Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Hey HB gang, today is day 18 of 12/12. Doing a final pruning when I discovered this (see attached pic). Looks like both my Green Crack ladies are trying to do double duty!

There are "balls" up and down all of the colas so unless someone convinces me otherwise, they've got to go. Bummer....

Any value in using these plants along with the other trimmings for extracts?

It's a cull! You sure don't want to breed with those.

:yikes:

:rip:

:sorry:

Doc, I have a quick question about when to harvest. I believe I remember a conversation between you and ShiggityFlip where you said that he may never see any amber trichomes when using the kit. I have a Budzilla plant that I believe is done, upper fans are turning yellow and brown, but there are still a good amount of clear trichomes. What indicators would you suggest a new grower look for on when to harvest?

When new pistils aren't forming, calyx's are swelling and new leaves are not pushing out of the flowers, you're in the harvest window.

I don't bother looking at clear trichomes....that's all I get mostly, except for a few cloudy ones. I suggest going through a couple harvests and letting the plants go a few weeks past due date in order to carefully observe changes. It's a matter of personal preference on when to harvest, but from my experience most people harvest way too early, especially when they're not accustomed to High Brix.

Post a pic and I'll give you my best opinion.

I believe I have been in the harvest window for at least a week now. Based on my harvests I believe that I have been patient and harvested at the right time, but I am all ears as I may be mistaken. These pictures are from about 2 days ago.

brixnewb, you can take a bud or 2 off every couple of days...sample them and see what you think..
with HB you can go longer than you would think you can...turns out great!!!

I have actually had a plant go until water uptake pretty much ceased. No ill effects were noticed. I just wonder if my instincts are right, I hate to jump the gun and harvest early.

I'd take that thing now. I'm not sure what happened to the leaves, but the buds look fab. It should be excellent!

I do not know what happened to the leaves either. 2 weeks ago lower fans were yellowing, but upper leaves looked great. About a week ago it started gobbling up the upper fans. I believe it was done once it started doing that. I appreciate you having a look, I believe my instincts on when to harvest are good to go.

Sampling is the best method for first time strains. However when you see pistils dying on the top of the bud it's usually start of a harvest window.

Heya, Doc! It's been a while and I see you keep upping the bar for the rest of us! :adore:

I was just reading about this and I thought no one better to test it than YOU! :cheesygrinsmiley:

If you REALLY want to know what your plants are saying, try this:

Wonder what your plants are ‘saying’? Device lets you listen in | New Scientist

I have a hunch that, if I tested and tried to post what my plants were saying, with the swear words deleted by the mod's, there wouldn't be much left!

(BTW...I'm NOT actually recommending this! :cheesygrinsmiley: )

A familiar face! Great to see you Sr. Krip!

I saw the same article yesterday. Very interesting.

Doc,
I had a similar result to BrixNewB.
Good looking buds, but nasty dried up yellow fan leaves.
(Skunk#1 in SCROG.)

The lower fan leaves dont have the same problem.

I was hoping to avoid this with the next harvest (I have a perpetual grow, so the next is in week 7).
So I tried a Super Drench in week 6, and I am now getting tacos.
(Void by TGA seeds)

Should I have sprayed BRIX immediately after the Super Drench? I did.

Here is my feeding schedule. (ps, the last two sundays should have GE/SS listed)

I have no experience with TMV (Tobacco Mosaic Virus).
I got some ICE seeds from MaryJanes and they seem to have a coloration and distortion that is similar to TMV.
Any opinions by those with experience?

Lower fans look great. Uppers are crispy? Weird for sure. I don't totally get your feeding schedule, but lack of feeding would hurt lower fans first.

How's the environment?

Environment.
I've been turning down the 1K HID's to 600w to keep the temps below 80. But my thermometer says I still get some short jumps to 84, probably when the dehu runs long. (thats under the lights, the room never gets above 80)
My lights are 28 inches above screen.
Humidity between 45 and 55.
Pots off the cement with foam between.

Tell me more about my schedule and why it confuses you.
