Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

NOT!:high-five:

Hey doc I did a water test on my well water all looked good.....iron copper.....it's is on the harder side and the alkalinity was between ideal and high. I was trying to match colors....

Question is was does alkalinity do to high brix soil? And follow up does an r/o system clear up alkalinity and what does the r/o system do to ph.....not that ph is a problem in hb.....thanks.

Good for you testing. Now you know what you're dealing with.

Total Alkalinity is a number that is derived by the ability of a solution to neutralize a strong acid. In other words, if your Total Alkalinity is really high, over time the pH of your soil will also increase because the high alkalinity of the water neutralizes a lot of acid and bicarbonates are formed in the soil.

Total Alkalinity over 200 is "hard" water, but it need not be a deal breaker for growing, it just has to be mitigated. TA is expressed as a percent of Calcium Carbonate, because that's what is mostly responsible for it, although other minerals can come into play at times.

If your number was about 100 or so, you've got GREAT water.

An RO system removes alkalinity and creates nearly pure water which is pH neutral....but has no buffering capacity. The pH of RO is meaningless, because it will take on the pH of the soil every single time, as it has no buffering ability of its own.

Also, it takes ALOT to change the pH of High Brix soil, so we pay absolutely no attention whatsoever to the pH of our water. I DO pay attention to nitrates and TA, however, and my water has been horrible on both counts in the warehouse, so I have an RO system.

I'd rather have your well water with no RO system.

I took some pics of plants suffering from low potassium issues:

Smartass. :laughtwo::green_heart:

Doc, anyone growing 12/12 or 11/13 from reg. seed, noticed also, they are getting a large, almost 100%, females? Is it from the soil, the reduced light schedule, LEDs, a combination?
Mine look like theyre mostly females to be..i only saw one male in last grow.

Good question, Ziggy. I don't have any data or rumors even to contribute regarding that.

But certainly a good environment favors females, as does nice bright light, minus the heat...so I think you're on the right track for sure.

I'm sorry, but there's nothing "standard" about your garden. :laughtwo::green_heart:

I love the shots w/o LEDs. It is so hard to get a good idea of their true character when everything is magenta.

Very interesting! Sounds like an experiment in the making.

my first "store seeds" grow. started 12/12
5 Nirvana NL regs. = 3 male, 1 hermie, 1 female.

a few grows later, 12/12
5 TGA Querkle regs = 5 male

several other grows 12/12 but with female seeds = not one male not one hermie, (knock on wood)

Im glad I stumbled into this, Punto Rojo is one those holy grail strain I've been wanting to see. Do you mind sharing the background of your seeds? like if there is a story behind or from a seed bank? Im really into Sativas and you seem to know a lot about these wild plants. I did some seed hunting myself and I have from Mexico and Jamaica, but never been lucky enough to travel to Colombia to pick up some seeds from one of the finest Sativa lineage in the the south this Punto Rojo.

Just another random question please anyone, I'm sure I've read it before.....

So I get the concept of using the products in the kit asap after mixing, but are there any guidelines to storage before hand? Will it be fine at 75-80f on a dark shelf in the grow area?

Mine have gone through a period of time in midsummer at those temps, and everything was fine, lasted a year or more ...

But I'm more comfortable about it in the low 70s or lower. Keep them well sealed, always shake well before using, don't cross contaminate, and it'll be ok.

GT, great advice..Definitely dont cross contaminate! :) rinse your measuring devices very well following dosage, keep lids on their respective jugs; dont cross dress :) . I dont store the extra foliars either- no fridge space ;). I make 2-4 oz in a 4 oz spray bottle using ratio 1 ml of foliar to 1 oz H2O.

So I used an ounce to 1 qt water. Seemed a Lil heavy very dark. Would cutting that in half defeat the purpose? I used all but maybe 1/8th of it. So sprayed the rest on my Korean dogwood tree it's having major issues anyhow.

So roughly 1 qt of DeStress took care of 12 1 gallon plants and 6 7 gallon plants.
