re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Greetings to all my brothers an sisters.
The Ethiopian Highland Pure landrace ! was first grown in the highlands of Tanzania, where in my opinion the strain had different characteristics from what it is today. The strain was brought to Ethiopia in the time of the emperor Haile Selassie I's rule and was cultivated and inbred in and around the city of Shashemene by the Rastafari. The plant starts life with characteristics of indica genetics with large leaves and gradually starts to transform into the sativa traits, finishing with spear shaped buds which range from different colours from light greens, dark green with redish orange tints.
There are two distinct phenotypes in this strain, one growing tall with far in between nodes an producing slim buds. The other grows short with indica traits, usually produces more weight on the buds and end result is a much better smoke. Rastafari brothers who bring the herb an seeds across the border. This sativa landrace can be considered one of the shorter variety from the other taller growing African sativas. The loss of height could be due to the highlands of Ethiopia and cold climates forcing the plants to take on indica traits.

Now the Mission is to find the seed !
Have a good 1, B.D.

All praise to His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I.

For the record, I do not recommend anyone purchase seeds from overseas unless there is no other recourse.

I've found that if you get your passion and purpose behind growing in order.....seeds will come to you. No bull. Passionate growers sooner or later run into others who feel the same way.

I won't sell seeds to anyone.

Its not that easy doc. Especially when youre not in a legal state by any means. I wish i knew someone else with a passion like mine towards our favorite plant! I have friends that are in legal states and i still have to order online for decent genetics. Itll get better tho...give it a year or two :)

That's the dilemma I see, too - genetics. I want specific genetics, and am not particularly interested in someone else's cross, even if it bred true, which is doubtful. Swapping clones would be the most attractive, but that's a little tougher logistically. :cheesygrinsmiley: I want those fabulous phenos each of us uncovers.

Just think of what could happen for genetics if we could eliminate the dud phenos, and discover and swap the good ones at a highly accelerated rate!

Picture update:

Champagne in early bloom. Purple Cadillac (Urkle x Blackberry) Low Brix OG. Mites on the OG. I'll start harvesting next week. I need a couple runs in high brix soil for both trays to deal with the mites. It's so weird, the Champagne and P.Cad are right next to the OG's. One have mites, the others don't.

All because I added Organic steamed bone meal to the mix to try to dumb down the soil. On the bright side, the buds are untouched and the smell and bud structure is Grade A. I'll be happy with this harvest, but I think the guano might be a better additive than the bone meal. I'll try a mixture and see next time. Bud structure is better with the bone meal, but the brix was lower.

The sprays, amendments and drenches in the kit probably won't work too well with another soil. I'd transplant them into high brix soil and let everything work together. At that age the stems should be surprisingly stiff and strong. It looks like you might be over watering a bit, and possibly your soil holds too much moisture so you could very well have underdeveloped roots, which might cause the flimsiness.

Just get it into the real stuff and it should get better.

Doc, I did what you suggested and transplanted into HB soil following the instructions for root zone, transplant, etc. The first 24 hours it looked pretty bad. It perked up a bit the following day and I sprayed with de-stress. but then began to wilt and show yellow on the leaves. After a couple of days the soil seemed dry so I watered it well yesterday early am. The soil is spongy, but not damp/wet. This is what it looks like today. Think it's salvageable?

canuck, thanks for the words of encouragement. I forgot to tell Doc that I DID spray with de-stress (I edited the original reply), that's when it seemed to go downhill... Certainly, transplanting shocks the system, I just didn't expect the severity of it.

In veg you gotta let her dry out almost to the point of wilting and then water. She looks a lil rough but once those roots take hold she spring right back :)

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Is that a 5 gallon bucket it's in? My suspicion is that you've been drowning it. That plant in a 5 gallon bucket should go a week or more before it dries out. You watered it again 2 days later?

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

in the beginning before roots are much established i was going almost 10 days between watering...now in flower the roots have filled the pots and im watering every 5-7 days more so every 5....just fyi and my .02$

Let it dry out. Your roots are severely underdeveloped and the extra water probably damaged them even more.

Please read the "In the Lab" thread from the beginning and you'll see examples of the techniques used in various stages of growth, etc.

No more spraying, let it go a LONG time before you water again. It will probably bounce back, but definitely damaged the roots.

7 Gal. I've had a "habit" of overwatering - that's what got me into trouble to begin with :-(, but I was trying to be careful with this transplant. The soil was moist when I transplanted so I didn't soak it as one might. Yesterday I did soak it good with a ½ gal. Just now, I stuck my finger deep into the soil and it came out with just a little soil attached. Meaning, it doesn't appear to be 'overwatered'.
