Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Ya MMM, what Ziggs said brotha. Pays to just get the bigger containers of all the liquid stuff and a few kits worth of the rock stuff. that way your not always thinking of ordering more all the time. Cheers MMM.

Well, last week I put in an order which super sized some GE and Trans,,, but yeah. Bulk from now in.

Since I'm here got a question for you all... What is the process after you harvest to get the soil ready for a second run. And again, after a second run, what are you doing to get it ready for a third run??

Adding anything? Letting it sit a month?

Thanks folks!!

I have 3 25 gallon totes that hold a kits worth of soil. Each tote when they are full of used 1st run soil gets about 10lbs of EWC, leaves from the harvest as well as the rootballs and about 6oz's of amendment (1st run amendment). I throw a handful of "roots" over the leaves and water with about a gallon of water and let it cook another month. So far it is working like a charm.

3rd run repeat but add the 3rd round amendment, you need to order that it isn't part of the kit.

I have 2 totes holding a full kit between them. I usually run 4 plants and use one bin per run. As I harvest, I dump the root balls right into their respective bin, usually a sprinkle of roots powder and some water. Fold it in and let it sit until next round. Ive done 4 runs, but only used each bin twice, so starting second-run soil rounds now.

I also usually cut the root balls into more manageable chunks in the bins, but I don't worry too much about cutting them all the way down. I also "tune" my soil with trimmings throughout the grow so they stay active for the most part. I'll also make sure to toss a few leaves into the bin not being used at the time too.

I just did the second run thingie.
I added some of the rootball from the first grow, amended just like the first time except with a little less EWC, added some water, and let it cook for a month+.
For third run, it is a different amendment. I'm not there...yet.

Yeah, I didn't use any EWC on my second run, heck, I no tilled two and didn't add anything. :oops:Think it's showing,, going to pick up some ewc today and top dress a bit.... Ooops.

Thank you all!!

On a cautionary note, a year or so ago Doc said that we don't add any amendment on the second cook. I had been amending each time, too. We recharge during bloom, but no amendment for the first recook.

We'll have to wait for him to clarify, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't need more amendment until the 3rd round. Also, I recycle the entire plant except for stems, so I wonder how much more humus we really need. Over time, we may not need or want as much EWC in the mix.

In my experience, a recook isn't really necessary. I've often dumped an old rootball into a partially filled bin, mixed it up well, and immediately used the soil for a new pot - lots of lively biota in that old soil. :cheesygrinsmiley:

Interesting, Gray.
My unamended "round two" soil just about killed my current crop. All plants were stunted, dry and twisted. After the soil was amended and cooked, they took off just like you'd expect.
My understanding is, after your first grow with kit soil you amend exactly the same way as the first run, but with the added root ball and using less EWC. On the third run, it is different amendment, but the kit soil does get amended each time for the first three grows.

Yep, that seemed intuitive to me, too - the plants use up the amendment so you add more. But I learned that Doc and the others didn't. We've added recharge during bloom, so they just add some Roots and let it sit for awhile and digest everything. Third round gets re-amended.

The Doctor of Bud will clarify. :cheesygrinsmiley:

Page "666"! Oh oh... :cheesygrinsmiley:

Now you've gone and done it, Dr. Ziggy.

This is a quote from Doc's latest instructions:

Updated Instructions: August 24th, 2015
Recycling Soil

After the first crop is harvested, put the soil, including the roots, mixed with fresh EWC, perhaps 20 lbs worth along with another bag of amendment back into the barrel and cook it for another month, then use as always.

After the second crop is harvested, take that soil, and add the 3rd Run Amendment to this soil, along with some leaf scraps from recently harvested healthy plants and a light sprinkling of Roots! on the leaves. Let this cook for a month and then use as always.

After the 3rd crop has been harvested from the soil, add fresh, unused Promix along with leaves and a light dusting of roots and re-cook.

I personally do not use soil after the 4th run. Others do so with good success and I suggest seeking them out and seeing if their methods work in your garden. I get my best results with the 3rd run of soil.

I've grown upcanned seedlings directly on 3 week old root balls continuing the grow with an upcan like it was in there from the start. Top dressed with some EWC, Roots!, Amendment, just topped with binned soil :)
works great..

Yes, thanks for the quote Major. This is exactly what i do as well.Re-amend first run, let cook. As far as the old leaves, root balls and plant matter, you have to be the judge and know how much humus your going to create by adding alot. Try and balance out between the scraps and EWC. Lottsa scraps....then not so much EWC. Doc has already said the third run amendment is a little different than the first, and there is no "second", first two runs with the kit get the same bag of amendments. Sometimes it helps to kind of step back and just have a closer look at how much "stuff" your adding, between all the liquid things and rocks , the soil can get too rich. Anyhow , Happy New Year to all my brothas....enjoy these times , cheers to ya's.:circle-of-love:
