DobeWan's First Grow! LA Confidential & 24K Gold - LED - 3x3 - Coco

We're really close on a lot of the experience right now then based on everything you're describing.

It's funny that you talked about leaf salad from your trimmings in your previous post. I couldn't help but think, looking at the 24Ks when I opened the tent (I'm at 47V), that the training has them looking like big bowls of salad!

I did my more aggressive training and trimming over the course of a couple of weeks from about 30V, with the most defoliation in the late 30s. There are a few ties here and there, mostly because LA2 is a bit of botched training job I'm salvaging, but the 24Ks are only getting tied to get the canopy even at this point and LA1 is getting no training at all. I'm pretty happy with the results of my 24K training - I think I've given myself a good basis to keep an even canopy filled with top growth. My LA training didn't work out as I'd planned but I learned a lot about how to get it right next time.

I'm really interested to see how yours respond to the SCROG - both are strains I could see myself growing. It might take a while for me to get to Purple Kush but it's such an important strain in my appreciation of cannabis that I'm sure I'll grow it eventually!

I'll take a few pics later, after the ladies have had a chance to perk up after lights on!

Dobe, I thank you for allowing me to post and compare my results with yours, its your journal and I kind of feel weird doing so...but it is also kind of neat comparing similar practices, and coco growing verses hydro, plus maybe educating you, me, and anyone else that is following along. I credit your training method posts to giving me confidence on my training, and your consistent clear picture and note updates on your progress, its is fun to follow and compare the trials and errors on both sides (which seems to be very few so far)!

Scrog or no scrog, it looks like you will have a great harvest in 8-10 weeks, and what I have learned from you and you from me, our next grows should be killer!

Thanks again and looking forward to the updates:thanks:

Here we go with 47V!

LA1's light burn hasn't progressed since I adjusted the lamp. She's producing 11 point leaves now, although there's a funky 12th leaf sticking out of the leaf on top! She's also really tall now, and I'm probably going to have to bank on her not stretching as much as the 24Ks in flower.

LA2 has certainly gotten bushy in the last couple of days - you could almost mistake her for one of the 24Ks now if you didn't know better. I should have gotten a pic of the stalk - it didn't turn out like I'd hoped but I think I'm still in a position to salvage some good results all the same. It won't produce like my 24Ks but I knew that going in.

I'm really thrilled with the progress of the 24Ks in the last few days. The growth looks beautiful and the canopy is coming in very nicely. I cannot wait to flip these ladies and see what happens.

24K1 is the "ruffles" plant. Hard to believe seeing how far she's come. You can see see it on some older leaves but overall, I'm absolutely thrilled with how she's looking.

24K2 was the plant whose branch I broke not long after topping. Now, she's the plant that looks happiest and likely to yield the most. Crazy how it works. When I checked out the shots of her I thought, wow, this looks like something I'd see in someone else's grow journal! Really excited about her progress and potential.

Thanks for this! I'm really glad you were able to take something away from what I was doing as far as training. I learned so much myself! I feel like I'm going to do it way better next time. I have been nervous about things all the way along - but it's amazing how quickly that changes with time and experience. This is a hobby that really pays you back what you put in. I have no doubt that what I document here is going to be referenced down the road, if only by me on my next grow! If anyone else gets a benefit from it, now or later, that's gravy. I'm sure you'll find it the same way - the more you write down, the more you'll have to go back to. So, by all means, I'm grateful for your posts in my thread and happy to have them!

I'm pretty pumped heading into flower - I agree, we're set up well to get something nice from these harvests. I get more excited each time I open the tent! Can't wait to compare bud pics and vape reports! :thumb:

Your gals in veg are really full and lush. I can't wait to see what happens in flower! Your training certainly seems to have paid off in potential bud sites. :thumb:

OTM, your scrog setup looks amazing!

Thanks Lady Antheia!

I decided LA2 needed one last round of training and defoliation before it would be ready for flower. There was still too much top growth clustered in one area. Given that I expect this defoliation to slow growth temporarily, I decided to do some further defoliation on the 24Ks - more on 24K1, less on 24K2.

I moved the light again as well given LA1's height, which triggered the realization that I need to flip soon, as my space is running out to keep the plants optimal distance from the lamp. I put LA2 onto a platform to keep it the optimal 24". The 24Ks are about 28" from the lamp as a result.

My plan is that once LA2 fills back in a bit, I'll flip. I'm thinking I'm days away.

Took a peek after waking up. LA2 is bouncing back fast. Looks like I'll be flipping very soon.

Now the question becomes - do I bite the bullet on more gear to become perpetual? Because the clock is ticking on taking clones. I expect I'll be taking a trip to the hydro shop this weekend to try to figure it out. Maybe a small $200 mini veg tent setup with T5 lighting to tide me over for a while? I'd love to get a 4x4 but it's a tight squeeze and would require me to reconfigure the room a bit which is not a quick and easy job. I could fit another 3x3 without upsetting things, but I feel like I'm going to find the 3x3 too small once I grow more and more, and when I'm growing for my wife. Then again, I'm sure when the time comes that I'd want to upgrade, the secondary market in Canada will be flourishing and I'll likely be able to easily sell well cared for gear second hand.

Decisions, decisions!

Yes! Said the bad influence. :battingeyelashes:

I splurged on an ez clone, small 2ft t5, timer, and a free chlorine meter. It's currently in a small closet and working well. There are root nubs on all 3 clones. Unfortunately, I lost one of the Northern Lights to a mishap with a broken stem. It was my fault, but I have the other NL already with roots out.

I'd go 3x3 or 2x2 for veg, 4x4 for flower. I used 4x4 closet for veg, and 4x4 tent to flower. But I found that sometimes you can flower both. :)

Cheers

Thanks for the input! I think the ideal solution is a 4x4 to become my new flower tent, but the investment and the work it forces me to do in my basement is less than ideal right now. So I've all but decided to get the small tent and T5s, and then when I'm in a better position I can get the 4x4, and worst case my $200 investment is less useful. Then again, who's to say I won't continue to have a use for the small tent as well when I get the 4x4? Options are a good thing!

I'm hoping to get and post some pics tonight if it's not too late. I ate some decarbed indica earlier and my stomach feels pretty decent, better than it has all week. So I'm thinking a sativa might be in order when the kids get to bed. Thinking I'll try the last Chocolate Fondue phenotype I haven't tried!

Back later!

50V - just about ready to flip.

That's awesome jdub! I'm still very much a novice but I'll help wherever I can. First thing I would tell you is that I found one phenotype a little more finicky than the other - my two get different nute amounts. I would also highly recommend you top and train - my ladies responded really well to it.

I'm going to clone my 24K2 in the next few days so my 2nd round with it and your first will probably end up timed pretty closely. Feel free to pop by here to talk about it any time.

I posted this over in the big Stinky Snid q&a thread and thought I'd post it here too.

Cloning questions.

First, does anyone have a preferred guide to cloning? I have the Cervantes grow bible and there's a lot of conflicting information out there.

Second, I want to aim to have seeds and clones close in veg. Ideally I'll take 2 clones and both will root, and germ 2 seeds and both will pop. How can I time it to get them as close as possible in veg? Maybe start the seeds now and wait a week or two to take clones? I want to flip to flower ASAP and will likely have up to 12 weeks of flowering - my 24K Gold says 10 weeks on the package. So plenty of time in veg before space opens up in the tent. Cervantes says take clones 2 weeks into flower - between rooting and revegging that would allow seeds plenty of time to catch up.

Interesting that you ask this today. I was just going through my journal trying to figure out the growth rate from seed for the same reasons. Based on my pics, I'm going to say at least two weeks for a seed to catch up to a clone.

I figure I've learned a few tricks to stunt a plant's growth if needed! :laughtwo:

Just threw 1 Chocolope (DNA) fem and 1 Kushy Kush (Canuk) fem seed into paper towels. The Kushy Kush was a freebie and reviews were promising enough to make it worth trying. Chocolope, on the other hand, was targeted for a while as my first sativa!

Tentative plan is to clone 24K2 and LA2 and to grow 4 distinct strains in grow 2 - Chocolope sativa, 24K Gold hybrid, LA Confidential indica and Kushy Kush indica.

I'm eyeing strains for my next grow too - Violator Kush, Kosher Kush, Green Crack and Candida are early favourites.
