Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

The problem with borrowed genetics...

I will be keeping watch. Just checked and saw nothing.

Good deal. If you had to use a 60x magnifier to see the little fellas then you're probably fine.

The photo below is of a dank cut of Durban Poison that hasn't been performing lately in hydro, so a friend gave one to me in a 4-in rockwool cube. As a precaution, I sprayed it down with SNS 217 mite spray. A few minutes later these little fellas started popping out. Gross, right?

So, I took the blocks, dunked them in a solution of SNS 209 for a few minutes (both SNS 217 and 209 are Rosemary oil based), scraped off all the larvae that crawled to the surface, made a 1:5 hydrogen peroxide and water solution and dunked the blocks in that for a few minutes. After I saw the life leave all the little worms that floated up in the solution, I cut a half inch off each side of the block including the top, transplanted it into soil, and gave another dosing of SNS 209. It has been under CFLs at 18:6 for the last few days in isolation, and is doing well for the stress I put her under.

If anybody has any follow up tips, I'd much appreciate it. Otherwise, I plan to drench the top with SNS 209 for a few more waterings and watch for signs.

The Happy Frog ain't so Happy...

Doc,
Did you ever get Happy Frog soil tested? If so, how does it compare?

I ask because I didn't get a batch of DBHBB soil cooking soon enough, so I used some Happy Frog I had laying around to transplant some rooted clones into and they did fine for the first few weeks. The last few days, however, the older leaves have started to dry up and die from the edges in, while new leaves are much lighter that before. I suspect an unbalanced pH since the Happy Frog isn't as mineralized as DBHBB, and I haven't been pH'ing because I'm still using DB drenches and foliar sprays... and I'm lazy.

Anyway, I plan to transplant the ladies from small pots to gallon pots of cooked DBHBB and i hope that will remedy the issue. Do you have any other suggestions?

The photo below was taken about a week ago for size reference.

This Flo is showing early signs of the problem. Also from about a week ago.

Hey docbud.
Good to see your still growing strong and providing the wealth of information to all these growers.

I Would love to chat with you sometime. Would like to get a kit too, what's the process now. It's been too damn long.

Happy Frog is low brix soil. It simply will not work for our purposes. I'd cease the foliar sprays right away, as salts are already sky high in the soil.

Thanks for clearing that up, Doc.

hey doc, I've got some heavy indicas going this round that I think were probably raised on hydro. I'm not having any problems yet, plants look great. They've got their first feeding last week. Last round, I accidentally only gave one plant like 10ml transplant and some tea one watering and it seemed to LOVE it. Thinking I might try that with all the plants this time around, what do you think? they are still in one gals, btw and so was the one I gave the 10ml transplant to at the time.

and do you think I should super drench before I switch them to 11/13?

couple things:

1. Why not follow directions until you learn how everything works? That's what I did. That's what the people who are KILLING IT did. You could do it too!

2. Also, if you have a heavy indica, it might do better on 12/12 than on 11/3, unless you're trying to get the recessive sativa traits to express.

Doc, as you said "Also, if you have a heavy indica, it might do better on 12/12 than on 11/3, unless you're trying to get the recessive sativa traits to express." This is true too. My Indicas(most were Unknowns) and the hybrids that are 50% or more grew short and stocky under 11/13 and slightly more so with 10/14. This is great stuff! :)
