Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

It looks like a few things.

Are you in High Brix? Any light leaks? Temps and rH?

Hey Doc Bud thanks for the reply. I'm not high brix yet still using up some subcool super soil I have. I'm in a 10 gal black pot temp is around 85-86 I know that's high still trying to get that under control. I even put in a cool tube bit of only dropped my temps by 1-2 degrees. I really thought it would help way more that that. Anyway humidity is around 40-45% no light leaks that I can find. I even put my phone in the room recording video and closed it up for a couple minutes to check and it was black as could be. I did this the day before I put this Wonder Woman in there. I did top dress with 1/2 cup Epsom three weeks ago or so. Figired that was a proper amount for such a large pot. Thank you for your time!

Several things:

1/2 cup is WAY too much epsoms
Temps are high enough to heat the soil too much
rH is low enough to stress the plant, especially with the heat.

It's gonna have a hard time, no matter what. If you can't get your temps down, try to get the rH up to about 60-65% when lights are on.

Ok well it wasn't an actual 1/2 cup. Probaly closer to a 1/4 cup or maybe 1/3 cup. I used a small lid from a spraypaint can to scoop it out of the bag and sprinkled it on top. It was about half of a spraypaint lid for whatever that's worth. I'll stop being a dope and use actual measuring devices from now on. I'm having a hard time keeping the humidity up since I have to have my fan pulling so hard to try and keep the room cool. I think it just sucks it all right out. Thanks again Doc, I think I'm just going to have to move everything to my basement. But in the summer it gets so damn hot down there I'm not sure I'd be able to cool it properly either. The top of the cellar is above ground out back so the evening sun really beats down on it. Thank you for the advice, it seems ever time I have a problem it is directly related to the heat and humidity. I'll work on that!

The more I do this, and the more gardens I visit, two things stand out:

1. nothing is more important than the environment. Get that right and you can produce high quality produce with ANY system/method.
2. Nothing is more important than the environment. Get that right and you can produce high quality produce with ANY system/method.

Get your environment dialed in! Everyone will be so much happier. Go high brix with a good environment and you'll be even happier.

Yes sir, I'll work on that.. Before I even put another lady in there. I have asked you questions several times and the answer is alway the same. My environment sucks and I need to fix it. I'm sorry for making you repeat yourself. Although the problems look differnt strain to strain the problem remains the same... Fix my environment so I may enjoy growing instead of stressing about it. Thank you again! I always appreciate your kind wise words Doc Bud.

3. When in doubt, refer to rules 1) and 2).

:cheesygrinsmiley:

Lighting is a lot of fun to shop for. Humidity and atmosphere control isn't as entertaining, it's not a simple unwrap-and-hang thing, and small grow spaces and tents don't have much room for environmental gear. So we let that slide.

Next on my list of improvements is a well-sealed space with good humidity control, preferably automated. A good environment won't necessarily get you better produce, but it'll help keep your whole grow world from falling apart. Nice pretty plants get fugly pretty fast in an environment that goes south. It's a risk reduction step. :cheesygrinsmiley: And to cite the Doc o' Bud - that's one of the few advantages of indoor vs outdoor growing - we can control the environment.

Ha! Nice. Yea, my ladies always start out so beautiful and go down hill after a few weeks due to poor environmental control. I grow in a small cabinet like 18"x18"x65". So it's a very tight fit for my equipment plus one plant. Your on the right track with the automated room, that would be awesome to have.

dajerm, if I may suggest something, :)

A SWICK , with a small enough tray but mostly fills the 18" x 18" space with 4 x 4 x 4" square nursery pots. I grew a slightly larger SWICK on the inside of a top of a tote cover. Measurement inside rim was 16" x 26"= this is about 35% more than 18" x 18".

if me? I would line my 18" x 18" with mirrors & try and either prove or disprove "using mirrors is bad" and grow some amazing HB herb! :)

Hold on, your blowing my mind... Mirrors? That actually sounds very interesting. I will research this a bit and see what I can find on it first though. I know I could get those mirror tiles that stick on easily, could be a fun experiment. I do have mylar up on the floor (although not much light reaches the floor) and ceiling as well as the walls of course.

I already have an 18"x1 1/2" tray under it and water only a little from the top to help leech in any topdressings I may have, then I pour the rest into the tray. I come back about 15 min later and check the tray, if empty i giver some more. But I don't have a SWICK i'll check that out as well. Thank you so much for the ideas, not sure if mirrors will help with the heat/RH issue but I like experimenting so its worth looking into at the least. Thanks again!

Ok, SWICK seems pretty cool and I already have a fabric pot I haven't used cause once I had it in hand I said Shit what the hell am I gonna catch any run off in. This things will take up wall to wall it was larger than advertised. Anyway thats why I like that idea.

The mirror thing has me intrigued, I found a study by MIT that I am reading and it sounds promising. Thank you!

Ziggs....now hold on brotha...mirrors...tried it...long time ago...wanna know what happens? depending on where they are...the mirror surface acts like a magnifying glass and very hot spots happen, be careful with them. We are pumping a lot of light (heat) out , that if concentrated by using mirrors bad things start to happen. Areas of plants that die off, burnt , i guess, dunno, not good!
Anyhow , just flipped the KK, used to be called "Jews Gold" now it's Kosher Kush. Have an awesome night everyone.:passitleft:

you make a SWICK by burying your pot bottoms (those with drainage holes, or fabric pots,) in Perlite on a tray. They absorb moisture from the water in the perlite. It allows the pots to be watered regularly especially when using a small pots.
My 1st journal had the SWICK grows around 14 months ago. I had great yields, varieties and fantastic HB herb. :)
a great way to grow varieties in small spaces, i found :thumb:

So I guess having the water in a container below the pot would help increase the RH a bit huh? But heat is still an issue with mirrors, although, as you know Dr. Ziggy because I'm pretty sure you were in that thread, they use them at the Moody Gardens in Galveston Texas. I am pretty sure that if they created too bad of hot spots... it'd be way worse with the sun than with an hps. I may give that a try just to see what happens. The wonder Woman looks like shit and keeps getting worse. I left my cabinet door open today to hopefully help with heat. Honestly I feel like I'm just putting bandaids on this situation. I need to buy a tent and an mobile a/c unit and move to the basement. Just need more space...

I can vouch for the basement dajerm. Right now I have 2 600w hps and four 265 watt Realdraw LEDs and I am hovering between 82 and 84 without any AC. Just vented hoods. This is with 85 degree days outside and 65 degree night temps outside. So I will get an AC for summer time but if your lights are less wattage you may not even need the AC in the basement. Heck with my new LED coming to replace the two HPS lights I may not need to buy an AC!

Doc,

please excuse the bad color of the LED's but do you have any idea why a lot of my fan stems are splitting like this one?
