for the next grow, Always move forward,
Always improve

Any recommendations on Par meters? Was thinking of getting one... have an app in my phone but have no idea if it's even accurate. What do you guys use? Anyone use a phone app that's accurate at all? I would think phones wouldn't be good at this...

There's only 2 good meters out that work well with leds. Apogee and liqor, I have mq500 from apogee, runs around $500, the liqor is close to $2000. The problem with cheaper ones, just not accurate, they gave a narrow window in the par range. The mq500 is the newer model. Goes up to 700nm, most of the cheap ones max at 600nm, the accuracy is off around 40%.

I'm constantly using mine, it's very handy tool for growing. Most of these lighting companies just plain out lie about their numbers.

Awesome, thanks for that Buck. Guess I'll be skipping that tool for a while. Would be nice to have, and I'm a very curious person, but it can wait if it's that much. Off by 40%... not even worth buying.

I use the cheapo Hydra farm Meter (approx 25.00)

Record readings (18" to canopy) when I put in a new bulb so, this way I can monitor
how fast its losing its power.

I also use it to find the hot and cold spots as for High and low LUX readings and
can adjust my side lighting to compensate for the low spots.

Not sure how accurate it is but it helps for my base-line and finding the drop off
point for coverage.

Wow... huge differences in price depending on site. Found it on one for 32 and most others that one is 135... crazy.

Not sure were you are located but recently checked CL and noticed
an even better one for 30, Need to read the "GROW Equipment for Sale"
and look over the list, I find a lot of cheap Cool Stuff that way

If your wanting to test hps or mh lights, there are some good meters much cheaper, can get a good one for around $200+-. For some reason there is a huge range for error with leds, not picking up the upper range in red spectrum (600-700 nm)

Even if a meter isn't as accurate, still would be great for reference. Like Gazoo mentioned with the hps bulbs. Or put electronic display power meters on your lights. Then you can adjust by power draw. Another easy way to find your sweet spot

Cover crops....a great idea during the off season, as long as the crop is called for by a soil test. Companion planting is better suited for raised beds, IMO. But overall, I stay away from companion planting because we want the soil to be "nimble" so to speak and easy to change from anionic to cationic, etc.

However, in a raised bed I can see it being a really great thing if done correctly. I'm also fascinated by no-till.....having a huge raised bed that you just plug plants into. Those are all things I hope to see people doing in High Brix soil.

I haven't been able to check in here for ages, and when I did I was stoked to land on this! What you describe is becoming something of a long term goal for me in the raised beds I I'm just doing my first grow in. Planning to cover crop and soil test between seasons. I'll send you a PM about this in the next few days if that's ok...

:scratchinghead:Doc what do you recommend for eliminating fungus gnats.:thanks::Namaste:
Hey dynamo!

I used h202. In a ratio of 1 part h202 and 4 parts water.

But I know this will kill all bennies in your soil. So buyer beware! Doc may have a more natural remedy.

Vasaline on your stalks below the 1st node to catch the flies. A 2 or 3 inch lawyer of perlite on top of your soil is a great preventative measure also. I like DE because it can be sprinkled all over and watered into the roots to kill off any hiding munchers.

Again these are my personal means of fighting FG.

I know many soil growers (don't think they hi brix) that bottom feed and only water into their runoff trays, and let the soil soak up what it needs for the plant. This keeps the top 2 or 3 inches of the soil dry and water is what the thrive on (in combo with EWC and organic materials). So the bottom feeding is doing almost what the perlite "top soil" does by providing a dry environment in which the gnats struggle to survive and larvae dies when dry

:thumb:Thanks Dab, I have some neem seed meal but I wanted to be sure I don't want to screw with Docs soil chemistry, my plants are doing stellar that's why I'm asking Doc. Here's a pic of some more of "my place"

High Amy! Good to see you in these parts! :high-five:

Pure organic Yucca will work too. Usually a couple of watering's will take care of them. I sometimes get them from the promix on 1st run soil. I do the yucca treatment and they always disappear.
How much do you use? Never heard of this and I like it way better than chemicals. My liquid karma has yucca extract for microbe food, but I doubt it's concentrated enough to ward off pests
