Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

I'm thinking sunshine #4 advanced is the only one sold in 3.8 cu ft bales, but don't quote me on that.

Yea for the sunshine they switched most of them a few years back to the 3 cubic ft bales so i hope tht works or wen i get to the store they got one tht will work lol

Not sure if it’s exactly right but this is the Sunshine 4 I used:

My plants are looking good so far.

:hmmmm: I saw it recently... the 3.8 cu ft bales... when I was seeing if I could get it here. They still have it I’m pretty sure.

So generally speaking it sounds like Doc’s issue with the coco is that it’s CEC (cation exchange capacity) is shite, and because of that the calcium balance gets all messed up. (If you search in this thread for the word ‘coco’ posted by Doc, then you find everything he’s posted here about it ;) - it’s really quick)

Ok thanx for the pic tht helps me out lol. They jus have so many different names out there i dnt wana get sucked into buying sumthn i didnt need or get the wrong one cuz every time i try an find a new store to source stuff they always say oh get this this AND this lol. Then find out it was either the wrong stuff or i got double of stuff jus different lables/names lol. Like for nutes advanced nutes can work great if ur wanting all tht stuff in ur buds. But alot of it is mostly the same stuff n jus like one or two different things in the ingredients then slap a new/different lable on it n say its different from eachother lol.

The coco thing is interesting.

My lab says "no, don't use it." But I know some truly gifted growers who use 25% washed coco mixed into the Promix!

So, I'm studying it. I have some theories, but nothing to back them up just yet.

Ok that’s interesting! Thanks Doc - glad you’re investigating it a bit. A mad scientists work is never complete :)
Sounds like killer’s mix will be sweet!

Blazin’, are you outside USA? I couldn’t get either promix or sunshine here. I got a 3.8 cu ft of pure sphagnum pest moss (compressed like the promix) and replaced 1/4 of it with perlite, added limestone powder (like half a cup for the whole thing as per Doc’s recommendation at the time) and mixed with that. It’s working. (It took a while to sort it out though trying to source stuff! So maybe this will save you some time chasing things).

I'm not telling anyone to get the one with coco in it but I can tell you I've been running 1/3 coco mixed with Pro Mix for over 2 years now. Doc has tried about 8 different strains I've grown with coco in the mix and let's just say he's intrigued to the point he was going to test it and try to perfect it. I've done clones in the same tent and same feeding schedule and then tested the buds. The coco mix has won every time. Potency is about the same but the terps have been as high as 2 times the straight promix. I never really mentioned it because I didn't want Doc to have to troubleshoot those issues but he gave me the green light while we were in Jamaica to let the cat out of the bag so to speak. I wouldn't recommend a new brixer doing it but it can and has been done by a few with excellent results.

Well, just got my Meizhi 600w in the mail and boy she's bright! Getting super excited. Waiting on my mixed seeds to show (ordered from peak seeds bc, some nice looking stuff there and very reasonable! check em out) then I'll get the invoice for the kit (might even get the bulk if I can get friends to chip in) and a thermo/humidity monitor, maybe a cpl extra fans. Not worrying about carbon filtering the smell because we legal in 12 days boys, awww yeah! The streets will reek far and wide, I'm calling it now.

Next steps will be staging a small room here w/ either mylar wrap if it's affordable or white panda film and fixing any light leaks at the doorway. Figuring out something for water since I can't afford reverse osmosis. Several years ago our tap water would have been perfect - we had literally the 6th best tap water in the world, and best in Canada for purity/taste. It was not chlorinated or fluoridated. There were a few cases of e. coli or salmonella or something (probably not even connected to our water supply) and they chlorinated it since. Fuckers. Distilled water seems super super expensive and inefficient so I may end up going reverse osmosis eventually.

After that, I guess it's picking up the first bale of pro-mix and castings and beginning the high brix journey! I have no idea what the strains will be to start since you got double the seeds in the mystery sack, perhaps to my disadvantage as a complete noob. We'll see how it goes, I'll post pics soon as I get the room set up! Thanks for the advice so far, will set up a journal soon.

I have peakseeds NL, Skunk, blueberry, and c99.
If you start a journal let me know. I would like to see your results.

Thanks

Ye for sure. It's looking like we might start in Jan, I'd like to start in Nov but might not work out. By the way what are those LED bars in your journal? Look great.. you use them for all of flower? ....found it, spydrx. Looks awesome. Man, these are all out of my price range but hopefully not for too long. I'm lacking in the light dept for now, it will be passable but not max potential until I get funds together for high quality LEDs

I have no idea what I'll get in the mixed bag. One quick question, I'm getting 20 random regular seeds. I want to do 4 flower, 4 veg, so I have to get 1/2 way through the growth of the first 4 and then start 4 more yeah? So should I germ 10 seeds each time and hope all the females aren't in the 2nd lot? Lol. I'm also guessing diff strains will veg longer than others so timing may be an issue. We'll see.

I would love to pair a male + female for seed as well but seems like for that you're better off knowing your strains..

Very interesting. My past research on coco coir, revealed to me that it is not very good at retaining calcium, which is why I figured it is not recommended for our high brix soil. But maybe that’s when it’s used 100%, and not mixed in with our soil. Our soil may buffer that shortcoming. It is superior in phosphorus retention and provides a super oxygen rich root zone, which may be beneficial to us since our system relies heavily on good hookup and communication with the root zone.

I am very interested to hear more! Like Doc always says, “the best cannabis is yet to be grown”.

I just thought I'd share a pic of one of the Tut plants I just flipped to 12/12 yesterday with my fellow Brixers, and I have to admit, I've never seen plants looking this happy! :thumb:

Checkout this beast:

I'm not sure who's lovin' the HB soil more - me or her?

As far as not retaining calcium I have not seen any issues. Even 3rd run soil has fiber glass stems and solid cores. I'd say it isn't an issue.
Can i do the Cat drench and recharge at the same time?
Yes I do it all the time.
