Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

On the topic of foliars, what is the general strategy with defoliating?

I don't "defoliate" I prune.

I don't prune to remove leaves in order to stress the plant out so it makes more bud sites. I tried that, taking all fan leaves except the very top one on each branch and I had an amazing number of bud sites and a great yield....but brix was way down with expected lower quality.

It turns out that Foliar Feeding require Foliage....who could have imagined such a thing? Plants actually use their leaves to photosynthesize too....so they aren't a bunch of warts that need to be removed.

So, I prune from the bottom up, leaving the top 3, 4 or 5 nodes on each branch, depending on the strain. I also top early in veg in order to have 3-6 main tops, each of which is pruned like I mentioned.

This way, the plant opens up and light can penetrate right down to the soil.

You'll have much better quality leaving the leaves on the plant and foliar feeding. Those leaves will be frosty and will make nice joints too!

Smoke report, Willie Nelson:

It's not dry, but I put a small bud on the AC yesterday and it was dry enough to smoke today. OMG. Better than before, fruity, smooth....much stronger. WOW! I'm going to go re-think my life....

Here's another update and a link to another journal I'm just starting today.

I'll be doing an entire tray, half Grape Ape, half Purple Cadillac. It's a 3x6 tray and it will be illuminated by 2 G8-600 LED's from Dorm Grow....a sponsor of this website and some very cool people as well.

Here's the link:
The G8-600 - Doc Bud Tries LED Again

BTW, the plants under HID are doing above average and my bloom room is nearly full again, as it should be.

Grape Ape week 8. (2 more weeks at least on these. We're starting to swell up finally. At last, some resin seems to be appearing.)

Here's a rootball of a Purple Caddy, at time of transplant. This is what we want to see...robust, slightly root bound....lots of pent up energy waiting to be released.

Doc....just a little resin eh! Quick Q. bro....what would the Brix be on a leaf like that multi coloured one there be ?Any idea?...just curious!:Namaste:

15-17 on the Brix. However, that's testing not just one leaf, but a fan, the petiole and the associated top. That's what the readings were when I cleaned her up about 3 weeks ago and the plant hasn't missed a beat. It should go quite purple in the next week.

Truly beautiful plants doc! Just ordered a refractometer it will be interesting to see what's going on in my garden. Loving your pruning techniques will definitely be incorporating them to a greater degree here on out. Been having issues mainlining/fluxing my plants in veg. It takes quite a while and my last round ran out of juice before they could get in bigger pots. Top dressed with some EWC and rescue soil with a little extra Roots and it helped a bit. They were practically flowering in the veg tent. I was running GLR in there but that's no more; some plants when root bound and under GLR will start flowering. Back on 18/6. I've been vegging in plastic nursery pots but I think im going back to some kind of root maker air pruning pot as final veg pot. Not so stoked on a couple plants about to get flowered out. Its ok though, learning process..hard to learn when everything goes right! Easy when you fuck up.

I know exactly what you mean. I was so STOKED to get mites on my first grow ever. I learned....

Most people would give almost anything to have plants as nice as yours....and yet you still see a steep learning curve, as do I. That's a very good sign, brother....you're going to grow and evolve both as a grower and as a person....you have the right attitude.

Excellence opens doors....

Has anyone ever tried a regrow ?
Like as in leave some buds/leaves on the plant, go to running the lights 24/7 ?
If so what would you do with a watering adjunct mix ?

Have a good 1, Bulldog
