Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

I had to add extra water to my mix to get it to cook. If you grab a handful of soil and squeeze it, does is hold together? It sounds like you are on the dry side.

This is about where I am. Doing only a half bale of pro mix, I did 2.5 gallons of water and I did half of a 30# bag of EWC plus a little extra for luck, so I'd say probably at least 18#. I basically did what the instructions called for divided by half because I'm doing half as much soil.

I have been concerned that the bin has too much airflow, so a week ago I sprayed another liter of water and mixed it in a bit to make sure the top layers were moist enough and I also installed some weather stripping to help reduce the air exchange. It's not air tight, but hopefully I've reduced the air flow a bit. The way this bin is designed, the lid doesn't snap on like tupperware, it just kind of notches in place and there are four clips that snap down to hold it in place.

This sounds like my set up exactly! I'll have to add more water to my cooking bin, as the biota doesn't appear to be where it should be by now (40+ days in).

It does mostly stay clumped together if I squeeze it, though the clump crumbles apart easily. And it left a light coating of fine grit on my hand afterwards.

Clearly, you did everything right - it's doin' that magic thang - no worries. :thumb:

Don't be concerned about airflow - airflow is a good thing - the soil needs to freely aerate. We don't want to encourage anaerobic microbes by sealing things up tight.

We didn't exactly get Doc's agreement on wetter/better, but we're all apparently doing it that way, so ...

airflow is important for sure.

This is what mine looks like. Day 5 after adding some leaves. Notice...not too much condensation on the lid.

Slab temp is 70. Air temp 70-100 for a day, averaging about 80.

just gave my plants their first cat drench and WOW. I watered them this morning and they were praying to the light then, came home few hours later and they are ultra-praying. my sour kosher is almost covering it's buds the leaves are so turned up to the light heh.

doesn't look unhappy or stressed, just like it's really trying to get every bit of light possible.

Hola Doc

I have two plants that have received back to back cat drenches. According to the directions, I should add recharge next time they get anything, correct?

I'm hoping Doc or someone will comment about the above quote. Note that MMM is following the directions (which Doc seems to confirm in his response) and is doing the recharge AFTER the Cat drenches. The directions I have, and every version I've seen says to do the recharge the third week of flower/pistil formation before the Cat drench(s).

From the ReCharge description: "It is designed to be top dressed during the 3rd week of the bloom (pistils developing) cycle." And, the following are a mixture of what Doc and some of the more experienced HB growers have said. I reworded and insert d in the directions so I wouldn't miss things. "ReCharge - Note:-Add the re-charge week 3 of bloom (bud set, numerous pistils) Just put it on top, work it into the soil and water it in." And, "Week 3: of flower set*; Spread ReCharge on top of soil, water in."

So, do I have this totally screwed up, or is The exact timing of the recharge really just a preference?

You're overthinking it. Re-charge 3rd week after the flip. Cat Drench is used when buds are set.

Doc-
When you prune like that, is it to improve yield, quality, or both?

Good shit, Doc. Really like to see how you do it at that point... Good shit bro thanks ;)

Oh, you doing 11/13 as an experiment or, is that a normal cycle for you?

It's my guess that it would be for quality, and not for yield. Some apple trees need to be pruned heavily or the fruit does not colour or develop taste properly. Nobody likes popcorn buds. They're as useful as trim and they take energy away from the buds.
