Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Lights....fun stuff. I don't know much about them, other than to use way more than what they recommend and spend time/money on the environment before lights.

Hey there Doc! Yea, normally I would agree about the environment. But when your environment is good, maybe not perfect, but good like mine. And you have total shit light... I'd go for better lights every time. Duggan made me realize I shouldn't worry so much as long as I'm within range. So I'm pretty good at 76-78 and 40-45 humidity.
I know it could be better, but this time of year... it's just to much to try and fix completely.

Hey Daj! I may be misreading what you are saying but think doc is gonna protest to your statement. You could have a 1 billion dollar light and if your environment is not good then your plants will not do well. I think I've shown that to a degree with my $1000 Goliath led and temps getting down to low 60's. Rescue drench galore! Your rh is acceptable for sure and now they've got some great lighting!

I have nothing close to what doc has for picture perfect plants but did figure out how to take pics and get that dark background, finally!

Oh and for anyone looking at these pics wondering what's going on, they're Money Makers that do not sprout pistils! Kept em going for 3 rounds and this is the last.

Nice pics Ween! Much better!
I know Doc won't agree, and as I said I would normally agree with his line of thinking. But I seriously only paid $150 for both of the lights I was using in that tent. Now had I had better lights to start... I would have spent that money on my environment... but those lights are terrible, needed to be replaced.

I honestly can't get my environment much better without a dedicated room... or sealed building like doc has. My rental house is way to drafty... I would either need build an insulated room inside a room in this house... or build an outbuilding just for growing. But none of those options are really feasible for me.
It's a rental...
That's a lot of money...
Way more than I spent on DIY lights for sure.

We all do the best we can.....if I were on a tight budget, I'd get a used 600 watt HPS from Craig's list or something for lighting....and do whatever it took to get temps and rH right.

But, we all do the best we can. Because I want folks to succeed----especially if using my gear----I want the message to get out:

The Environment is the most important component of success.

Understood Daj! I know what you mean. I actually started with hid lighting, 600w dimable, came with MH and HPS bulbs, plus timer and ratchet hangers for like $120 new on the zon. I actually got a 2nd one before I moved to led. I considered building a grow shed but even though I am not hurting for money, I could not justify the cost. I was growing in my garage but damn it was hard to control the environment in there so moved the set up inside and think I've got it dialed in pretty good finally. Hoping my next round will be my best ever as it has been with each grow.

Rock on!

I hear ya Doc, and totally agree. But I have 2 250 watt hps.. and even just one of those makes to much heat in my small area. That's the whole reason I went with LED was to reduce the heat. So LEDs, believe it or not, are actually part of me getting my environment right. If I had a much larger area then yes, I would have saved a lot of money.
Oh and One of the HPS is the tube type that lets you exhaust the heat away... even with that.. it got to hot in my tent.

But yes, The environment is the most important component for success no doubt!

Yep! Choice of lighting=choice of heating. Like internal combustion engines....which are much more efficient at heating than at producing torque and horsepower....lights are better heaters than they are lumen-producers. So, we make our choices based on our circumstances.

As long as folks realize that the primary goal of a growroom or greenhouse should be the environment and that total mastery of the environment is required for optimal results and we move that way to the best of our abilities things will be good.

Starting with a total badass light and skimping on everything else turns a growroom into an Easy-bake Oven. (if you're not old enough to remember these things....kids could bake brownies using a light bulb as the heat source.)

I don't think I have run any of my grows the same as the last,
something always gets improved or updated its always moving forward :)
and getting better, Kinda another reason its very hard to judge how a
certain strain will do ? its always better than the last :)

Running a 2 x 4 x 7 and a 600w HID I have found with an inline fan pushing and an exhaust fan pulling
through the closed Hood I can place the back of my hand on the glass with only a little heat
combined that with my cool mist humidifiers TEMPS are easily controlled. I have however
moved to a 400w HID and 216 watts of T5's for more control of side lighting
thats 8 sq feet or 77 watts per sq foot and 26,000 LUX at 18"

"Easy bake oven" Remember the "creepy crawlers" nearly set the house on fire with one of those

They call my house the EZ Bake Oven, you never leave not being high ;)

It's always hard to keep a good grow environment in a garage, attic, shed etc. when you live somewhere where the seasons change drastically, however I know of a few people here who run autos in uninsulated sheds during winter under 24/0 HID light with good results.

@Doc Bud: What's your take on using cover crop and/or companion plants with the kit?

Cover crops....a great idea during the off season, as long as the crop is called for by a soil test. Companion planting is better suited for raised beds, IMO. But overall, I stay away from companion planting because we want the soil to be "nimble" so to speak and easy to change from anionic to cationic, etc.

However, in a raised bed I can see it being a really great thing if done correctly. I'm also fascinated by no-till.....having a huge raised bed that you just plug plants into. Those are all things I hope to see people doing in High Brix soil.

Thanks for a good explanation :passitleft:

I've been looking a lot on no-till lately, I was inspired by a guy on a local forum who actually made a raised bed in an indoor grow room.

In about a grow's time I'll be able dedicate a 7-10 gallon pot worth of space to a no-till project where I intend to only water with plain RO water from seed to harvest, so if you have any good ideas and pointers it would be most welcome ;)

My $.02: Try doing this in 2nd or third-run (amended) Kit soil--I've done it with landrace strains and had great results! The 10 gal will treat you better.

Cheers :high-five:

Good Morning Doc,

I have a question about the kit if you don't mind.

I have some OG, Chem or combination of the two strains I would like to run.

They would go into 2nd run soil, and with the reformulated GE & Trans products.

I am wondering if the plants would grow as they should and still be able use the soil for a 3rd run?

Or would I maybe need to use Epsom salts and then throw out the soil when done?

Thanks
