Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Is there a "best" time to foliar spray? (day before a drench, day after a drench etc.)
I'm always in there at the crack of dawn when the birds are chirping the loudest but wondered if wet/dry soil mattered.

A best time? Maybe!!! I do think the timing of the sprays is something that needs to be examined and studied. I don't have any hard conclusions yet...but it seems to me that spraying about 2 days before a watering is a good practice.

You want the nutrition from the spray to find its way down to the roots....and if the container is wet the osmotic pressure isn't working in favor of this...although the plant manages just fine spraying the same days you water.

Try it out, pay attention, and see what you think.

The difference between good and great is usually nothing more than a bit of extra effort and attention.

My understanding is that the best time of the DAY to foliar feed is first thing in the morning (or, when lights first come on, for us indoor growers!) or late evening. The reason being that the stomata are open when the light is shining, but close when temps go over 80*F. As long as temps are below 80*F and lights are on, you should be good to foliar.

Yep. Right when they come on is perfect. Also, if the environment is correct, the stomata will mostly be open. That's where that high brix posture and shine come in.

Right? Getting my gear is like geocaching. You gotta want it and you gotta search. Pretty funny, at least to me.

That's a really good idea, however. New instructions are in the works too.

Yep, I had all my subscriptions wiped out somehow. Had to search this and others out to re subscribe.

I like new instructions. Have a ballpark idea on how long?

No. Soon though. It's been a fairly crazy couple of months not to mention some abrupt changes of season, constellations, photoperiod, etc. I got most of my invoices out today. I've got some insurance claims to make, and then I'll be packing and shipping, while harvesting Grape Ape and Paki....all the while working full time in an entirely different field. WTF?

Pretty soon is the best I can say. They won't be radically different, but I'll include some new practices and hopefully make them easier to follow.

Here's a tip:

Fill up a 5 gallon bucket with water.
Fill a 1oz/30ml shot glass with water and "plop" that water into the bucket.
Do it over and over until you no longer have to measure an oz. It makes mixing drenches as easy as a plop and a stir. I need simple and uncomplicated when it doesn't cost me anything.

Got a question...

My computer has been down, so I haven't been doing any updates to my journal.

I flipped to flower on a growth energy feeding. A couple days ago I game her transwater. I have one more feeding/water before cat drench.

Any suggestions on what I should give her? I don't want the soil to go flat like it did last grow.

Thank you...

I cant wait for these new instructions! I'm still going by the originals...And they still work like a charm :)

I do cat drenches at 3 weeks past flip no matter what now. Been doing that for quite a while and come out with superweed all the time lol :)

Top dress epsoms and give a HEAVY Transplant drench IE Super Drench and that soil energy won't go flat this time. If you've got a hog---another way of saying a very inefficient root system---these heavy drenches help alot.

I'll sit tight, as I've got a couple months worth of nutes to run on this soil. I'll look forward to the new instructions, and will order soon. Thanks for the reply.

I have two different strains of tomato growing in HB soil. The one on the left is a sunsweet cherry which I'm pretty certain is a hybrid. The one on the right is a brandywine which is an heirloom. I just got 6 huge tomatoes off the brandywine which I think sapped a bunch of energy from the plant.

Is this mid bloom stall where it needs more nitrogen, say from blood meal or is there something else that might be causing the leaf discoloration?

You running my gear?

Tomatos LOVE Growth Energy.

Yes, in your kit and they've both been getting the same feedings. I gave the one on the right an extra growth energy when the leaves started fading last week. Looking at it closely today I realized it's just the stems that already had tomatoes. The ones that haven't fruited yet are nice and green.

I'm running the same strains in the ground there as well for comparison. The non high brix aren't quit ripe yet but the size difference is fairly big.

Ive grown several different types of tomatoes in kit soil and not. The ones in kit soil were waaayyy sweeter then the others. I've even gone so far as to start in regular soil then top off with kit soil which made a remarkable difference in the end product. They do love energy, that im sure of, especially in the latter stages :)

Ideally, you start with GE....hit with Cat Drench AND Bloomit all at once....then go right back to GE for the duration. Top dress with EWC as needed.
